I have this game, still haven't played it. I played through the first dungeon a few weeks ago, but wanted to finish some other games before really digging in. No idea when I'll get back to it. I did like what I played though.Read the earlier posts, you'll see my embarrassing attempts to enjoy the game. I'm still gonna give it another go just to try to recoup the cost! haha
I thought there wasn't a coop mode like it's just someone randomly jumping into your world and whether or not he cooperates is up to him. But can you specifically invite a friend to play with you?
My jolly cooperation remark is something one of the NPCs says in the game. There is no true co-op mode and you can't invite friends.Dang it. You had my hopes up for a sec.
Mr Miracles friends showed up and he says hes going to leave soon so I'm thinking now would be a good time to go grind up some souls and buy all the miracles he sells so I don't miss out later. I havent used any yet...maybe I should?
I was meaning the ones on the path up from Firelink to the Burg. They came back, but then maybe that was because I killed a boss?
And yeah I just found out about the graveyard skeletons. Though some of them seemed to die? At least they didn't come back. Thats when I took a little walk into the Catacombs and the first skeleton jumped me. Killed him...hmm, no souls? Thats....wait WTF NO! I then got out of there and he didnt seem to want to follow me into the sunlight. So then I went and grabbed the greatsword treasure in the graveyard which woke up 3 skeletons including one that was like 3 times larger than the rest so I got the fuck out of there as fast as I could. The ones I killed earlier seemed to stay dead, though.
When I loaded up my game I got worried for a bit. I went to Mr Miracle and his friends were gone...and so was he! Fuck! Now I missed out on those miracles! So I thought. I went to go see the Burg blacksmith to buy the smithing boxes. I haven't upgraded any of my swords or armor yet because I don't know how hard to find those ores are. I don't have many and don't want to waste them. Then I went and toyed with that limping lightning demon. I thought I could take him but it would take a really long time so I gave up on that. Anyway, when I got back to Firelink Mr Miracle was back so I'm happy. He's all worried about that chick though.
Oh and something weird happened. I talked to the crazy guy in FL and he said the crow had taken somebody. I thought it was just something he would say, but when I was going to the graveyard I could hear something like someone snoring. I looked all over and couldn't find the source of it. Really odd.
I spent most of last night trying to beat bosses I was in no way prepared to face: Havel the rock and that blasted red dragon. Havel's probably doable, but since he one-hits you there's no room for error. The dragon, not so much. I don't want to cheese him since that's essentially what I did in Demon's souls.
I have also cleared out every knight that I've encountered so far. Well, besides the ones in the Asylum.
I dunno, fuck. I hope that was scripted. The fire is out at the shrine too so I had to go all the way to blacksmith to save.
......so I may hit the catacombs......
What the fuck, man? I was really looking forward to the stories resulting from that trip. haha
Is it just me, or do you guys find arrows to be the solution to like... everything? hahaArrows are extremely useful, you need to give them a shot (pun). The game won't cut you any breaks so if I can get in there and do something safely with arrows, then why not?
For all you Dark Souls fans...
GameTrailers -> Their Top 10 Dark "Trolls". (http://www.gametrailers.com/videos/juh7kn/gt-countdown-top-10-dark-trolls)
TO ANYONE PLAYING THE GAME, THAT VIDEO HAS SOME SPOILERS FOR SOME OF THE BOSSES AND LATER AREAS IN THE GAME.
It is, but that's because K and Idol are detailing their experiences. They still haven't gone through the game, though, so while they're warning everyone else about all the spoilers they're posting, I'm sure they don't want any themselves.I got cha! Makes more sense now.
I got cha! Makes more sense now.You are not alone. I'm trying it, getting further than I did with the PS3 version, although that was just a loathsome experience.
I still ain't finished Dark Souls: PTD (PC) either...
This game...I just suck at it.
{Shrug}
No pausing isn't so bad. Most enemies dont roam and if they do you have to be in their "zone" before they will start. So you can backtrack a little bit and just stand there and nothing will bother you.Yeah, that's what I'm resorting to. The problem is there's always stuff going on around the house and when I start combat I am quite often interrupted by something or someone, being able to pause at a moment's notice is a welcome luxury.
Gotta admit, Dragon's Dogma is still trumping this. Both games can be repetitious and unforgiving, there's just something nicer about Dragon's Dogma. At least Dark Souls got a freaking PC port...
At least Dark Souls got a freaking PC port...Yeah, that's true. I don't know why Capcom keep making weird porting decisions. They'll port DmC, Street Fighter, Street Fighter X Tekken, Lost Planet, Resident Evil, and even Bionic Commando but not Dragon's Dogma. Weird.
Btw, what good does Reverse Hollowing do besides make me look human?
When you are human you have more HP, you can kindle bonfires with Humanity to get more Estus Flasks, summon other players and NPCs into boss battles, and invade other players and be invaded yourself.Ah ok.. Not sure if I skipped that notification.. I thought it was just cosmetic. Also I have to kindle bonfires? I thought they were just always lit!
Yeah, I was confused why it would sometimes give me 10 flasks and sometimes 5.
I think my biggest gripe so far is that I don't understand the game! It doesn't explain anything about its mechanics other than how to use the equipment menu!I would think a crucial element such as Humanity would have warranted a thorough explanation! All the game tells me is this vague description "This black sprite is called humanity, but little is known about its true nature. If the soul is the source of all life, then what distinguishes the humanity we hold within ourselves?" Just a philosophical quandary. It says nothing about what it does or what its used for within the context of the game.
I think I'm struggling with Dark Souls because I crave structure. Without some form of direction I'm just inclined to sit around the campfire and do nothing. All I'm told is that I'm a newly risen undead, apparently, and I have to do something... No idea what... Am I supposed to escape? Defeat a great villain? Other than having been carried over by an awesome giant crow I really have no idea why I'm there or where I ought to be going.. I just move where I can when I can despite the odds being stacked heavily against me. I think I'll just keep killing the nearby undead then respawning them and killing them over and over until I'm stronger.
OK, Anor Londo is outclassing me big time. Currently I am not good enough with my parry/riposte to make short work of the silver knights. It's getting a little frustrating. I tried Smough and Ornstein probably ten times last night, and never even got close. I tried summoning but no one took me up on it.
This is much more frustrating than the Capra Demon. At the very least I was able to almost kill him a few times. I haven't even managed to get one of these guys down to half health. You can't even concentrate on hitting one guy for more than a second or two, because the other one will pwn you for it.
So I'm back in darkroot farming souls to level up. I think I went a little bit too endurance heavy on my build, so I'm going to farm a few points into vitality, maybe a few in dex. I'm reluctant to put any points into any sort of "magic" school because I just don't use it.
I remember Pug making the same kinds of statements as you about Morrowind, but for different reasons. It all boils down to "I'm not being told where to go so how do I know where to go?" or "I'm not being told how to use something so how do I know how to use it?" I absolutely cannot understand this line of thought and have the potential to get really unkind when people use it, so... that's my two cents and I'll stop there.
I'm fully into this now. Like, I can't stop. I did initially have a bit of a hard time getting into it, but damn...it's pretty amazing.
I guess I'll be posting in this thread as well...
If I bump up endurance high enough will I get faster with heavier armour, or is that not how it works?
You may not want to bother with it right now, but that glowing door will be worth your time to unlock sooner than later. It's a fairly excellent early-game soul farming point.

You seem to be having an easier time with the game than I am gpw. Though I've only put in 2 big play sessions so far in like a week and a half. I'm playing as a thief right now and I'm up to the bell gargoyles which feel like they are impossible to kill it seems. But after doing some wiki reading on the game I'm finding that my issues are that I'm playing a thief which I'm not playing very well at and some other stuff I didn't know about like the humanity system. So I decided I'm going to restart as a bandit which feels right up my alley (it's pretty much how I'm playing the thief), 100% defense from the shield sounds so good to me. Plus since I've practically memorized the first areas that I'm up to, I should be able to regain where I was at pretty quickly.

and i was trying to get good at golf.
ur meen
I recall hearing from people that this game is always fair, and you always know what you did wrong when you die. I disagree. Ok that's mostly true, but I've had a few deaths that I would definitely blame on wonky controls or the game just not giving you a chance to see what's coming.
-The ball coming down the stairs in the Asylum. There's almost no way to see this coming. You just take some damage though, so it's not a big deal.
. . . [snip, for no spoilers for me!]
Getting used to the weird button mapping seems to be most of the early battle. I so want to fight with the face buttons.
. . .
I just had my first invasion. I was wandering around the underside of the bridge where the big red drake is, and saw a sign or two saying I needed life, or maybe it actually said humanity. So I reversed my hollowing and went back, and got the message I had been invaded. The guy came down the stairs and I prepared to have my shit pushed in, but I wasn't going down without a fight. The guy waved and me and then dropped a shitload of items for me, then tried to lead me past the drake, and opened some gate for me (to the bonfire? not sure). He gave me:
Elite Knight Helm +6
Elite Knight Armor +6
Elite Knight Gauntlets +6
Elite Knight Leggings +6
Longsword +7
Reinforced Club +7
Dragon Crest Shield +4
Cloranthy ring
Havel's Ring
Ring of Steel Protection
Old Witch's Ring
Ring of Favor and Protection
a bunch of Titanite shards, chunks, slabs, and some dragon scales
some Sunlight Medals
some Blooming Purpe Moss
some Divine Blessings
some Souls of Sif
some Souls of Manus
some Souls of Gwyn
some Humanity
some Rubbish
a Darksign (did I have that already?)
I... think that's all of it?
This shit will break the game for me (make it super easy), won't it?
EDIT: Yup, this stuff is too much.
. . .
There should be a button to press when in the shop to view an items stats. At the bottom you should see rating like A, B, C that tells you how well something scales with a certain stat. Just like school, A is better than C.
After Taurus.
Leveling up and such helps but black knights are just bastards in general. That one is tricky because of the confined space he is in, making it harder for you to dodge. You can make it a bit easier by clearing out the area before you get to him and kite him back to the courtyard where you have some room.
I used the plunging attack to kill him. There's a ladder leading up to the top of the tower you come out of. I killed the 2 archers up there first, then ran up there when Taurus came out, and jumped down on him. Then I ran away a bit, then ran past him and went back up there. It probably helps that I'm wearing fairly light armor and have decent speed.
Is there a blacksmith anywhere near where I'm at? I don't necessarily need instructions to get to him, just want to know if I'm close. I'm wandering around the Undead Parish now mostly, still going back to Undead Burgh a bit to buy stuff and make attempts at that guy with the giant club down below the Taurus Demon.
I do see some spectral characters somehow jumping up to this ladder up on the wall in the room with the bonfire. My jumps don't even go halfway high enough for that.
That's actually a shortcut you will open up after you defeat the Taurus Demon so you can easily access the bonfire again from further in Undead Burg.
W7, I want to say there's another way to approach the tower shield dude's area, but I honestly forget. It's been too long, I can't remember quite how all of that area connects together. But that's pretty much what you're going to have to deal with. Club dude is going to be someone you probably take out later in the game a bit. Lightning dude is someone you'll deal with before long.
I haven't played in a couple days. I found the blacksmith and had to stop and grind out a bunch of souls to do some upgrades. I feel them when up against weak enemies, but against tougher enemies it feels like they make no difference. Maybe I need to grind out some levels? I'm not happy about the idea of stopping and clearing the same area over and over so I can level up and make more progress. I like it the game, but progress is just so slow when I'm repeating the same areas over and over for souls (not because I'm dying), I start to get bored and think of other games I could be spending my time on.
The death of that merchant is probably hurting you a lot. I farmed that area and bought like 50 firebombs from him, a bow, and like 500 arrows, as well as the key and repair item. The firebomb guys near the bonfire are super easy with a bow.
I can see why the tedium of clearing an area would turn someone off to this game. It's not bad the first few times, but now clearing Undead Burgh super tedious. I can 1-2 shot all the enemies, but I have to treat them all like a serious threat or I get owned. Then if I want to level up I have to clear an area repeatedly, resetting the enemies at the bonfire because there's just not enough of them to get the souls to level up even once. I like the combat, and the difficulty doesn't bother me in most situations, but there's a certain tedious nature to a lot of what you're doing that can drag it down.
There's nothing here any more tedious than any other RPG, and considerably less than most. Or so I thought, at least.
I'm confused as to why you're having to grind so much. What's your soul level and stats? You really shouldn't have to grind in that area of the game at all.
Second on the Witcher being poorly paced. The swamp area was such a drowner.FTFY
This article (http://www.giantbomb.com/articles/learning-to-praise-the-sun/1100-4858/) is rather timely.
It is also rather vague. I can sit here and come up with slippery platitudes about lots of things. I'm glad he saw the light, and ended up enjoying the experience. All the testimonials do convince me that success is not only possible in the game, but also greatly rewarding. Too bad the article does nothing to guide me in that endeavor, or nudge me away from wrong thinking into the illuminated path. I want to read some details about this cautious avoidance of everything that jumps out and kills you.
