Yakuza 0
« on: Monday, February 06, 2017, 08:11:05 AM »
So I had never played a Yakuza title before, but I picked this up and I have to say it's one of my favorite games I've played in quite some time. The mixture of bizarre mini-games (Karaoke, fishing, watching video porn), the beat-em style gameplay and the intricate, fascinating story is a really messy and fantastic mix of styles that really won me over. It at times feels like Shenmue and Shenmue II, games I was a very big fan of despite their limitations. The fighting styles that can be learned and developed I think makes it much more successful than Shenmue on a gameplay level and still has the beautifully mundane sense of place those games achieved. I'm also very impressed with the fictionalized re-creation of Shinjuku and Kabukicho... while not 100% exact, the layouts and areas are so similar to the real thing, it was fun going into virtual versions of real convenience stores that I had actually been in on my trip to Japan.

I'm really glad this title made it's way over here, it definitely brought me back to the feelings I had for many Dreamcast games back in 2000 – something that feels very specific to the console market and not afraid to be weird.

Oh man, you are officially best friends with Idol and I.  And perhaps made a mortal enemy in Pyromenace.

I've played through 1-5.  Neglected to try Dead Souls.  I intended to buy 0 at launch but life circumstances deemed otherwise.

You're right, though.  The cities, like in GTA, are very much a character themselves.

I'm just so happy to find a game that pushes forward the beat em up and adventure gaming. I am so tired of all of these AAA titles that are too polished... I like a good fun mess. Please  give me more side quests of teaching Japanese punk rockers hard to be hard, or finding stolen game cartridges for little kids.

Pyro dislikes fun. And Japanese people, probably.

I ended up picking this up but have yet to play it since I ended up spending more time with Let It Die than I thought I would.  I want to jump into it but its been a heavy release schedule of games these last couple of months.  Looking forward to punching dudes in the face and playing Space Harrier.

I played after work last night... I am sucked in. Time passed so quickly and then I realized it was already 11 PM and I needed to go to bed. Help me!

Ender, if you have the means, once you're done with 0 you might find it worth your time to go back and play AT LEAST 4 and 5.  Of course I recommend playing them all if you can get your hands on them.  Most come with recaps of the previous games, but it's not the same as experiencing them.  Unfortunately the first two have skyrocketed in price stateside, and honestly they're probably hard to go back to.

They remade the first game and it's slated to get a release here later in the year, though.

Unfortunately my PS3 doesn't work anymore and I sold my PS2. I'll definitely play that remake for PS4 when it comes out though!

You must at least youtube and savor the theme song to Yakuza 4.

So a friend at work hooked me up with a bunch of Yakuza 0 posters (at least 10-12 of them).  Its basically a poster of the cover of the game.  If anyone wants one or more let me know via private message where to send it and I'll try to get them sent before I go out of town on the 12th.
