Dick in a box
« on: Monday, December 18, 2006, 05:59:26 AM »
Anyone watch SNL this past week with Justin Timberlake?  He and some other guy did this fake music video called "Dick in a box" that was freaking hilarious.

Another funny YouTube video which I just discovered courtesy of Wired magazine was "Boom goes the dynamite."  I imagine many of you have probably already seen it but it's decent.  It's basically the worst sports caster in the history of mankind.  I love near the beginning when he goes, "Oh no."

I love watching the second video when I am feeling shitty about myself.

My favorite parts

1.  Like 40 seconds in when he just goes silent for 20 seconds during the baseball highlights.
2. "Reggie Miller's looking good"
3. "Later, he gets the rebound.  Passes it to the man, shoots it, boom goes the dynamite!"
4. "Leading vote getting receiving 61 first place"
5. "Thanks a lot for that look at sports Brian." ".. yeah"

Suck it, Pugnate.

For you maybe. Oooo, burn.

Megan found this last night. We watched it like 3 times. Laughed our asses off. I really don't want to like Justin Timberlake, but he does get a couple "cool points" for that. Funny shit.

I'll admit, I like Justin Timberlake.  Not so much his music, but just his charisma.  He's a talented and funny individual.  I have to respect that.

His talent is in question for most of us.  The video is pretty funny, but I still kind of wish the guy would just go away.  Something about people who are willing to fall into the shit music industry and then quit and make fun of it just don't really have my respect.  Should have just done something real with your life in the first place.

And that second video is painful to watch.  I like when he just gives up and stops for a while.  It's really lame that something like that is on the internet, though.  Nobody should have to remember shit like that and have the world continue laughing about it for ages.

I can't say I really fault the guy, he is a genuinely talented singer and dancer and he has managed to use that talent to become very successful.  I'm not much for his music but I'm not exactly the target audience either.

Gotta give credit to the kid for staying the entire time and not just storming off the set.  I mean, I think the teleprompter screwed something up, or the director, or he forgot his glasses or something, and then combine in the fact that he was nervous.

Yeah, I'd say the kid had balls.  I'd probably have just up and left.

Again, I said something real.  Women and money are passing fads and I pity anyone that lives for either.

Different strokes. Women and money may be passing fads, but to say that fad isn't worth pursuing because it's not the end goal seems a bit short-sighted.

I have nothing but respect for the guy, he became a success doing what he's good at, and seemingly wants to do.

Also, Dick in a box is catchy.  :(

If this is the same video that I am thinking of, then that sportscaster kid came on Leno. He said the 'boom goes the dynamite' phrase was something he had come up with with his friend. He said he panicked and blurted it out. Soon it became a bit of a fad, and all sorts of pros were using the phrase on TV without realizing its stupid origins.

But yea that first vid. is one of the funniest things I've seen in years.

That Dick in a Box video is fucking hilarious, and Justin Timberlake may be a tool, but he did everything I would have done if I had the same opportunity.  Tool or not, he's more successful than any of us and thats certainly respectable.  Also, the idea that anybody doesn't live for money is ridiculous.  Money is awesome.  Money is better than anybody makes it out to be, and damnit, money DOES equal happiness.

See, I think of it as "money can help pave the way to happiness." If all you had was money, and you couldn't do anything with it you'd be pretty damn bored.

Money can't substitute your inherent nature either. If you're a miserable bastard, you're gonna be miserable whether you're rich or poor. Equally if you're naturally optimistic or "happy-go-lucky" that's how you'll be in either state. This is all of course assuming neither condition has any truly depressing circumstances like "I got rich coz my brother died" or "Fuck, I'm dirt poor and I'll lose my house because of it!"

Money can just make it easier for you to acquire certain materials which may be used to aid you or ease the journey on the road to happiness.

Honestly, I hated N'Sync.. But the first time I saw Justin Timberlake on SNL, I respected his attitude and general charisma. The guy seems genuinely fun-loving.

I hate money more than I hate anything else in the universe.  "Oh look!  I have a paper strip and/or a shiny piece of rock that somebody pulled out of the ground.  I think I should arbitrarily decide that this has value and then spend the rest of my time on earth trying to get more of it so the other idiots around me can barter with me for it!  Who needs a craft?  Who needs real skill?  Who needs to learn anything worthwhile?  I don't need shit because I have shiny rocks!"  Fuck money, fuck business, fuck career, and fuck society while you're at it.

Y'know I wouldn't be surprised if that's how the concept of money first came around :P It was the one no-talent, lazy-ass mofo in the village who figured out a way to convince everyone else that the shiny rocks he stumbled on were more valuable than everything else.

Dude I'd totally do that! Well, I already lived in a village once before. We basically lived in the standard bartering system for the most part. Our neighbour had the cows, so he took care of milk for the village, we had pine trees and general agricultural produce. It was the simple life. We didn't have electricity either.

Actually there was a general store, he was the only guy who needed money to get stuff from the city. We only really got little things from his shop, like batteries or the occasional soda.. Sometimes we got fireworks, although we mostly just made those.

I can see myself being a farmer or a fisherman. It's hard work, but at least it's all in the work, no political stress or any bullshit like that.

Sure it is.  I've never farmed a day in my fucking life.  I was born into this.

And anyway, you're missing my point.  I never said I didn't like having stuff, I said I don't like money.  I don't like how I have to sell my soul just to scrape by.  How I spend every day at a job I hate more than anything else, wasting away just to make a buck.  I hate how my wife can't work and hence we're in the red every single month because it's impossibly expensive around here.  I hate how she's crying all the time over the fact that the government doesn't consider her fucked up enough to get on disability and our appeal isn't looking good.  I hate money.  Money is probably the worst thing that's ever happened to me.  I'm at least marginally good at a lot of little things, and I'm a lot better at some of it than many people, but that doesn't matter to the people who pay you for things.  No, they pay you to do worthless crap that means nothing to anyone, not to do the things that inspire you and those around you.  No, that has no monetary value whatsoever.  Sure, we can give millions of dollars to stupid motherfuckers you can toss a fucking ball to each other, but great artists who all but emotionally abuse themselves to create the things that drive the human race?  The world thinks they should go suck donkey balls and die.  Where the hell is the justice in that shit?  I'm not even saying I'm really good at that stuff anyway... I'm just saying if I'm going to be making a pittance, why can't I be making it doing something I love instead of something I hate?

It seems to me that what you hate is the distribution of wealth, not wealth itself.  (I'm with you on making millionaires out of men playing games with a ball.)  I see money as a means to an end, not an end in itself.  Money is to be spent on worthwhile things, causes, and pursuits.  One of the 3 things our country is supposed to guarantee is the freedom to pursue happiness.  Given the capitalist system, money is a prerequisite, no?  Sure, you can pursue butterflies with a net, if that's happiness for you.  Most of us want the dream, though--spouse, family, comfort, nice things.  That's what we work for.  Money is just the go-between.

That's the idea of economy though.  If you don't think pro sports players should get that much money then don't buy a ticket.  They make that money because they generate it, and the most you can do is choose not to support it.

Short but killer, Ghandi.  Nice post.

So what's the alternative?  What's been tried so far has been a disaster for the common folk, and only benefited an elite few in power.  (Communism is supposed to be about equality, but look at the real-world implementations of it.)

I'm all for some degree of socialism now.  (That's a fairly recent change in attitude.)  At the very least, we need to make it possible for family-owned businesses to compete with big corporations again.

In the end, over a large enough time period in a large enough society, all of the current systems will fail. Look at capitalism here in the U.S. I'm not saying that it is failing, but we are beginning to see how it can fail. In a system that is all about acquiring as much $$$ as possible, eventually someone will have enough money to make competing with them impossible. This is why family-owned business are failing. Market regulations help, but only to a degree.

I agree completely.  Most systems are equally good on paper, and most will work if you've got good people at the helm.  But all systems fail as soon as any significant degree of corruption sets in, and people are corrupt, so you can guarantee that all systems will fail eventually.

People tend to say it as "Money is the root of all evil," when it's actually "The love of money is the root of all evil."

And an old teacher of mine used to love going around asking how many people went to public school and how many people were on financial aid and whatnot, then he'd proceed to call them all communists.  I always thought that was funny.

I have the perfect plan to get rid of money.

Everything is free!

See, then everyone can get jobs doing stuff. A craft or trade. If you work, you get stuff free! Except those people that don't work, they get nothing. So I suppose you'll need some way to tell them apart. Hmmmm...a license or some sort of certificate that say you worked. And it should be tiered, because otherwise no one would do the shitty jobs. It should also be based on time...dont want those lazy fuckers working 10 minutes to get stuff!

So we'd have a bunch of certificates that we would hand out to workers that would correspond with how long they worked at a particular job. You can trade these in for items! Free!

Wait....FUCK!
