World chessboxing champ crowned

A German policeman has been crowned world champion of the hybrid sport of chessboxing.

Bouts are composed of a maximum of 11 alternating rounds of chess and boxing, reports the Daily Telegraph.

After parrying American David 'Double D' Depto's punches, Frank Stoldt clinched the light-heavyweight title with a checkmate in the seventh round.

The match was fought in front of 1,200 raucous fans in Berlin in what is being touted as the ultimate in physical and mental combat.

The bout was organised by the World Chess Boxing Organisation which has the slogan: "Fighting is done in the ring and wars are waged on the board."

The rules of the game are simple. Checkmates or knock-outs result in instant victory. Fighters also triumph if the boxing match is stopped by the referee, or if their opponent times-out at the chess board.

If there is no winner after 11 rounds of punching and castling, victory is awarded to the fighter with the most points in the boxing ring.

The sport has already developed a strong following in central and eastern Europe, and the WCBO plans to expand its appeal next year with exhibition events in Los Angeles, Paris, Prague, Zurich and Moscow.

Haha, what the hell? At least it sounds more interesting than curling.

My dad had a business client over for dinner about 10 years ago and he was from god knows what country (European I think) and the man went on for literally and hour and a half about curling. And he was excited about it. I've never been less enthralled about a sport in my life, and I love sports.

Why do Canadians love curling? Seriously.

Do not badmouth curling. You can play it while drinking beer, and you get to yell "SWEEEEEP!" at people.

Have you really played curling? If so, don't tell me you were one of the broom bitches.

No, I havent. But some of my family does, so I know a little bit about it. You go and drink and slide big heavy rocks on some ice. Whats not to love?

I suppose that I could see the appeal. Mostly because of the drinking, though.

My family plays bocce, although we play in our yard, not in the sand pits. Ball in one hand, beer in the other. Good times.

This is the dumbest sport I have ever heard of.  It would be cool if you had to box every time you took a piece, and then the outcome determined which piece was lost.  *That* I would watch.

1200 people went to see that?  I'm surprised that even one person went.

Don't talk to Canadians about loving fucked up sports or pastimes when you come from a country whose main obsessions are cricket, field hockey, and that fucked up kite thing.

Curling is the Canadian NASCAR... nobody from either country understands why the other finds the activity appealing or interesting... All I can say is that if you've never tried curling you can't comment on it because it's fun as hell and extremely challenging... in bed.

He didn't... it was a case of trafficking in humans... A pimp got him all strung out on smack then shipped him off to become the tranny he is today.
