Sometime last night the domain name "overwritten.net" expired. I'm trying to contact Ant to see whats up since he was the one that registered it. In the mean time with the help of cools we have altered some stuff so we can still use the forums.
Temporary URL is: http://datalus.montecarlohosting.net/~owgames/forum/index.php
So tell all the regular crew if they ask since they wont automatically be brought here. Hopefully we can get this sorted quickly and get the domain back.
-
Looks like I'm getting properly routed here. Wheeeee.
-
I have a website so I created some forums on it:
http://www.proslouch.com/forums/
If for some reason this place goes we can use that as a temp. host.
Anyway, I hope we can get the OW thing sorted out.
I had no idea about this link till Idol PM'ed me on facebook.
-
I am glad you got routed Shock. I wasn't. : (
-
Damn Pug, look at you being all prepared. We do still sometimes revert to TME when this goes down: http://s7.invisionfree.com/The_Minds_Eye
-
Yeah TME is always where I go when there are problems here, but I don't think that is the case for a lot of people. Hopefully this can all get sorted out soon. Let me know if I can help in any way.
-
haha! So that was it. For some reason I thought the the minds eye was on gamers.com. I lost my bookmarks a while back, so for some reason it was gamer.com on my mind.
I will bookmark it when I get back home.
Not really prepared though. I bought proslouch a few years ago and this was the first time I logged in. I created the message boards after I realized OW was down.
It was surprisingly easy. All I had to do was use the webhost tools and it was a matter of minutes.
Anyway, let's see if we can get OW back up soon. I think it would cost about $60 or whatever to renew the package, so if Antares is unable (which is understandable), let's see if we can find other people to pitch in.
BTW, I posted a link to this temp. home on the proslouch forums so if anyone ends up going there after reading my e-mail, they can find their way here.

I'm going to contribute - whoever is responsible, shoot me a PM once you figure everything out.
-
Yeah, I'm down. What are we talking about monthly/quarterly/whatever?
-
No sweat, guys, I've got it covered.
-
Thanks for the heads up, Pug.
-
Reading through my IRC log, I noticed idol, cools and que (and perhaps others?) worked diligently last night to restore OW to a usable state under this temporary url. Before that, navigating here involved grabbing a link, manually editing in this montecarlohosting addy, then pasting it into the address bar. No hope of logging in or posting anything either. Way to go, guys! Thanks a bunch.

So, any word on if this place will ever be Overwritten.net again? I e-mailed Antares when I noticed the problem at the e-mail address in the domain name registration (which was also the one I had in my address book), but I have heard no response. I know he's on Facebook, but I de-friended him months ago.
It wouldn't be so bad if someone could just buy overwritten.net since it's expired, but it looks like GoDaddy gives a certain amount of time for the domain name to be renewed before opening it up for sale again.
Also, anyone else notice that smilies and the quick reply doesn't work?
-
I got in contact with Ant, and we're going to see about transferring the domain to Que. Hopefully that doesn't take too long.
Uh...can't say Ive noticed the smilies or Quick Reply. But for the first I've been browsing with images off and the second I'm testing with this post. Wish me luck.
*EDIT*
Quick reply is working here.
:) :P :D
Yeah, smilies are still pointing to the wrong URL. Doh.
EDIT2
Smilies should be working now.
-
Quick reply is working here.
Doesn't work for me in Fx 3.5.5 or IE8.
I get errors in the error consoles for both. I'm assuming it will be fixed when everything reverts back to the correct URL.

I think it is pretty standard for them to allow a month before putting it up for sale.
I am pretty sure Antares doesn't realize the domain has expired though.
-
He's already been notified and he got in touch with me. I'm waiting for a response from him now. It's been a couple days.
-
I am sure he will get in touch soon.
-
Quick reply was working for me but appears to be broken for me now.
-
Strange... it is working OK for me.. albeit a little slow.
-
Whenever I load a page, the loading bar (or whatever the hell it is called) will go almost 100%, but not show the page. When I click the link again it will load instantly. It's strange.

Same thing happens to me. It won't load, so I hit Esc (stop), and F5, and it loads. Before posting anything I select the whole thing and Ctrl-C just in case it hangs.
-
Yeah, this happens to me as well. It can occasionally take up to 2 minutes for a post to go through as well, though I've discovered this is false. If I click submit again it just loads instantly and tells me the post has already been submitted (which it has). No clue what's causing it, but it's obviously something to do with our current issues.
-
Working fine for me under Fx 3.5.5 right now, for the most part except for Quick Reply and I also noticed that the AJAX edit is gone.
Most definitely things are broken because of the domain name switch. Hopefully it gets sorted out soon. Honestly I'm surprised it's taken as long as it has. I know Ant isn't really much of a member of this community anymore, but still...
-
Its weird that these issues aren't consistent. Stuff is working completely normal here, from Quick Reply, to AJAX edit, and I'm not getting any slowness. And its not like I have some special connection or setting for the boards. Im an admin but so is Que and hes getting the problems, so that can't be it.
-
I started getting that slowness this morning and had another look around. I noticed in my statusbar that loading any page was still trying to contact the overwritten.net domain. I think it was slowing things down waiting for it to time out or something. I found it was part of the customized theme was still calling parts of the default theme, which I hadn't changed since I assumed they were self contained. Anyway, now it doesnt try contacting the dead URL and it seems to have sped things up on my end. Lemme know if its any better for you guys.
-
Quick reply is working for me again.
-
I did notice the site is loading better today. Nice find, Idol.
Any word from Ant?
-
Nothing yet. Que sent him another email the other day but no response.
-
Here at Sandy's, I tried going into the usual url, and noticed the godaddy page now says the domain is up for renewal or deletion. Yikes.
Thanks, idol. I had to do a stop and a refresh almost every time here earlier today. Your fix works like a charm.
-
Yeah, unfortunately there's little else I can do. Don't know where Ant's at, but he hasn't responded to either of my last 2 emails over the course of a bit over a week. There's really nothing else I can do except backorder the domain for whenever it expires. I was trying to give Ant the benefit of the doubt, but we're a little beyond that at this point.

I don't get it. I mean this is a guy that once tried to take it upon himself to code a portal page. His beta work was actually decent and functional. I don't think there was anything that really pissed him off and made him leave, but I guess he'd been drifting apart for years now. Still, you would think he would be a little bit more helpful in this situation. I mean it couldn't be too hard or time consuming to help Que sort this out.
-
Well someone did get in touch with him, so what did he say then?
I don't think he is pissed or anything. I am sure he hasn't found the time.
-
Yeah, he doesn't seem mad or anything. He just doesn't have any interest in continuing.
-

No, that's not my point. I was trying to state that I don't get why it's taking so long, especially when he doesn't hold a grudge.
-
Oh, I agree. I was just sorta going off pugs post.
-
I'm interested to know what Ant has said. Is it confidential or something? You guys aren't saying.
-
The response I got is basically what I said. The email in its entirety:
I got a message from godaddy somehow the auto renewal didn't go through properly. If someone wants to take the domain I have no interest in it anymore.
And according to Que the only email he got was "I hear you're taking it over?" or something to that effect.
-
Geez. I just lot a lot of respect I once had for the guy. He certainly could be a lot more forthcoming.
So is the domain back-ordered like Que said?
-
Wait, what the fuck? I think we have it back. I just tried my bookmark and it worked.
-
Yeah, it's back. I just tried it as well.
Alright, I guess you can go and fix all that temporary stuff you did. I suggest restoring all the files from a backup except the database. You'll have to change stuff in there manually with phpMyAdmin.
-
Ohh, hai
-
hai guys
-
Hai.
Ok, I think I've reversed all the changes I made. If you see something not working right, lemme know.
-
Yep, looks good.
-
Oh HEY! Look at that. overwritten.net/it's back! So, what's the rest of the story? Ant got on it on his own, or . . .
-
I don't currently know. As far as I know Que is still at work so perhaps Ant picked it up and will transfer it over.
-
Haven't come onto the computer until just now, and still no message from Ant. So I have absolutely no idea what happened or why. I'll try to email him again and see what's up.
-
hmmm... seeing a lot of times new roman - what's up with that?
-
It's an early Christmas miracle!
-
Oh man, I had a scare! I was gone a week and BAM, OWnet is out! I freaked! Thank God you're all back :)
Btw, I'm sorry I've been away so long. I am in Lebanon right now and internet here is scarce. In fact, running electricity is miraculous right now. Rolling blackouts is the norm here, everyone has gotten into the habit of having electricity 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. then 7 p.m. to midnight. Some people have generators though, but even those can't run continously for too long.
I also realized that I have a lot to catch up on! So I'll get to it when I return to Abu Dhabi on the 13th. Until then, ciao!
-
No wonder you weren't responding on facebook.
Damn that is hardcore loading shedding!!! We have loadshedding here as well, but it is an hour in the morning and sometimes an hour at night. The generator is a good convenience to have, but you are right that it can't run for more than 4 hours.
-
Uh-huh.....why is there the blackout? It seems like weird timing for it.
-
I suspect it is because there was a crippling war in Lebanon recently.
-
And they deliberately attacked power stations.
-
Yeah, I was wondering more if it was deliberate or because of infrastructure. I find it weird because in either case, a mid-day blackout doesn't make much sense.
-
They turn it off when it is likely to be the hottest, and people are more prone to using air conditioners.
-
Air conditioners! Didn't think about that part.
-
Is there any way to time out quicker on shock's unresponsive photobucket image?
-
You should be able to adblock the image address.
-
A UPS is an absolute necessity if you live here! Since we don't have one I've been very cautious about saving doc and games at frequent intervals. I got into Fable 2 on my friend's X360, great game btw, and thank God you can save at any point you like!
This place is pretty bashed up. What's worse is that the authorities here are so disorganized and disparate that they never get anything done in a timely fashion or even at all. Living here is challenging and makes me realize how much I take for granted in other countries (electricity, internet, elevators etc.)
Still, it gave me a chance to reconnect with a part of my childhood and the incredibly beautiful nature in the rural parts. I've spent the greater portion of my vacation here in the mountains. We visited an underground grotto (Jeita), explored ruins (Roman, Phoenician and earlier), and scaled a few grizzly mountainsides. I'll make a thread with photos as soon as I get back!
All in all, I'm glad to be in touch with this other side of myself again. I had gotten into the habits of a sedentary lifestyle, counting on conveniences and taking way too much for granted. I think it's healthy to leap out of it from time to time.
In relation to gaming: my disdain for digital distribution is renewed!
-
You're on vacation? You bastard.
-
Nice to have you back Xessive, Ive been wondering where youve been too since me, you, and Pugnate are the main Dragon Age guys I like to talk to. But your hiking trips sound awesome, I would love to do that and see that stuff.
-
Hey all! I am in the Kuwait airport right now. Luckily, they have free internet access here.
Thanks Pyro, I will be back in the groove soon!
-
Welcome back, X! :)
-
Alas, I have arrived at my humble home in Abu Dhabi.
I will be regulating my rounds on OWnet now ;D
