Title: Game of Thrones
Post by: Xessive on Saturday, May 14, 2011, 12:49:01 PM
I just started watching this show and I am amazed. Excellent production quality, engaging story, fantastic setting, and brilliantly drawn characters with a heck of a cast.

Only 4 episodes so far but I'm enthralled!

I like this show a lot too, much more than I like Camelot ( I can't stand the kid who plays Arthur).

I've been liking both Camelot and GOT.
But, yes, I agree - GOT is the much better show.

Though, Camelot did have their best episode last Friday night since the first two episodes...

I like Game of Thrones better because even though it has it's fantasy elements, it seems more grounded. I think its because of character development, while Camelot feels a bit more rushed.

Like I said before, I hate the kid that plays Arthur in Camelot, he steals people's gals (even his own brother's and thinks its funny) and his "king attitude" seems forced.

GoT is so visceral! It also has quite a few "WHAT THE F*CK!!" moments hehe

Like the end of last night's episode.

I watched the first episode the night before last. And I was immediately hooked. Thing is, I was planning on reading the books before I watched the show. So, I got the first book for my kindle and I am currently devouring it.

After reading all the praise, I hunted down the first episode.  Damn, that got me hooked.  I have a few more to watch now.  Next one tonight at dinnertime.

So does the first season pretty much cover the first book or not even close?

Just finished watching episode 6.  Just one more to catch up.

Supposedly the first seasons covers the entire first book. The second season the second book and so on.

After reading the first 1/3 of the book, I went back and watched the first episode. Of course some things were changed, or just slightly moved around, only a couple things were omitted from the show.

Yeah, that's bullshit.  I've been sailing past the artificial cliffhangers by starting up the next episode after I finish watching one.  Then I stop it after I see the resolution.  But I can't do that with E7.  Is this it for the season?  I don't see mention of E8 out there.

Which means I'll catch it during the week sometime.  Sandy doesn't get HBO.  Looking forward to it, thanks.

Yeah, I watched it.  Man, I can't stand having to wait the full week now between episodes.  While I was playing catch up, it moved right along.

Yeah, in the exact same boat.  This was the first one I had to wait at all for, and pretty sure it wasn't a week.  It's going to be unbearable.  I'm just thinking of crushing the books out.

I'm reading the books right now. They are fantastic. Sure Tolkien pretty much defined the fantasy genre, but I honestly think Game of Thrones is the better series between the two.

I've been looking for all the first editions of the book. I must have them.

I've been thinking along those lines too.  Hmm.  Looks like I've located some ebooks.  Chapter organization is hard to follow, as it seems to go by character names.  It will take me a while to find what the series has covered so far (assuming it follows the first book linearly) without getting too far ahead into spoilers for myself.  For example, Chapter 8 covers, er, a certain bad fall.

During my searches, I also found a pen-and-paper RPG.  Heh.  Very detailed, with lots of back story and decent artwork.

Was episode 10 the season finale? I wasn't aware of that.  If so, that sucks we are going to have wait for the next season.

I still haven't watched episode 10 (later tonight), but everyone seems hooked by it.  Thank god I got my ebook reader just in time.  I'm hammering through the first book trying to get to the second.

#10 is from the books and the show didn't cover it. In the books, the Lannisters find out about Ned's plot because his daughter Sansa tells them everything after she was manipulated by the Queen.

Dude, spoiler tag! :P

I will say that Sansa does seem smarten up after the current events, in the book at least. We'll have to wait for the second season to see if the TV series will follow suit.

I haven't read the books, just some synopses. I really should read the books.

Damn that was a cliffhanger at the end. I didn't realize that I watched the first season so close to when it aired - the last episode was a few weeks ago. Now I am going to have to wait forever to see

I'm absolutely done with this show.  "Red Wedding" was the final straw.

Quote
Okay, here’s something you need to know about Game of Thrones: everyone, and I mean everyone, dies.  I’m not sure what the “game” in Game of Thrones is, but I’m pretty sure it’s the same “game” as The Hunger Games. Everyone who goes into it is going to die. Only unlike The Hunger Games, where it’s just the kids dying — when I say everybody, I mean everybody. George R. R. Martin is your emotionally abusive boyfriend. He will systematically kill the things you love. Stop loving them. You are essentially loving the victim of the week you see die within the first five minutes of every crime drama, only George R. R. Martin makes those first five minutes last for a while, because he’s a sadistic jerk who likes to make you cry. And I can hear, like, five of you going “wait, there are people George R. R. Martin hasn’t killed yet!” Congrats. Technically, you are right. For now, anyway. But he also hasn’t finished the book series, and you know by the next book, I’m probably going to be right.

It took me three years but I finally got over how crappy the forth book was and started the fifth. Only 50 pages in and it's already much better.

Has the show caught up to the books yet? I only watched the first season.

Not yet.  To be honest, I don't think it was that the fourth book was that bad, I think the third was just that good.   I remember being kind of let down by the fifth as well.

Everyone knows the show is going to catch up at this point.  GRRM still kind of denies it, but he's pretty much not capable of finishing both books before the show winds up.  His latest statment is something like:

Quote
I'm now worried about it catching up, but if they split the next two books into two seasons each I might be able to do it - especially since they have to alter the format from the books as the following two aren't in chronological order.  The last one will still be very tight though.

Of course that's a really shit idea, especially if you've read the last two books.   There's already almost not enough there to make two full seasons all that compelling for television.

The show creators (I may have made this up) have said something like:

Quote
We've been briefed on a rough summary and timeline of the overall plot of the series.  We can progress beyond the books if it comes to it

I think the second option is what's going to happen.  Of course that's problematic, because I'm sure the publishers will shit a brick if that happens  - it will probably cut their sales in half...at least. My guess (and I think this is a cool idea that I made up, but I'm sure it's a thing out there) is that they pick a point and diverge into two different timelines, showing how one event can change everything for Westeros - I think it'd be a decent way to keep the casual fans interested in both the TV show and the books.  My guess for the divergent point would be
(click to show/hide)

In either case, I think it's too close at this point for them to not have a contingency plan that the publishers and the producers are both somewhat satisfied with.  No one has faith in GRRM (nor should they)

What the fuck. They need to postpone the series until the final book is out. They can't do this. The show sucks. It is just long scenes of dialog and exposition where nothing happens! Ugh.

Damnit I need to start watching this season.

It's funny, I was having this debate with myself of torrenting episodes, then started to look up using a proxy, then proxy service pricing, then realized I can just pay HBO and get it over with.

That was a hell of a season, I'm still fuzzy on a handful of details but I haven't rewatched any of it since nor read the books past the first one, but the show still seems to hold every bit of my attention with each episode.

Some questions and spoilers:
