A new Company of Heroes hotfix is now available, which brings Relic's World War II real-time strategy game to version 1.6.1, addressing a bug where Allied halftracks were resistant to some forms of damage. The small update can be found on FileFront, FileShack, and Gamer's Hell.

Hmm... should I reinstall CoH on Vista? It could be worth it since I haven't played CoH yet at all...

I dunno...it's supposed to be a great RTS.

Plus, when CoH: Opposing Forces comes out, if you have CoH already installed on there, you'll have extra teams/classes you can pick from in the MP, if I recall correctly.

I don't think anyone bought a DX10 card solely because of its DX10 performance. I mean sure, they were future proof, but what was more important was that  the 8800s ruled the DX9 games.

But yes, it does suck that not many DX10 games are out. Have you installed Vista yet Scottws?

GOLDEN.

Expect this one at the end of this month, Sept.

Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts Goes Gold For PC

THQ Inc. today announced Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts, developed by award-winning Real-Time Strategy (RTS) developer Relic Entertainment, has reached the gold master stage of development and is now entering manufacturing. Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts is the next installment in one of the highest-rated RTS franchises of all time, building on the success of the original Company of Heroes with two new armies and vastly enhanced multiplayer options. Developed for Windows PC, the game is expected to begin shipping to retail outlets in North America later this month.

"Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts delivers the most cinematic and intense RTS experience available on any platform," said Kevin Kraff, director of global brand management, THQ. "Relic Entertainment's reputation is legendary among strategy gamers and Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts blasts away all previous benchmarks for brutally dynamic battlefield action."

"Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts is a massive game, featuring two new campaigns with more campaign content than the original, significant enhancements to our proprietary Essence engine, and two totally unique new armies for multiplayer action," said Tarrnie Williams, general manager, Relic Entertainment. "We've consistently redefined the standard for excellence in the RTS genre over the last five years, and Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts represents another leap forward in technology and strategic gameplay."

Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts is the next chapter in the critically acclaimed Company of Heroes franchise. Players take command of the German Panzer Elite as they struggle against the might of the Allied forces, or lead the British 2nd Army in the vicious battle for Caen, France. Internally developed by Relic Entertainment, this standalone title does not require the original Company of Heroes to play, features two unique armies with full length campaigns, new multiplayer options when combined with the original Company of Heroes, Microsoft DirectX 10 support, mission persistence, improved vehicle and soldier AI, enhanced physics and a dynamic weather system. Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts is fully compatible with the original Company of Heroes, allowing players to wage war with four unique armies.

1.8GB patch

What the fuck, did they include the expansion or something?

Speaking of which, Opposing Fronts got a patch as well, 140MB.

I don't trust this patch.  That link is the only place I can find it.  It's not on 3dgamers.com or in the updates section of the official CoH site.  It also doesn't say anything about what the patch does.

According to a comment on Blues News, the patch adds the 2 new armies and all the new maps so you can play MP with the people that buy the expansion (though I imagine you can't play the new armies). So...yeah, it is the expansion. Haha...

Company of Heroes patch; Biggest patch ever?

1.8GB patch
Shit -- that's huger than Two Worlds 1.5 "Service" Patch (which is basically made for those who don't own the recently released US, AU, and UK Editions of the game, which include Version 1.5 of the game right in the box). That patch is 1.05 GB. Shit, and I thought *that* was a huge-ass patch!!!

*That* patch got nothing on COH!!

No, why would it?

Well, shit -- they added all the MP maps in the patch!! heh!

What I mean, is they just gave HALF of the Opposing Forces part of the game away w/ that new update for Original COH!

Well...sorta. See, YOU can't play the Opposing Forces armies without buying the expansion, but you can play AGAINST people that can use the armies. Though you get to mess with the new maps, I suppose.

However, you can't do a skirmish match against the new armies/maps. Online only. So unless you plan on playing against someone that has the expansion you won't be able to see any of it.

Wow, this is stupid.  So you have to download some almost 2 GB patch to play online now.  And this patch contains all the art assets from the expansion.  But you basically have to pay the $30 for the scripting or whatever that is in the expansion.

I mean I kind of see what they are doing, but at the same time logically it is very stupid when analyzed.

I am really late to the party, but I finally started this. So far it is quite impressive. I like their take on the RTS scene, and the gameplay feels fresh... granted the last RTS I recall playing was WarCraft 3.

Ok, now I'm torn about which expansion to go for.. Opposing Fronts or DoW: Soulstorm.

I love both games, but I have the DoW Anthology so I'm leaning toward completing that set.

It is, but I wish there was a German campaign.  I think that is one thing I don't like about the Relic RTS'.  They don't really flesh out the SP much.  You get one campaign with one race.  Then you have to go online or skirmish or buy expansions.

I liked how in Starcraft all three races had a campaign.

I'd agree except that I never finish big campaigns with RTS games.  Shorter is better for me there.  What I really liked was the Dark Crusade expansion for DoW and the way it was sort of a campaign and sort of not.  That really did it for me.  I was totally hooked.

I wonder if the new races from the next expansion will integrate into that?  Probably not because it wouldn't be very balanced (unless you could just choose to replace other races with them), but fuck that would be awesome.

Well I just completed the Hill 318 missions. I have to say, I found the second really frustrating and spent too much time shouting at my monitor. While the first mission where I had to hold the hill used an RTS cliche, at least it was interesting and made sense.

The mission that followed, where I had to hold sectors of 318 to gain points just took me out of the game. Firstly it was extremely tough, but more importantly just seemed too gimmicky to be suitable for a single player campaign mission. It was the only mission I didn't like, though when I finally won, I was exhilarated.

Yeah, I love how they set up the Dark Crusade campaign!

Rise of Nations had a campaign mode set up like that too I believe.

I like that style coz it's more like Risk and you can actually duke it out manually!

I think the length of CoH was perfect in that almost each mission felt fresh. I don't know how they could have made a storyline with you playing as the Nazis actually. Plus I get the impression that most developers have you play as every race just because they are supposed to, and the the originality gets lost.

I haven't picked up OF but I did just reinstall the original. It is a great game!

The one little delay was the updating process. One patch (in the series I had to install) is 1.75 GB alone! The remainder piled up to about 300 MB or so.
