Title: OWmeet Thread - An Annual Production by the OW Monkeys
Post by: idolminds on Monday, January 12, 2009, 12:00:32 PM
I figured we could pop this up here so we can plan the next one and people can make arrangements ahead of time.

So, I know the original plan was to have it at my place but that doesn't seem very possible now. We were going to add onto the house (or get a separate trailer house) that would help with housing people, but that didn't pan out yet. Plus travel stuff has made travel a little trickier for people.

So is everyone cool with Cali again? I might fly this year, but I'm undecided.

EDIT by Que - So people don't have to try to track down the post I put them in, I'm hijacking this opening post now.  I finally got the pictures uploaded from last year's (2008's) OWmeet.  I know, I'm a year late.  Leave me alone.  You can now view them here (http://picasaweb.google.com/quemaqua/OWmeet2008?authkey=Gv1sRgCPq0s-q8v9_yKQ#)!

I also uploaded an extended gallery from what's been seen previously for OWmeet 2007, and you can check those out here (http://picasaweb.google.com/quemaqua/OWmeet2007?authkey=Gv1sRgCKi0n-mtzerljQE#).  They're good times, and certainly worth reliving so as to ease the depression of having OWmeet 2009 over and done.

EDIT x2 by Que - And now we have "edit" albums which remove the few vaguely offensive pictures and any swearing in the comments.  Just in case you want to show the pictures to an easily offended family member of a prior generation or some such.

OWmeet 2007 Edit (http://picasaweb.google.com/quemaqua/OWmeet2007Edit?authkey=Gv1sRgCIH7pIjJmfjbJA) -- OWmeet 2008 Edit (http://picasaweb.google.com/quemaqua/OWmeet2008Edit?authkey=Gv1sRgCKe8gKj1xKTQQA)

EDIT x3 by Que - OWmeet '09 pics are finally up (http://picasaweb.google.com/quemaqua/OWmeet2009?authkey=Gv1sRgCPm8mPCJ2I2QQQ#).  I could make excuses, but it really just took so long because I'm a dipshit.  No "edit" version for them yet.  I can make one if there's demand.

I'd be happy with CA again since my studentness makes traveling near impossible. Give me a couple days and I'll be able to let you all know when Spring Break is this year.

As I'm sure you can imagine, it's cool with me!  I don't have the money to go anywhere even if I wanted to, at this point, so... yeah.  I can't be 100% sure about housing people, either, since I'm not 100% sure about housing myself.  I'm hopeful that will all get worked out before plans solidify, though.

Damn it, and that reminds me of how much I need to post the meet pictures from freaking 2008.  Arg.

Per usual, I won't be attending.  I'm going on a cruise in April.  As you can imagine, I won't have spare money to buy a plane ticket to CA.

Fuck yes, I'll be there!  I just got my 2 weeks of vacation time renewed at the beginning of this month and money shouldn't be an issue, so barring anything crazy going down here, I'm down for another meet in Cali.

So, my holiday goes from March 23 to the 27th, with the weekends bookending (although I might want to travel one of the weekends down to So Cal to visit my family).

I'll need to get some Orks painted before then so we can have a three way fight. I should enlist Que.

Anyone live in Denver? Seems all the flights between me and CA stop over in Denver. One flight has a 4 hour layover, we could have a mini-meet...heh.

I should have plenty of time, so once we get things firmed up I'll put in a request.  Looks like it'll be around my birthday again.  Maybe you guys can buy me the Doom boardgame expansion so we can all hate ourselves EVEN MORE!

... but seriously, you guys know I'm going to make us play again, right?  (maybe with those easing-the-difficulty-card adjustments we found online...)

Also, Dungeoneer will be played. Hopefully lots (if its good).

So the first possible date you would want anyone to come would be the 23rd, or would it be the weekend before on the 21st or 22nd?  Either way is fine with me, I'll check the vacation calendar at work and see if time is available to request off for that week and let you guys know tomorrow probably.  I won't request it off until things are concrete, but the earlier we get this set, the better so the vacation time doesn't get filled up for those days.

Oh, both weekends before are totally fine. I'm just still rolling around the idea of going down to visit if I get the time. It seems like some years include them while others don't, so I'm just considering what to do if people haven't shown up during the first weekend or if they've all left by the last weekend.

I just checked the time off calendar and as of right now there are plenty of hours in the pool for that week, but there is one request put in for a couple of days out of that week, so the sooner I can request it off the better to guarantee me getting it.  If I came it could be from March 22nd(Sunday)-March 27th since Saturday the 21st is filled up for requests.  If you decided not to go out of town I could even stay on the 28th and 29th as well since those days aren't filled up in the request pool.  I can always go ahead and request off the time now and cancel the days that I don't use if something comes up, if that sounds good to everyone.

Also, I'll be sure to bring Munchkin this year.

Well, I don't know exactly what's going on.  It looks like our moving plans have officially fallen through and we're officially stuck back here in shitty apartment land.  I don't guess that's going to change, so that's... uh, whatever that is.  I guess it means we can reliably house somebody.  As for time off... I'll check tomorrow and take whatever I can get, which I'm 99% sure will be the entire week.

I have officially requested off the time that I need and its been approved.  If something comes up that prevents me from going I will let you guys know ASAP.  I might be moving in early March, but it shouldn't cause any problems for me going out there.

I'm checking tickets still. Looks like the train is the way to go again. Would arriving the evening of the 20th (Friday) be too early? I'm juggling dates here because the ticket prices vary by a lot. If I leave the 18th or 20th, (arrivals being evening 20th or 22nd) its only $116. But the 19th is $185.
Title: Re: OWmeet 09 Thread of Planningness

Depends on what time you'd arrive in the evening Friday, for me.  I dunno' about Sy.  But as long as it's after like... 4:45 in the evening, I should be able to do it.  Emeryville is actually on my way back home, so I'm usually around there at about a quarter to 5.  In fact, if you got there a little earlier and wanted to wait I could do it that way too... but that's the earliest I can be at the station.  Any time after that, of course, is fine... like if it's late evening or whatever.  Or 3 in the morning if they stall your train.

Yeah. Fridays are generally going to be unscheduled days for me, so that means I'm open barring giant things which I assume won't exist then because that'll be the day before Spring Break. If anything, things will be due that day and I'll be busy on Thursday. So yeah, I can grab you that Friday as well.

Someone should sticky this thread.

Just an update and some questions, I'll probably be buying my ticket sometime this month shortly after the 13th.  We are getting new schedules at work on that day, which shouldn't affect things, but I'll have to change and swap some of those vacation days depending on what I get, which is hopefully my awesome old schedule I had when I came out there last year.  Also, Sy have you decided on that last weekend of the 28th and 29th on whether or not you'll be going out of town?  I mainly ask because of housing and what day/time I need to make my depature ticket for.  I'm also wondering how housing is going to work out this year.  Is it going to be like last year where I stay with Sy and Idol stays with Que, or something different?

Oh dear.. my aunt's been bugging me to come visit her in CA.. My brother in law is there too.. but I don't think I'll make it in March or April..  There's a chance I'll be coming end of February though but i'd stay a few days only because of work and have to prepare to move *groans*.

That's too early to meet you guys :(

Hey I don't know who this might affect, but GDC in SF is on the same week as OWMeet. So if anyone is getting a hotel room you might want to think about reserving it early.

We should all volunteer (http://www.gdconf.com/volunteers/index.html) and totally crash GDC.

Post by: Quemaqua on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, 07:32:47 AM
Hotel rooms shouldn't be a big deal.  We're not really close enough to SF for it to matter much.  That'd be awesome to go, though.  We should start a "development team" and go.

Megan and I booked our plane tickets. Flying into Oakland on March 21st (Saturday) and we'll be heading back on the next Saturday, March 28th. The flight into Oakland doesnt leave until the afternoon and gets in at about 9:20pm PST, its later than Id like but its the cheapest one that's a straight shot all the way there.

Who are you flying with?  I've looked all over and I can't find jack shit for one way flights, the only one I can find is like 5 in the fucking morning and that shit isn't going to work.  To be fair I've only looked once on a few sites though.  Either way, I'm probably going to be coming in on the 22nd and leaving the 28th, unless its easier for me to leave the 29th so Sy and Que aren't having to haul you two, Idol, and me around airports/train stations on the same day.  I wouldn't mind staying the extra day either unless you guys need me gone by the 28th.

If it's going to make traveling easier for you (and prevent us from waking up super early to get you to the airport a five), we can accommodate.

No, that time was the time for me departing from Austin, I can't remember the time I get to Oakland on that one, but I'm not going to do it, since I would probably get little to no sleep.  There were several decent flights that made only one stop like I did last year and they have more afternoon times, I'll do that if it comes to it since it will save me money too.  All I need to know is what day you guys would want me to leave and I'll buy the ticket accordingly.

We went through Southwest. Its pretty simple if you go right to their homepage. Though Id recommend you book the flight soon, flights are cheaper the longer in advance you book them.

So I guess I missed the last meetup, but I might consider this one, seeing as how I actually live in San Francisco :-[ Depending on what my schedule is like next month. I don't think I'd be able to accommodate housing (I live in a room in my parents house, being jobless after graduating sucks) but I'm obsessed with San Francisco (anyone remember my Full House photographs post on the Vestibule?) and can show people around here. It would be kinda awkward since I haven't posted here in forever and thus don't really remember anyone or people's personalities or what not, but I think I'd still be down.

I'll prolly come on my own though.

So we have some ideas for "events" while everybody's here, and I'd like to get some feedback from you guys.

Firstly, one that Pyro suggested: Lucky JuJu Pinball (http://www.ujuju.com/).  Basically a vintage pinball museum.  Ten bucks entry and I think you can just hang out and play any of the 40 machines for however long you want.  I'm pretty sure he sets them to free play, but I'm not 100% positive.  Either way, good times.

Secondly, one I thought of: Cartoon Art Museum (http://www.cartoonart.org/), in San Francisco.  They're going to have 2 exhibits there during the meet, one consisting of Watchmen-related material, and the other for Stan Sakai art.  You can read about them on the page there.

Lastly, one Belmont asked about that I thought of: the de Young Museum (http://www.famsf.org/deyoung/visiting/index.asp).  There are a few exhibits going on right now, which you can check out here (http://www.famsf.org/deyoung/exhibitions/index.asp).  This is more fine art type stuff, which I know Dustin and I enjoy, but not sure on everybody else.

We're also going to probably have a night where we watch American Splendor since Belmont and idol haven't seen it, and then during the meet Venture Bros. Season 3 hits DVD, so I figure we totally have to devote a night to sitting at Sy's eating pizza from Zachary's while watching (after making the requisite trip to Best Buy, of course).

So... thoughts?

If you're up for more classical art, the Legion of Honor is a great alternative to the de Young. If you're feeling very adventurous, I think they have discount tickets that work for both and a bus line that runs between the two.

Also, as of sometime last week I have no neighbors below me. I'm guessing/hopping it'll stay that way until at least the end of next week since they're still doing a little work. This could be good for us.

So I have a few interviews for jobs throughout the week but otherwise I think I'll show up for a day or two :) Now some suggestions:

1) Anything in Golden Gate Park is good. De Young and the Botanical Gardens are definitely worthwhile trips. If you do go to Golden Gate Park, make sure to go to the intersection of Haight and Stanyan Streets!! If you go west into the park, you'll find yourself in a place called Hippy Hill, the remnants of the 60s movement. This is one of the few places in the country where people will openly offer to sell you weed, shrooms, and various other drugs and hallucinogens. Don't make eye contact with the dealers (they usually have backpacks on) if you don't want drugs. If you head east down Haight, you'll see a lot of cool small shops...

2) The Legion of Honor and surrounding areas are pretty cool. In addition of checking out the Legion, be sure to take the path along the coast edge of Lincoln Park. Incredible views of Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin headlands. Also not too far away from the Cliff House.

3) Another place which might be fun for nerds (lol) is Musee Mechanique (http://www.museemechanique.org/) . This museum, previously located at the Cliff House, is now at Fisherman's Wharf, the epicenter of San Francisco Tourism. So in addition to being able to check out Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, and Aquatic Park, you could also see this museum. It has a bunch of quarter-operated old school arcade games (like super old school mechanical ones), and is a lot of fun. Free admission too.

San Francisco itself is only about 7 miles by 7 miles but it's packed with stuff inside. Let me know if you guys want any more suggestions...

Title: Re: OWmeet 09 Thread of Planningness
Post by: Quemaqua on Monday, March 16, 2009, 08:12:31 PM
Gah, no more.  I actually hate San Francisco and spend as little time there as possible, outside of occasionally venturing in for stuff like museums and such.

As for the events... it's going to be a bit weird working out the logistics.  We don't actually plan stuff, and I have no idea if and when we'll actually do any of this.  They're ideas, but it may well be that we don't do any of it at all, or come up with something else at the last minute and end up in Mexico or something.  So I can't guarantee much.

Ok, firestorm, I'm just going to lay this out here. We're all equally stumped by this, and not sure of a diplomatic way of handling it. So I'm just going to post, and hope you don't take it the wrong way.

You seem cool enough, you've posted in the past and felt like a good match for the personalities on the board. But its been a while since you've been a "regular", and its hard to remember personalities like that.

Its not like we don't want you there, we just don't know enough about you to make that decision. We don't know how well you'll mesh with the group, and don't want to have hurt feelings if we don't meet up or don't ask you to join us for stuff later or what have you.

I suck at writing this kind of thing. I guess the basic idea is: we don't know. We don't know what we're doing or when, we don't know you very well or how you'd fit in with the rest of us, and we don't know how to tell you this in a way that doesn't sound mean. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. It'd be cool to have more people at the meet and all, as long as it "works", you know? We just don't know how well it would work right now.

I see, and don't worry, it's cool. My post was just general suggestions, not forcing you guys to do a plan or anything, and sorry if it made it seem like I was inviting myself, it was meant to be more like if you guys are in the area you could give me a holler. But I won't be offended either way, and I do understand that like half of my posts on this forum are on this thread, haha.

Festivities have officially begun.  They consisted of lots of the usual BS, with the absolute trip-making highlight: using a magical talking serving machine with a touchscreen to order our food at Jack in the Box.

We are in the future.  No, seriously.  THE FUTURE.

So Megan and I arrived, they all showed me the magical taco machine as we picked up and gorged on bacons and meats from Jack in the Box. Sorry Belmont if we are late to pick you up or don't show up at all, we all probably died from massive heart failure.

Also Noby Noby Boy is now my pick for game of the year if it's to be classified as a game.

I am back home again. The week went by in a flash. It feels extremely depressing being surrounded by people that your really comfortable with then you leave and its back to the grind. Vacations are never this good.

I'll have to borrow Megan's camera and get her pictures on photobucket, which will probably happen on Tuesday when Im off.

Final photo exchange should happen today here too before Belmont is off.  We miss everyone already... the next week is going to suck.

EDIT - Well, everyone's gone.  And to commemorate a week of horrible eating habits, I polished off a gigantic plate of corned beef hash with poached eggs and a blueberry muffin.  I'm pretty sure I'm going to die.

Thanks for another great year, guys.  It was a blast.

I'm back. Woo.

That return trip was interesting. I had the seat all to myself until Denver when some dude sat next to me. Damn.

Then at 6am today I was woken up to some train security asking about my suitcase because it didnt have a tag on it. They ask me a million questions about who I am, what I do, where I went, what I did there, etc etc. They eventually call in my info to some place and search my bags, find out I have a perfectly clean record and nothing in my bags but dirty laundry, and they leave. What the fuck? That bag never had a tag, not last year or this year. The first year they even made me remove the tags I had on them, though those were checked bags. So I went 3 days out with no problem and two whole days back...and they pick 6am in Omaha to throw a hissy fit.

How stupid.  What the fuck are they all bugged out about anyway?  It's a train.  What, are you going to hijack it and drive it into a Burger King?

EDIT - So I finally got the pictures uploaded from last year's (2008's) OWmeet.

EDIT x2 - And now we have "edit" albums which remove the few vaguely offensive pictures and any swearing in the comments.  Just in case you want to show the pictures to an easily offended family member of a prior generation or some such.

Okay, so the pictures for this year still aren't up.  I was waiting on getting some of the remaining shots from people, but I think I'll just try to get what we've got up now and then add the remainder later.  Unless there are pitifully few, in which case I'll wait.  We didn't take nearly as many this year for some reason.  Not sure how many we'll end up having.

Well, there's a bump in the road already.  Sy is getting the 22nd through 26th of March off for spring break.  We didn't figure out the timing for this fast enough and one of my coworkers snapped up the 19th and 22nd for days off.  She isn't the super bitchy one, so I'll see if maybe I can bargain with her for that one day... but we'll have to see.  And I have to get this ball rolling on Monday, otherwise I run a real risk of the other chick trying for some time during that week.  It isn't just around Easter, so hopefully that means I'm safe, but I'm tossing in my leave request ASAP to be sure since only one person can be off at a time in my unit now that so many people have been fired or quit.

Fuck I hate my job.

Anyway... so yeah, that's sort of the plan for now.  Any thoughts?  It seems we're all down to do it here again this year, which is good because at our new place we can house a good number of folks for free, so nobody should be motel-bound anymore.  Between Sy's place and ours we should be able to accommodate 4, which should cover the usual suspects no problem.

I'm down again this year probably.  Let me know more details on when I should come out (like if I could come out a day or two before the 22nd) and I can request it off ASAP since my vacation renews on Jan 1st and the sooner I put in for it the better.

Just realized I didn't update the thread.  I couldn't get Monday the 22nd off, so I got the rest of that week through to the end of the month.  It looks like plans are forming for people to maybe get here the prior weekend, on the 20th or 21st, then Sy can entertain everyone for a day until I get off work (in theory I could use emergency personal leave, but I only get 15 hours a year).  I don't know how that'll work out since we haven't talked to Sy about it, but that seems to be the plan that's forming.  Looks like people will start leaving on the 27th-ish.

So Que suggested we start hammering out more exact dates for travel and who needs to be where when. Guess I'll start since the train is pretty regular.

Coming in is no real big deal. I originally planned to come in Sunday afternoon, but the ticket price went up $40. Strangely if I leave a day later the price is actually cheaper, only $116. So if I take that I'll show up on Monday at 3:30pm.

The return trip has me leave at 10:30am. Its nice that Que isn't very far from the station and its a whole hour later than the Emeryville departure time, but it makes it trickier getting me there and others to the airport if they have tickets near that time. So...I can't change that time, but I can change the day I leave since I'm probably the most flexible for it. Plus all the ticket prices for that weekend are the same. Since I'm going to cut off the beginning of the week a bit, I figured maybe I could stay Saturday and leave Sunday morning, if thats cool with Que.

So thats my plan at the moment. If there are no conflicts and stuff is groovy with everyone then hopefully I can get the tickets ordered while the one is so cheap.

EDIT

I guess more specific dates would be in order. I would arrive on the 22nd, and depart on the 28th.

So Aimee had a thought tonight. What would everyone think about seeing if we can get to Alcatraz one day? Apparently there's some sort of cool night tour that would be fun.

We were sort of thinking of shooting for the Thursday or Friday. If that sounds cool, we can start looking into getting reservations/planning the thing.

Someone (Que or Aimee, I can't remember now) mentioned that it might be sweet to hike or something one day as well. I think last year we considered Muir Woods. Maybe we can actually do that this year if people want to get out of the house.

Yeah, we should be able to put you up okay.  Conditions are going to be a bit cramped at my place, but I can house 3 if I need to.  Or maybe we can do 2 here, 2 at Sy's?  But it should work out, especially if you're only going to be here a couple nights... shouldn't be any big deal.

Only lame part about my place is I don't know that the landpeople™ will be cool with extra cars parked on the property, and there's nothing in the way of nearby street parking without a walk of a couple blocks.  I'll have to talk with them and see what will be okay and what won't, though I imagine we'll be spending more time at Sy's than anywhere else since he's got more comfortable seating arrangements and whatnot.

So an update and some bad news. I can't make it. I have no money.

In early December I was involved in a big car accident. It wasn't my fault but my car was pretty badly damaged. I took it to a mechanic who promised to have it fixed in 10 days.

However, I didn't know the guy was kinda shady and he kept giving me excuses and delaying. He pretty much had the car till early Febuary. I was super pissed. The thing was halfway into January I got a call from Enterprise telling me that my insurance only covered my rental car for a month. I called the mechanic and he promised me and Enterprise that he would cover the expenses.

After I got my car back, the mechanic then promised to settle all debts. However, I kept getting calls from Enterprise saying the guy was giving them bad checks and making excuses. It finally came to a point where Enterprise told me they'd have to charge my credit card because they weren't getting the money from the mechanic. This was 3 days ago. Soooo I was charged $550 to cover the month and a half over my insurance limit. Now I have to get the money back fromt he crooked mechanic and I'm probably gonna have to take it to small claims court as he is being very uncooperative.

TL;DR mai monez iz all gone

Sorry guys. next year.

Sorry guys. next year.

Shit man, that's terrible. I run across this kinda thing all the time in this POS country. Crooked bastards like these just get away with this kinda crap too often.

Apparently Oakland decided to have a marathon today and wouldn't allow me to drive out of my street to take people to their travel points, but Que came through and was able to pick us up a few blocks away. Now, we've put Idol on a train and left Pyro at the airport. It's all over and (hopefully) good times were had by all.

Oh yeah. (http://s94054002.onlinehome.us/random_funny/Pyrostheman.mp3)

Pics will be forthcoming!  Will be a bit yet, though, as I still have to get everyone else's pics from Sy.  Once that's accomplished, hopefully within a day or two, I'll start getting the album together.

It was a great time as always.  My life is a hell of a lot more complicated this year which made things a little iffy for me a couple times, but it was great to see everyone and the trip was very therapeutic for me.

Pics soon!

There's actually been some talk about that happening amongst a few of us already.  Pyro, care to open up the discussion?

And I know, the pics, I know... I can't do shit about them with my computer fucked.  But once I get the reformat figure out I'll get them up, swear to God.  And next year it won't be nearly so bad, barring any more personal tragedy.

Well with everybody having been moved around a little, some of us have mentioned we have the meet here in Texas. From there we can either crash down where Belmont is at or everyone could stay at the house I'll be moving into by December. But if everyone can manage to make it to Texas, we could have a pretty sizable meet. I know Belmont's friends have been wanting to go and it would be easier for them to make it, me and Que's friend Heather said she'd be interested in tagging along, and my brother could easily join in on some shenanigans. Hey Sy, if you can make it, would Aimee come with you?

But yea, either place we go to here theres plenty of stuff to do. Hell theres a six flags down the road from me.

I need to figure out if I'll be staying here in San Marcos another year or if I'll be moving to Austin next year and what my living arrangements will be like.  I know for sure if I stay here another year, I could easily house two or three people and my friend Corey could probably house one or two people as well so a hotel may not have to happen for anyone and even if it does there like 6 hotels within 5 minutes of me.  I'll give an update later this year or early next year when I know more.

Dunno where exactly pyro is, but it looks like the train would be a pretty easy ride to Texas. The stops in the area are: Cleburne, McGregor, Temple, Taylor, Austin, San Marcos. I know those last two would be easy to Belmont, but maybe one of the others are near pyro as well.

And its only a 28 hour ride. Get on in the afternoon, spend the night, get off the next evening. That would be amazing. Return trip is a morning depart, but whatever. Used to that now.

My ass is fully planted in chemistry land right now and I don't know which way is up. I've barely talked to anyone back home outside of my parents in the past couple of weeks and I barely know what I'm doing in two weeks, so it's hard for me to make any promises next year.

Good news is that I'm pretty sure that I'll be in San Francisco mid-December for a conference for a week. At least we'll be able to visit then.

So Monday, March 28th through Monday April 4th are all available to request off in my system here at work but there are a couple of those days there are only a few open request spots left so I should get this put in ASAP.  Would requesting off those specific dates work or did everyone have some other dates in mind?

EDIT:  After talking to Idol briefly, I went ahead and put the requests in and I officially have off March 28th through April 7th.  I requested an extra day off after the 4th to leave some buffer room and to give myself a couple of days before I have to go back to work since my days off that week are on the 6th and 7th.  If any changes on the days come up let me know so I can make the change on my request ASAP.

He wants to go but he has to find out if he can get the days off.  His managers are notorious for not letting him know about whether he can or can't go on vacation until the last minute.  He's hoping to get an answer this week.  I'll keep you updated.

I am down for the meet again and unless something out of my control comes up I don't see any difficulty making it this year.  The sooner we can get a plan, the better since I would like to be able to put in the vacation time as soon as possible.  Anyone have thoughts on where to have the meet this year?  We could do it at my place, but it may be easier for Que and Pyro if we do it at Pyro's place again since they are in the same city basically unless someone has a different idea.

Ok so leaving on the 18th is easy enough. Just wondering when I should come in. I know Belmont wanted to coordinate a bit so we could come in on the same day and save a trip to the train station. Pyro is busy on the 11th (I think), but Que could pick us up. I mean if we wanted that extra half day. Or...whatever. Just getting this all figured out so I can order tickets.

Thoughts?

Yea you guys should probably come to the house. I know my Dad is going out of town but Im not sure if he leaves on that Sunday but I know my brother should at least be there and if not than give me a call or text, but the crappy part about that is my phone doesn't work well at the house so if you call, leave a voicemail. Indeed there will, and in fact we need to start planning! What timeframe is looking good for everyone?

Also I think we should plan some kind of menu this year. I like eating out as much as the next person and we totally will be eating out, but if we all pitched in $20 for groceries we could probably have a good number of meals taken care of cheap, plus we wouldn't have to interrupt any potential board games to go eat. Don't worry about eggs, I'm probably going to bring 4 dozen with me. I can do crockpot lasagna, biscuits and sausage gravy, clam chowder soup, all sorts of stuff. Heck, just buy some brats and hamburger for the grill.

So yeah, lets get hype!

I ended up only being able to get off Monday the 11th through Saturday the 16th.  If that's ok with everyone, then I will leave my request alone and start focusing on buying train tickets soon.

Yeah that should be good. I talked to pyro in IRC and he wanted the 17th to get back on his sleep schedule. So I will probably be coming in the 9th and leaving the 16th. So...bonus, only one trip to the train station at the end!

I'm sorry to say this, but I won't be able to do it this year. Some things came up and it's not going to be possible. I probably won't be on much here either anymore. Again, really sorry.

Yeah, that'd be ok. We can work something out.

That's ok with me. If you end up figuring out a date, just give me as much notice as you can so I can make sure to request that time off from work.

Alright so this is the date that looks pretty concrete: June 3rd - 9th. A buddy of mine from Nashville is also going to be joining us. So again its going to be here at the house, I'll look into getting another air mattress or two so we can have additional sleep space.

Is this date good with you guys?

Sounds ok to me. I asked and as far as I know I have nothing going on then.

Those dates are fine with me, but I don't think I am going to be able to request them off. Most of the request time for that week has already been taken up by my co-workers.  I'll talk to my supervisor on Monday and see if something can be done, but I'm doubtful.

SUPER AWESOME EDIT 3/12/13: I was able to get the time off since they loaded more time into our request system for that month. So I will be off from June 1st - June 11th.

Woot! I'm going to watch for sales on tickets in the coming months, maybe score a discount if I'm lucky.

Hopefully you'll be around, Que. We're getting the band back together.

Oh pyro, I wanted to ask when you wanted Belmont and I to come in? We're gonna try sync up our train schedules so there are fewer trips to the station. Like, should we be coming in on the 2nd (Sunday) or the 3rd? Or...whatever.
Title: Re: OWmeet Thread - An Annual Production by the OW Monkeys

You can come in on the 2nd (Sunday), I don't get off till 3:30pm so anytime in the later afternoon or evening is fine on that day. As for the return trip, anytime on the 8th (Saturday) is good.

My PTO has been approved by work so I am good on my end. I should start looking up possible things we can do that week.

I'm probably going to be doing some school over that period now, but minimal. Like an hour in the mornings each day. But that means I likely won't be able to join you guys for quite as long, or for breakfasty periods. I should be done by 10 each day (assuming it works out that I go).

Yea, we're totally doing this. (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1029890)

Quote
Howto Splitscreen L4D2
1. Type in ss_map and choose a map.
2. Type in the console after its loaded connect_splitscreen localhost 2
3. After it loads you will have splitscreen.

LAN Splitscreen (4 Players on 2 PCs)

---1. Create a dedicated LAN server.
---2. Set sv_allow_lobby_connect_only to 0
---3. Use ss_map (map name)
---4. For each computer use connect_splitscreen localhost (dedicated server ip) 2
---5. use cmd and cmd2 to select teams, if in versus.

And versus does work perfectly fine for this. In order to play versus, just append it to the map command: ss_map (map name) versus
If you want the split screen to go horizontal instead of vertical type this command in: ss_splitmode 1

So tomorrow is the big travel day and I'll get there at 1:25PM on Sunday. Hopefully the weather doesn't cause any delays or problems but I'll give a call if that's the case.

Did the train ride go ok?
Title: Re: OWmeet Thread - An Annual Production by the OW Monkeys
Post by: idolminds on Monday, June 10, 2013, 08:30:44 AM
Trip home was ok. I got on, found a window seat, and no one sat next to me until we got to Alton, IL the next day. There was a lady with a baby across the aisle from me but I just put in my headphones and listend to the bombcast and music so it didn't bother me.

The more interesting train ride was the local train taking me out of Chicago to Crystal Lake. First some drugged up dude was about to start some shit when he thinks someone stole his phone. Turns out he left it in the bathroom. He was pretty embarrassed and moved to the next car. Then some old dude with a bike gets on and starts talking to this lady in front of me about cosmology and how religion has been disproven. Lady in front of me was clearly not going to change her mind by these arguments but the guy kept going. Ugh...it was so painful because they were both arguing like idiots. Eventually she shut that shit down and the subject changed. Thats when he started talking about the naked bike ride he went on and I wanted to kill myself.

The lady had her 4 year old grandson with her and he went into the bathroom at least 10 times on the 2 hour train ride. As we were getting off the train, another guy complimented her on how well behaved the kid was. I made a WTF face and got the fuck off the train.

So what happened with you guys? I ended up walking past you talking to the conductors and getting on my train first.

Well, the bad news is I definitely won't be able make it to this year. The good news is that if I pull the next few months off I might be able to consider it next year.

Edited: Thanks Que

Yeah. I edited it to fix a typo. I can't this year (timing will put me in a world of crazy, more than usual). If things work out like I think they might over the next few months I might be able to get away with it next year if the timing is right. We'll see.

I need to see when my mom will be done with her eye surgeries. She goes in for the first eye beginning of Feb and they should schedule the second one soon after once they see how the first one heals up. Also need to see if dad can pay me so I can buy tickets. I mean, I can buy them but...yeah. Money.

Also I'm down with doing a bunch of cooking this year.

I guess about 3/8 to 3/16 is spring break for me (Classes back on 3/17 and actual break begins on a Monday, 3/10). No idea if I have anything else going on around then, but I don't think so. I guess it doesn't matter anyway as I doubt anyone's planning to stay here (I'm assuming, of course, Corey still has the space). Our new place out in Watauga is probably a good 30 mins or so from Corey now.

Yea my spring break is the same as Que's. If that's too early then early May would be good too when my spring semester ends which I think is May 9th or 10th.

Just out of curiosity, how good of an idea is it to plan a meet up at your place with your brother in his current condition?  Not that he won't be well by then, but you have to consider too the possibility that he is not.  Would having a bunch of dudes up in the house do anything to exacerbate the situation if he were not better by then?

You know your brother way better than I do.  I'm just curious if you've debated whether this is currently a good idea.

Yea March would probably be too early, Belmont can't do it that week anyway. May would be the next best month for me. Also something else we can consider is to have the meet in Austin, way more stuff to do there than Fort Worth/Dallas. Rachel's sister lives there so I know Rachel and I could stay there leaving Belmont's place in San Marcos open for people to stay. How do you guys feel about that?
