'Web 2.0' is thrown around way too much
« on: Tuesday, February 27, 2007, 12:44:18 AM »
But there are two sites that I think truly deserve it.  Sadly, both are still in development, but if all goes through as planned they will be awesome.

The first is Photosynth by Microsoft.  Basically flickr, but displaying images in pseudo 3D.  If it works as planned it could be awesome.  Try the tech demo out.

The second is up and running, but needs quite a few improvements. Yahoo Pipes basically lets you wire together a bunch of feeds and modify exactly how they interact with each other.  An interesting idea with some very interesting results.  People have come out with a lot of cool stuff, but I can think of some really useful things coming out in the future out of this. I strongly recommend you check it out.

I have no idea what Web 2.0 is meant to be, and what's the MS site trying to install exactly?

Photosynth tries to install Visual C++ Runtime and Windows Imaging Component installer. You can download and install them manually.

I think the auto-install only works properly with IE.

My fourth year engineering project is a Web 2.0 message board, driven completely by AJAX and stuff.

Yep, just tested it.. Though I had to manually install the Visual C++ runtime.. It's pretty sweet. I can see its potential. We'd be able to make some pretty artistic photo albums :P

I can imagine, though, that PhotoSynth would require more angles and such than most people could be bothered with. Pretty cool tech, though.
