Re: Nvidia reveals GTX 1070 + 1080 cards, could produce Titan X performance...
« Reply #1 on: Saturday, May 07, 2016, 05:34:13 AM »
Anyways, The 1070 and 1080, given its specs, likely could put out Titan X performance type of numbers (holy crap!) for a MAJOR fraction of the cost + put out WAY less Watts (i.e. use less power, produce less heat & likely is going to be an Overclocker's heaven).

We won't know entirely on performance, of course - until they both are out at the end of May (GTX 1080) and early June (GTX 1070).

Given the push currently for 4K + VR and how upgraded consoles/new consoles are likely coming already to support VR and 4K (Playstation VR + new XBox rumors been flying) and also that Nvidia has been sucking in all DX12 games especially when compared to AMD cards (i.e. go see Quantum Break PC, as one example) - this could very well be NVidia's new big dog on the market.
Basically, within ONE new generation of cards (since the 900 series), they could be killing off their own 900 series of cards (i.e. the 960's, 970's, and 980's)!

So, Titan X cards are 12GB VRAM cards DDR5 that often go for about a $1000 and up.

GTX 1070 is likely going to be around the $400-500 ballpark ($449 for Founder's Edition, regular ed will probably be cheaper); while 1080 is going to be $600 for regular edition and around $700 for Founders.
Both 1070 and 1080 are rocking (supposedly) 8GB of VRAM.

This is going to be interesting...

8 GB VRAM NVidia GeForce GTX 1070 Reviews:

Hot Hardware.
Legit Reviews.
Guru 3D.
GameSpot.
PC World.
PC Gamer.
Hard OCP.

MysterD's analysis from many of the reviews + benchmarks he's been reading on this card:
In short, from most reviews & benchmarks:
GTX 1070 looks like the best "bang-for buck" enthusiast card ($349-449 range), topping both the 6GB 980 Ti ($600-700) and Titan X ($1000+) in almost every game!
In DX12 games: AMD Fury X (around $600-700) might have the edge performance-wise over GTX 1070, but it's by very little.
1080p at max settings for 60FPS, GTX 1070 card can handle that easily without breaking a sweat. Basically, this card can be considered overkill for 1080p.
1440p at max settings at either 30FPS or 60FPS (depends per game and where you want to cap it at) looks to be very capable in most instances for 1070 card. This looks to be a strong 1440p card.
At 4K (2160p), you'll likely get 30FPS in most games or close to it in demanding games; but don't expect max-out settings with it. Turn some stuff down, if you want to go over 30FPS.
At 4K (2160p), GTX 1080 is FAR more capable (and costs way more at $600-700) than GTX 1070.

I'm really pretty excited about all this. Putting off upgrading for so long and now I can get in on a great card performance- and price-wise. Also considering my monitor is only 1600x900 it'll just murder anything I throw at it at that res.

@Idol

The 1070 looks like overkill for 1080p, nevermind 900p. You'd be having a grand old time at 900p with a 1070, obviously! If you buy a 1070 and later if you do decide to get a better monitor - i.e. a monitor 1080p or 1440p - you've already future-proofed and just be already to go at those resolutions - since the 1070 looks like it has not many problems w/ 1080p or 1440p! :)

It would be interesting to see if NVidia does do a say GTX 1060 card, if it'd surpass or come close to the 980 Ti or Titan X performance. A 1060 would fall likely in the $200-250 range, given the history of any x60 cards. Some just might not still be willing to pony-up for a 1070.

Yeah hearing about the AMD cards on a podcast just now, and it has me interested. Since I will be on kind of a strict budget plus my monitor is fairly "low res" compared to what most people run, that $200-250 card is really appealing to me.

1600x900
Oh, yeah - GTX 1070's definitely overkill for that; nevermind the GTX 1080! GTX 1070's even overkill for 1080p60FPS.

Hell, the 4GB 960 SC that I have does quite good at 1080p - i.e most games at Max settings for most games at 30FPS or 60FPS; FPS max depends per game.

Hmmm, I do wonder how my 4GB 960 performs at 900p; never tried. I'm a 1080p guy on this desktop. You might want to check some benchmarks. 4GB 960 performs very similar to the 2GB 960, but offers more VRAM buffer (for higher textures + higher settings) and often gets same to a few frames more per game.

Often, for me, w/ that 4GB 960 card, if in-game I've capped it out at 60FPS and say the performance is often b/t 30FPS and 60FPS, especially if it's bouncing up, down, around and whatnot - I'll add an additional 40FPS for my common middle ground that I just cap games around that via MSI Afterburner, afterwards. Usually, that 40FPS cap via Afterburner for me can stable a game out - or any other framerate that I can find a game often sticking at in most instances. Sometimes, though - I can do better than that, if a framerate for a certain game is commonly landing elsewhere (i.e. say 50FPS).

Still, I really wouldn't touch any older cards below 1000 series or below RX 480 (b/c these look like the biggest video card jump for ONE generations of cards in a very long time) - unless you can get those older cards ridiculously cheap in some kind of killer clearance sale, someone wants to sell it cheap to you, or (even better!) someone just flat-out gives it away to you.

If you still don't mind spending the $349-449, best reason to go for a 1070 at 900p60FPS, is to future-proof - especially for Max settings at 1440p60FPS + 4K at around 30FPS.

But, with AMD pushing the RX 480 at $200 - if you don't mind using AMD, you might want to wait for benchmarks and reviews on that RX 480. You could wait and see from there - and see if you'd rather invest in a GTX 1070 or 1080; or save money and go AMD with the RX 480.

On most newer AMD cards with DX12 games - in which, BTW there ain't many DX12 games yet (those currently require Windows 10), BTW - the Fury X will out-do any other card except GTX 1080; and we know Ashes of Singularity (DX12 game) is performing well on RX 480. It'll be interesting to see RX 480 performs against other DX11 games, b/c NVidia's always had the advantage there, with most of their recent line of cards.

PC Gamer - 4GB GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is supposedly coming soon on Oct 18th and will retail for around $149.

Looks like we have the possible NVidia GTX 950 killer + another NVidia card here (they also have the 3GB GTX 1060 version) to compete w/ AMD's RX480 ($200).
This is going to be interesting.

@Idol

Wait until benchmarks come out - see how it performs.

Personally, at $150 - if 1050 Ti performs well, that's pretty cheap. I guess it'll probably compete with RX480? We'll have to wait and see. It probably will be built for 1080p.

If the 1050's built for 1080p, I don't think 1080p games on that card would likely cross the 4GB VRAM buffer. In most cases at 1080p, you probably won't even hit the 4GB VRAM wall. I have come close to the 4GB wall of VRAM-eating on 4GB version of 960 w/ Far Cry 4 + Batman AK - but never past it; knock on wood. I am doubting 1050 will be very capable at 1440p - maybe some will run well and some won't? [shrug]

Who knows; we'll have to wait + see when the benchmarks come out on 1050 Ti. You never know. [shrug]

For longevity + future-proofing and you don't mind spending more $$ - personally, I think the 6GB 1060; 8GB 1070; or 8GB 1080 might be the way to go here.
Personally, I'd skip the 3GB 1060 version - might as well spend the extra $50 or so for the 6GB 1060 to future-proof it w/ more VRAM, if you're going in 1060-Ville.
I think 6GB 1060 and 8GB 1070/1080 would be fine, if you're aiming for 1440p or maybe some games in the 4K arena (2160p). At 1080p, you'll have no problems w/ any of those cards - check the benchmarks.
For best "bang for buck" right now - I'd say 6GB 1060 or 8GB 1070 in the Nvidia club. 8GB 1080's overpriced at $600-700, IMHO.

EDIT:
About VRAM usage on some cards, this could give us an idea of how some of these games + resolutions/settings currently + will stack-up:

Idol you can't go wrong with the 1060GTX 6GB. Will love you long time.

On the opposite side of the fence, the RX480 isn't bad either.

Just to respond to my earlier comment.. the RX480 isn't nearly as powerful as the 1080 (falls a bit below the 1060) and is pricier than the $200 said earlier.

If you're going 1060, go with the 6GB version of 1060. For the extra $50, that 6GB buffer will likely last longer than the 3GB version. For the small amount of additional money, might as well go for that extra 3GB. Might as well future-proof it, since you're heading into 1000-series - which seems to not break a sweat at 1080p and does well in most cases at 1440p.

My old 4GB 960 has had a few games at 1080p get close to the 4GB VRAM wall like Batman AK and I've had others easily pass 3GB VRAM usage like Watch Dogs & ACU:

Eurogamer / Digital Foundry review the 4GB GTX 1050 Ti.

Pretty much, they say:
Costs around $140 USD for MSRP.
Performs similar to the 960 cards, which makes it fine for 1080p gaming.
Out-performs overclocked 4GB RX 460 models.
There's nothing like it b/c it's quite small.
Nothing like it b/c only uses up 75W at stock from a PCI-E mobo alone.
For system totals, it was drawing around 164W (regular) and 167W (OC Edition).
The two above statement mean that most mobo's + PSU's can actually handle this card!
The three above statements make it ideal for lower-end desktops + on-the-go gaming!
There is overclocking room (which Eurogamer / Digital Foundry has yet to try it, but they will).
1050 Ti has more VRAM (4GB) than the 3GB 1060.
35% more cash-spending on 3GB 1060 performs about 60% better.
If you spend a bit more $, you still can get much better cards.

Usually, these things are iterative, with 10% to 20% increase per generation.
Maybe we get lucky and get 30% increase per generation.

This looks to be an insane jump, TBH.

$1,200 MSRP.  How do you justify that?

In a market w/ part shortages, price gouging, scalpers scalping GPU's for way higher on Ebay, crytocurrency-mining, etc etc - I'm sure some can justify paying these crazy prices. ;)

I certainly wouldn't.

Took me a while to give in and drop $400 on a damn 3070...and that was on sale ($100 off that day) with it being inside a PC from buying a new pre-built PC (with the specs I specified, custom-style).

No regrets on that 3070 PC, BTW; it rocks.
