Last night I ended up buying 2 games, Hook Worlds and Cause of Death. Hook Worlds is a great "run forever" game, but with grappling hooks and several different themes. But I wanted to make a post about Cause of Death.

Cause of Death FREE
Cause of Death

I ended up buying it before I realized what the free version was. No big deal since it was only $.99 anyway. The free version is basically an ad supported version, otherwise I guess its the same thing.

The game is basically a visual novel like Phoenix Wright. You're a detective and have to solve crimes. Lots of still images and dialog, along the way you have to make choices, and some of the choices you have to make quickly. The cool part is every week there is a new "episode" released for free. But it only "airs" that week. After that you can buy it from the "on demand" shop. Right now there is still only the first episode because this just came out, but I'm totally enjoying it. So definitely check it out if you liked Phoenix Wright, or like cop shows, or murder mysteries.

I have the following Android games and I think they're pretty good... though they are still not up to the caliber of what iOS is getting like Infinity Blade and Rage:

Angry Birds -- obviously good. Yep have this and it's decent.  I like Crush the Castle on Armor Games more for some reason.
Angry Birds Seasons -- seasonal version of Angry Birds.  Free; currently has the Halloween and Christmas themes. I have this too.  I'm having a lot of trouble with it.  Hard!
Buka -- shmup like game.  Simple but fun.  You touch and hold on a point on the screen to shoot to clear the path for your character.  There's a free version so try it out first before you buy.
Fruit Ninja -- same as the iOS version.  I have a free game called Ninja Kaka, which I presume is similar.  It was fun for about 10 minutes.
Flight Director -- There are a couple variants of this on the market but I think this one is the best because it offers the most maps and uses 'real' airports.  You direct planes to land.  Pretty cool.  I like this one.
Retro Defense -- good defense game
Robo Defense -- another good defense game  This was the first Android game I got.  It was decent, but I found myself wishing for an Android version of Defense Grid.
SliceIt -- Same as iOS version, but this one is free.  One drawback is fairly intrusive ads though.
Spaghetti Marshmallow -- great game on Android.  You build structures using spaghettis and marshmallows to try and reach objects.  Kind of like World of Goo and other physics based construction puzzles.  Really challenging once you get past the demo stages though.  I love World of Goo, but I couldn't get into this.  Either I don't like the mechanics or I'm missing some piece of them.
SteamBirds -- good turn based flight strategy game.  There's a flash version of the game for free on the web though.  Yeah, I have the demo.  It was okay.  Don't think it's something I'd pay for.
Totemo -- from the same developers as Buka.  This one is a brain teaser though where you have to clear the screen in groups of 2, 3, 4, 5.
Speedx 3D -- like Wipeout in 'Pure' mode.  Try and survive as long as possible.  One of my favorite games on Android at the moment.  Sweet game.
aTilt 3D -- I just downloaded this one and it's kind of fun.  Yeah there are so many Labyrinth games though.  I didn't like this one as much as another on I had.

Just an update on that Cause of Death game. I found this post on Toucharcade:
Quote
Glad you guys are liking the game so far! To answer the question of how the episode mechanics work:

- The game ships with all of 'Volume One'.

- New chapters of Volume two are released each week as 'Now Airing' episodes. For the duration of the time an episode is 'Now Airing', it is free to download and play. Until Friday 12/24, the Now Airing episode will be “Volume Two, Chapter One: Tough Love”.

- At the end of each week, the current 'Now Airing' episode moves to 'Episodes on Demand' where it will be available for purchase, and a new episode becomes 'Now Airing'.

Basically, when you buy the game, you get access to free, new episodes each week. If you miss playing an episode while it is free, want to catch up, or want to be able to replay it after the week is done, you can purchase it from the On Demand store. Once you buy an episode from the On Demand store, it is yours forever and will not disappear.

Jamie, to answer your question, the game ships with "Volume One", which is a huge complete crime story that is made up of 6 chapters.

The subsequent weekly chapters will make up Volume Two, so when put together, they will tell a complete story. Think of it like TV show seasons and episodes
I just finished Volume One, the free "season". Even on its own its probably worth the buck I paid. I really enjoyed it. Then I played the currently airing Volume 2, Chapter 1. Like some TV shows, it has a subtle story thats going to span across the series, but it also has its own little self-contained story. Its a little shocking after playing Volume 1 because it was so long and one huge story to then play this and solve a crime in 10 minutes.

Overall I think its still worth checking out. I dont know how much the "seasons" will be when you can buy them, but if you keep up on the latest episode and dont care to replay them then its not a big deal.

EDIT

Oh, and one more thing. I noticed when playing the currently airing episode, ads were showing up. They didnt show when I was playing all of Volume 1, but I assume thats because I paid for it. I imagine you get ads when it airs, and if you buy it they go away. Kind of like TV/DVD again. The ads I saw were just still images that came down and covered the screen, clicking "continue" or the X in the corner got rid of it and went right back to the game. I wonder what I would see if I wasnt connected to wifi...

Hook Worlds is absolutely fantastic. Totally..uh...hooked on it. It has 4 worlds with the same basic grappling hook gameplay, but each one is slightly different enough that they could have been individual games. Perfect iphone gaming that you can play in quick bursts but is totally addicting. And its a dollar. Buy it!

Neuroshima Hex is on sale for $.99, so grab that too while you're at it.

Neuroshima Hex also just got an update with some features and fixes that make it even better.

And I'll totally have to grab Hook Worlds.  I was looking for a good infinite runner.

Hey, what was the name of the original one?  That cool grey and black and white one?  I was trying to show it to Sy the other night because he couldn't remember it but I couldn't think of the name.

Apple makes some very stupid decisions about a lot of things (stuff Ive already bitched about). But I found a new one!

I don't have a credit card, so I just go buy gift cards and apply them to my account so I can buy things. Works fine. Today I decided I wanted to gift an app to someone. I fill in everything and it tells me I need to fill in my billing info. I go through, address is correct and everything...oh, it wants me to add a credit card. What for? Just take it out of my balance. I already gave you money!

So yeah, if you have an iTunes balance like that then they won't let you buy gifts for people with it. Retarded.

Phoenix Spirit is free today. According to Toucharcade, its a Metroidvania style game where you use the tilt controls to fly around as a flying squirrel. I'm down with that.

The Oregon Trail is 99 cents! Now I can give all my friends dysentery or have them carried off by eagles.

Pinball HD for iPhone is also 99 cents. NOTE: Pinball HD for iPhone supports only iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4, and all iPod Touch 3rd gen devices except 8GB model! But if you meet those requirements, this is a great pinball game. 4 tables, looks fantastic, physics seem good. Seems to be the pinball game people suggest. If you have an older device, they have the individual tables for 99 cents as their own apps. Kind of a weird setup.

I also found out ChuChu Rocket! will be 99 cents starting tomorrow. Will get!

Indie games sale

Canabalt
Solipskier
Spider:The Secret of Bryce Manor
Osmos
Eliss
Drop7

All $.99 each, and a third of what they make (after Apple takes their cut) is going to Childs Play.

Words With Friends is a buck for the ad-free version.

Wispin is free. Looks like its got some good reviews, so why not?

Looks like the Sega sale is on, time for ChuChus! And strangely, I've decided not to get any of those indie games. Drop7 doesnt interest me, Eliss' difficulty ramps up fast and is really difficult, Osmos I got on PC now, I dont like spiders....and Canabalt, I dunno. I think for 99 cents Hook Worlds is a superior "run forever" game.

One more day left for the Indie Sale

I bought Canabalt and Solipskier, undecided on the rest but they seem to be highly regarded and are only $1 each...I'm tempted to splurge and just get them.

What I'm finding amazing though, is the charity donation.
Quote
We've put our most popular games on sale for just $0.99 each, some for the first time ever, and a third of all our sales (after Apple takes their share) will be donated to Child's Play!
Apple takes 30%, and whatever is left over they donate 1/3rd of that. I did the math and for every game sold, they donate 23 cents.

They've raised $30,376.62 for charity so far. Thats insane.

This ones a weird one, but its from Japan so that explains it.

Barcode KANOJO

Remember Monster Rancher for the PS1? You would stick a random CD in and it would read the data and generate a monster. This is the same idea, except instead of reading CDs you scan barcodes. And instead of monsters you generate anime chicks. Which you take care of or some shit. The funny part is if someone else scans the same barcode, they can spend their efforts to steal the girl from you.

I thought that was a hilarious idea and went to check it out, but the damn thing wont scan barcodes on the ipod 4g, probably due to the camera (its not that great). It scans QR codes just fine, but not UPC, though I know its possible because Redlaser scans UPC codes fine. Anyway, I thought that was a funny twist.

Ok, so a page back I mentioned buying Pinball HD for iPhone for some pinball action. Its really nice and looks great. "Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), and iPad." (copy and paste)

Comes with 3 tables and its only $0.99, at least it still is from when I bought it.

Now, if you have an older device or are a cheapskate, you can now get those 3 tables...free!

Wild West Pinball
The Deep Pinball
Jungle Style Pinball

They won't look quite as good since I guess the HD version added the retina display stuff and higher res textures, and they are separate apps so switching between tables requires a little extra effort, but for free these are totally worth it. Get them.

I found a cool game.

Pixel Ninja

Its pretty much what Tenchu would be if they made it for the SNES. There is a lite/demo version available to try out. Gives you 5 levels. Or maybe those are just like..."mini" levels? I mean they say the full game has 20 levels but I blew through the 5 in the demo in no time. Still for 99 cents its probably not a bad deal. Definitely give the demo a spin.

I've tried a few poker apps mostly to practice playing poker which I normally don't get a chance to so when I'm at family gatherings I have no clue how to play. So I've given a few a whirl and found something cool.

Word Ace

Its hold'em, but the cards have letters on them with point values (like Scrabble tiles), and at the end of a hand you have to spell the best word you can. Its fun.

The thing I don't like are the timers. Its hard to play since it requires a bit more...random access memory than poker. There are only so many poker hands you have to keep in mind, but in Word Ace you can spell any 2-7 letter word. Thats a lot to think about in the few seconds it gives you.

It would be way better to play with an actual deck of Word Ace cards. I'm so tempted to order this.

Note, there is also the app Card Ace: Casino. The company had several card game apps on the store and this one combines them all into a single app so you can play poker, blackjack, and Word Ace online. I linked to the original WA app because you can play it in practice mode against bots, where the Casino app is online or nothing. Sadly I can't seem to play either one online at home without lagging out, which is strange since I've got 2 other poker apps I can play fine with.

Hey Arkham Horror players! Check out the Arkham Horror Toolkit!
Quote
The Arkham Horror Toolkit is the ultimate accessory for Arkham Horror, the Fantasy Flight Games classic cooperative board game of Lovecraftian terror and adventure. This suite of custom digital components has been designed to make your games even more fluid and fun, eliminating the need for additional bookkeeping and shuffling!

The Arkham Horror Toolkit includes:
Arkham Horror custom dice roller
Investigator tracking sheet
Arkham Location and Gate cards
Interactive maps

A major appealing aspect of the Arkham Horror Toolkit is the digital library of Location and Gate encounter cards that can be used to randomly resolve your encounters without having to shuffle cards. Not only does this make setup even easier, but when used with the included Investigator tracking sheet, is a great way to face the Ancient One in a solitaire game!
Looks pretty snazzy, and if you don't have to screw with the cards so much well thats just win. App is $3, and there are in app purchases for the various expansions.

Something interesting. Apple has a contest of sorts going on. If you download the 10 billionth app from iTunes, you will get $10,000 in iTunes credit.

The upside of course is with everything being so cheap on there you can basically buy everything you ever wanted and never run out. The downside is the $2500 in taxes you'd have to pay for receiving the prize.

A couple things:

Dungeon Defenders: First Wave dropped to $.99. Unreal engine powered action RPG/tower defense game. I'll probably grab it. Supposedly you can play it online with people playing the PC version, at least thats what I read not too long ago.

iDOS is back and free. This was released on the app store a few months ago but was quickly pulled. Basically a port of DOSBox and Apple didnt like that you could just put any old DOS game on your ipod and play it. Well the new update removes the ability to just copy games directly in iTunes, so it comes with a few games and I guess you "buy" more in-game. Or something. I'm getting it to experiment. I mean...its free so why not?

Gameloft has a video of its next game Sacred Odyssey: Rise of Ayden. AKA, iZelda.

EDIT
Its been confirmed that you can install other DOS games in the new version of iDOS, no jailbreaking required. So grab it...it'll probably be pulled again, haha.

It seems Dungeon Defenders has control issues, partly because there is so much to do they threw buttons all over the place. Kind of a UI nightmare. I suppose I will wait and see if it gets updated and then wait for the next sale.
