Coming from Capcom.

I'm pretty much sold on it already.

That does look fucking pretty!

It looks like Monster Hunter meets Demons' Souls meets Oblivion meets Shadow of the Colossus!

My description of the preview footage was accurate! The game totally feels like a blend of those games.

Dragon's Dogma is what my mind imagined when people described Dark Souls to me (except with party members). Dark Souls can suck it, that game is not fun at all. There's only one game that has ever made death fun: Grimm Fandango.

Anyway, DD is a blast! Its massive world is filled with epic moments battling mobs or enormous beasts. Death comes easily if you're unprepared and much like Dark Souls the game doesn't warn when you've wandered into a region you can't handle. On the plus side you can save any time you like (out of combat).

Now, on the down side there is no multiplayer, however there is an online component: pawns. These are essentially your party members who you can enlist. You get to create your own pawn fairly early in the game, it's a full character creation process too. There are some local pawns (generated by the game) you can recruit but what's more interesting are pawns created by other players that you can recruit from "The Rift." You can access the rift from any riftstone location, once you enter it will gradually populate with pawns from nearby players, alternatively while in the rift you can access a search menu and filter specifications for the types of pawns you're looking for or look up a friend's pawn.

Even more interesting is the knowledge you can bestow on pawns. When you enlist another player's pawn, it will learn as you play. Completing quests let's pawns give useful hints to a player (e.g. "We must take the right corridor here."), and battle tactics makes them more proficient against types of enemies (often yelling out the best strategies against them "This one hates fire!"). When the original creator of the pawn goes to an inn to rest upon waking up the pawn syncs and tells what he/she has learned. Also, when you retire a pawn you can give it a rating, a comment, and a gift you'd like to give to that player who created it.

It's an interesting online dynamic where you're not actively playing together but you are influencing the community of players.

Joystiq -> Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen trailer.

G4TV -> Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen info.
Quote
Capcom confirms that Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen will be released on April 23, 2013 in North America. The rehash of the publisher's 2012 open world RPG introduces a number of updates to the game, both to address issues players had with the original release and to add some enhancements that make your return to Gransys worthwhile.

Dark Arisen adds a large new underground realm to the game, with 25 new enemies to encounter there as well as an assortment of new missions. Other new features include the addition of level 3 skills, more than 100 pieces of new high-level equipment, more character/Pawn augments, added equipment enhancement options, and more.

There's more too. Those who already own the original Dragon's Dogma will receive 100,000 Rift Crystals (used to create fast travel markers), unlimited Ferrystones (used to travel to those markers), and the Gransys armor pack. New content will also integrate directly with your old Dragon's Dogma save. Dark Arisen comes to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as a $39.99 physical and digital release this April.

I believe I'll be grabbing the updated edition of this when it comes out.

When it gets cheap, of course.

I picked up Dragon's Dogma:  Dark Arisen with some birthday money.  I started it up last week.  So far I've had some difficulty getting into the game, but that may be more to do with the lack of large blocks of time to play.  I'm not particularly happy with how my character's look turned out, but I pressed on with the knowledge I could purchase a very expensive item to change looks down the road.

I think the comparisons to Dark Souls are, for the most part, unwarranted.  The game is unforgiving in that it doesn't explicitly tell you where you can and cannot go.  You find out the hard way when something comes out of nowhere and decimates you.  The combat doesn't really have any sort of "weight" like Dark/Demon's souls.  The game feels like SotC in the sense that a particular class can climb up on large enemies and attack them that way.  If anything comparisons to Monster Hunter are warranted.

I did have a neat experience which I've told to death in the IRC channel by now:  I took an escort quest out of the main city in the game.  I didn't exactly check to see where the escort quest terminated, but took off anyway.  I get about halfway there and realize I'm still a long way off.  Oh, and look, monsters that are way bigger than I am.  Great!  Thankfully we're able to take the high road and sneak our way to the destination.

The game has a pretty generous day/night cycle.  A full day takes about 48 minutes of real time, so you get a good chunk of daylight to do things.  When it gets dark all you have for light is a torch or lantern, which illuminates the area immediately around you.  Oh, and more monsters come out and are generally stronger.  When I finished the escort quest I was miles from any populated location.  I ended up having to camp out like a little bitch on a tall rock until morning.  Sort of a unique experience, for sure.  I felt like I was behind enemy lines or something.

I got this game and Dragon Age Origins at the same time, this game has taken up much more of my time. This game is a blast to play, if you can get past the non existent fast travel (heard this is fixed in the expansion...which is actually a whole game) and the somewhat clunky inventory, you'll love this game. I'll post a pic of my pimp looking character later, if I can.

Awesome. I think if we're PSN friends you can take my pawn on quests with you! Add me on PSN if you haven't already, username Zietoun.

Unless you're playing on Xbox 360.. Either way, enjoy the game! It can be unforgiving but it's pretty sweet.

I'm playing on the 360. I don't have Xbox Live Gold anymore, but I can still use the pawn system to it's full extent, which is nice. I really like the micro management you'll have to do with this game, you'll need to be prepared at all times and have the best gear money can buy if you want to live.

Is that a sequel to Dragon's Dogma or a repackage that adds the subtitle? I've never looked at this franchise even a little bit.

It was sort of an expansion, with added extras like some new enemy variants, some improved game mechanics, and a new area called Bitterblack Isle with super tough enemies but great rewards. It's essentially the "definitive" edition of the game.

I think it was briefly a free update for anyone who bought the original game (digital) before a certain date and then it became paid.

Ah, cool. Well, my PC won't run it, but I may be getting a new one at some point. Though I've got a million other RPGs I'd want to get through first ...

I've been slacking on this game, mostly because the quests give you no guidance at all on how to complete them. I don't know if its sloppy development or if they were trying to sell strategy guides (even in this day in age). They're some quests that you wouldn't be able to complete without looking online, there is just no way in hell yo could figure it out on your own.

Another small pet peeve of mine, is when you switch classes, equipping the gear you need is a pain in the ass. Its a long review, but I agree with this one the most.

Hopefully, the same can be said for most rigs. :)
Game launches next month (Jan 15th, 2016), so we'll all find out then for sure.

So, here's my question, in case anybody knows:

I've owned Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen for a while now on PS3 but never actually played it.  I'd like to get into it but am wondering if it'd be worthwhile to upgrade to the PC.   I'd lean towards no, but are there any major technical issues on the PS3 version that will end up driving me crazy?

The PS3 version is great but there are some differences. The most prominent differences are resolution, framerate, and framelock. The PS3 version is 720p, locked at 30 fps, but there are some areas where the framerate may dip a little below 30 depending on what's going on in the scene.

As long as you don't compare it side by side with the PC version you should be fine.

Haha don't watch it, GPW!! DON'T! ;D

I'd say if the PS3 still works, GPW can play it on there and see if it's fine. Might as well.
One could also always re-buy the game way later on Steam when it's MUCH cheaper.

Fuck!   I should have listened to you!

I guess I'm waiting for a sale now, ha. The resolution wouldn't have bothered me but I have a feeling the frame rate will get to me after I've seen that.

Yeah, that's what got me. It wasn't the higher res, or the sharper textures and shadows, it wasn't even the revised lighting engine.

I was a happy little tot in my 30 fps world until I played in 60+ fps and my reality was shattered. Now I can never go back! I cannot unlearn the truth! :P
