So, reformats are fun
« on: Thursday, October 05, 2006, 01:23:30 PM »
When they are unexpected. Like this morning when my computer refused to boot into windows and nothing I did helped.

So...yeah...there goes everything.

That sucks.  Luckily I haven't had that happen, and I've been trying to do regular backups of My Documents to another computer, though I'd still lose stuff like the digital versions of some stuff I shot with a digicam and other huge things.

I think I'm getting close to one as well.  My computer has just seemed slow lately.  Plus, other wierd things have been happining.

My wireless tray icon went missing for some reason.  Wireless Ethernet still works, so I'm not too worried about it.  For about a week, sometimes my computer would lock up right after logging in, but I fixed that by restoring to the oldest restore point and then doing chkdsk /r.  Then today, I was installing SQL Server Developer Edition and something was telling me I needed admin rights.  I looked, and sure enough I'm in the Administrators group.  So I try it from the Administrator account and get the same thing.  Huh?  Then I ran the desktop cleanup wizard in the admin account and come back to my own account and most of the icons are missing, but they aren't in the unused desktop items folder.

I hope it lasts because this instance of the install isn't really all that old.  Not even one year.

That terrifies me.  I have so many school documents on my laptop..

I think I should make some backups on CD-Rs.

Thanks for the heads up!

I have so much stuff on these drives that it's hopeless to think I would back it all up.  It's not going to happen.  I do selectively back up really important stuff, and that's about it.

Luckily I had burned several DVDs of stuff earlier this year, so its not a total loss. Just...everything since this april.

And my damn bookmarks.

Did you try to reinstall Windows?  That can sometimes solve the issue and at least let you back stuff up before you actually reformat.

I don't have anything I can't afford to lose on my PC.  I backup every now and again but not often at all.

Oh, yeah, did you try a repair install by any chance?  People on Anandtech rave about that saving their lives.

It didnt work. I think this is a hardware problem. Reinstalling my mobo drivers (nforce), I get crashes. Esp when installing the audio drivers. Oddly, audio WORKS, even though the install never completed. Strange.

I can use the computer, but I'm not really trusting it right now.

EDIT

Good news, DEFCON runs.

I had to do one a couple weeks ago. For some reason my user profile decided to corrupt itself for no apparent reason. And then that in turn messed everything else up.

Well, if DEFCON runs all is well!  At least that's a game you don't have to worry about keeping save files and junk around for.

I must be lucky.  I counted.  have 7 physical drives up and running constantly.  I use them all too.  No problems from any of them.  I wonder if I should throw salt over my shoulder now, or something.

You might try getting the user hive profile cleanup service from Microsoft.  It's supposed to help prevent that from happening.

My old harddrive randomly decided to fail on my computer before this one. 4 years of stuff, gone. In retrospect, I probably should have backed some stuff up, the computer was pretty old.

I'm not too upset about the stuff I lost. I had been good about backups, but those pictures just kill me.

Don't you have the better ones still uploaded somewhere?  I know they'd be lossy jpegs way down in res, but at least it's something.   :(

Yeah, they are still there. But thats very few compared to what I had. And I wanted to print them for the fair next year. Cant really make 8x10s out of em...heh.

I'm going to be more diligent with my pictures now. My dad recently bought an external HD. I'm going to have him get one for me and all my pictures will go on it automatically. And do be doublly sure I'll burn DVDs of them every so often.
