Title: What I'd like to see in Borderlands 2
Post by: idolminds on Saturday, January 02, 2010, 01:18:43 AM
Other than networking that works consistently and a more PC-centric UI for the PC version. Just some thoughts I had.

1) Armor: Come on, you know you want to see new armors that change your characters look for co-op.

2) Crafting: I'd like to see enemies drop crafting material. Like parts of armors and guns. Then you could either take them to a gunsmith or armor smith to have something made, or you might be able to do it yourself (which would also level up that ability...the better you are, the better the gun/armor). Taking a cue from Guild Wars, you could disassemble the weapons you find and throw the parts together. Pull off the barrel of an accurate gun to increase accuracy, or the magazine from another gun to slap into another. The better the part, the better the final outcome.

3) Environment variation: The desert is nice and all, but one can only take so much brown. Lets get some snowy areas or forest/jungles!

4) More co-op abilities: What I mean by this are abilities that can really take advantage of teamwork. What if Brick had an ability that knocked enemies down, and then Lilith had an ability that would deal extra damage to knocked down foes? Or Lilith could freeze them (with a new Ice type) and Brick could shatter? Used by the individual they would be kinda weak, but used in combo would add some depth to multiplayer.

All good suggestions.  I do worry a bit about the environments, though.  I get so sick of seeing the standard environment types in games over and over again.  Here's the jungle level... here's the underground lava river.  Here's the freezing snowfield.  I'd like to see them get more creative.  Have them delve into an ancient alien city that's been abandoned for thousands of years, or have them invade a station or world that only exists to support pirates and criminals, leaving you with a whole big fat group of dudes to blow apart in seedy bars and crazy rundown buildings that sit beneath a darkened sky.  Something more creative.

But yeah, I'd love to see all of that.  Especially the crafting.  I don't know how they missed that opportunity... but hopefully that's something they look into.  Either for an expansion or sequel.

Hmmm... you know its hard to say for me. I don't want it to go into more of a direction of a massive multiplayer game, keep it more in a scope with cooperative play in mind. I would like:

Better quests: You know, stuff better than fetch quests and the generic go-kill-this-enemy-type. Go more creative like some defend an area or multiple objective quests.

More vehicles: This would tie in with better quests. Make some vehicles that are equipped with different weapon types, flame throwers or nail guns and make more use of them in quests and most important: multi-passenger vehicles!

Better bosses: This is probably one of the weakest points of Borderlands. Make some better bosses that actually require strategy with online coop and perhaps make a single player version for solo players.

Those are the main things I can think of. I actually wouldn't like so much for a crafting system since I think it's something more for MMOs. The coop ability stuff would be awesome though, stuff like that would had another layer of tactics to the game and I could also go for some more creative environments.

1)Melee Weapons
One thing I felt was missing - especially for Brick - was the ability to have straight-up melee weapons equipped. Brick is the perfect class to be the expect w/ these skills, since he is a berserker and all - and can lay waste to people up close and personal w/ his bare hands. Let's have some baseball bats, axes, frying pans, etc - yes, it did wonders for having Melee Weapons in L4D2 and there were classes in HGL that specialized in this - BL should join the club.

2)Crafting Weapons / Disassembling Weapons For The Parts / Upgrading Weapons
I know the dev's were asked about this - and they left it out due to the fact that had insane amounts of weapons in-game. One of the best features of HGL was that you could make weapons, based on the "recipes" you find and if you have the "correct" parts. Also, you could break weapons into their pieces and do what you want w/ the parts - maybe make another well; sell the parts; give them away to another player; etc. Also, like HGL, Torchlight, and many other ARPG's - there should be socketed item slots - where I can upgrade my weapons by adding runes and gems and stuff to them if I have the socketed-item slot. Why not allow this kind of customization? Cheaters already run rampant w/ modifying the weapon game-files on ALL of the systems anyways, so let them be able to customize stuff in-game...

3)Vehicles - deeper vehicular combat / customization of vehicles / more vehicles types
Originally, BL was to have more different vehicles and a little bit more customization than what's actually in the game. Some of this incomplete code has been locked-out of the game - and people been messing w/ it. Due to time constraints and that they didn't have more time to fully-develop it, it was left on the cutting room floor. Let's expand on this, Gearbox.
Rumor is - an upcoming Borderlands DLC might be focused on vehicles entirely.

4)Improved Optional Storytelling Methods
The storytelling, dialogue, and presentation of this is by no means bad in Borderlands, when it's done - see the opening video and some of Tannis' journals. Also, see their Brothers In Arms games, too - it's extremely well-done. The thing is, they didn't want to slow Borderlands's action-game style pace down for the action players - especially in Co-Op mode - where players are always voting to skip cut-scene sequences, which a lot of players do all the time Guild Wars. It's just...I think they really could've used optional ways to convey the story more so.

Here's my thoughts - employ some optional storytelling devices. Think like a Codex system like DAO, The Witcher, or even (a voiced-one like) Mass Effect has to give the player more additional information about the game, the gameworld and its characters; more Bioshock style audio logs to pick-up in the gameworld to give the player more info (some of the best storytelling was Tannis' journal quest); and even maybe video logs for the player to pick up like in Dead Space. Hell, there could even be Achievements for players finding all these audio logs, video logs, or whatever in-game - making it even very worthwhile for MP gamers to go find all of these things in-game together - even if they don't look through them while they're playing online.

Likely, most players would NOT dive through reading, listening, and absorbing all this optional storytelling stuff during MP; they'd do it during SP mode - this would really satisfy the gamers who want more story out of their game.

I'm sure there's others things I will probably think of later, but I'll do it in another post...

I agree with pretty much everything mentioned here, especially armor. Armor slots, even if not visual, would give more depth to the upgrades instead of just "which gun do I use?" I got very picky about gun types and stats on them, and ended up paying attention to value more than stats when looting, unless it was an epic or legendary submachine gun. Even then I just looked to see if it had the dmg/accuracy/rate of fire spread I wanted.

I remember them saying somewhere they had armor sets and all of that stuff originally, but it really bogged-down the framerate - especially on the console systems. So, they removed it and did the shield system as a quick-fix.

But, yeah - I'd like to have BOTH armor and shields set-ups, in a future BL game.
That or they really gotten really deepen the shield set-up and make they upgradable and add even more stats to them.
Title: Re: What I'd like to see in Borderlands 2
Post by: W7RE on Saturday, January 02, 2010, 01:37:09 PM
I'm guessing by bogged down, they meant framerate and such due to the extra models and textures in game. While that would be really cool, I'd be happy with just more item slots. I mean in something like Diablo or Torchlight, you have several item slots (10+?), and in Borderlands it's 4 types (weapon, shield, grenade mod, and class mod). Sure you could have up to 4 weapons, but I never really focused on more than one, unless I was low on ammo. I tried to level up my sniper rifle skill, but with high accuracy SMGs and high SMG skill, I could take someone down faster with that at anything but extremely long range.

Yup - that's exactly it.
Let me find this Interview in which they stated this was the problem.

EDIT:
Found it!
It was from IGN's interview w/ Gearbox's Senior Designer Paul Hellquist and Director Matt Armstrong.  (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/105/1053701p3.html)

Quote
IGN: Did you have to trim away things that you could equip on your character? Like were there more ideas at the start, for instance armor, or something to that effect, and it just didn't work with what you were going for?

Armstrong: In the prototype we had a paper doll system. We had gloves, boots, pants, armor and a helmet because that's what those games do. Much like the random level generation, that's what those games do, so we tried that to see how it worked. The thing is, we're a first-person shooter, and I'm equipping myself on a paper doll and eating up a lot of memory and a lot of performance and a lot of time to do something that I never see and something I never really get a strong sense of the feel of.

It's not a stat game. It's not me looking at the menus, spending all my time swapping around my armor and looking at how the stats change. It's more visceral and in the world and in-combat. People were just not interested in the armor. It was kind of neat to change what your character looked like, but then you never saw yourself anyway.

We removed that stuff as a design decision as much as a performance issue because it wasn't paying off. We simplified that down to a shield and made the shields really interesting and they do different effects and different abilities, and it was much more true to the first-person shooter game that we were making. Most the decisions that were made were for design. We're very close to what our original intent for what this game should be.

I agree with Que that it doesn't have to be your typical environments, just some variation. Hell, Pandora is a planet and apparently there are ways off and on planets (TK calls you an offworlder). So why not allow the player to hop to different planets, each with its own kind of landscape and enemy critters?

I think this might be the plan w/ Borderlands 2 or Borderworlds - which is a game-title they actually have trademarked - or whatever they hell they actually decide to call the next BL game.

W/ the way the first BL game was going by the end, I think this interplanetary warfare thing could hopefully be where it's headed....

GameBanshee - BL2 info. (http://www.gamebanshee.com/news/104176-borderlands-2-info-tidbits.html)

Quote
A couple of posters on the official Gearbox forums has started to post some details from Game Informer's feature on the just-announced sequel to Borderlands, which apparently will include more dynamic quests, improved AI and all-new weapons.

-Co-op will stick to 4 players
-Different Variety of Vehicles, one being a Bandit Technical, and the article states there will be a vehicle with 4 seats.
-Eridium, can be used to enhance weapons or are the only Currency to purchase the most powerful weapons in the world
-Bearded drawf guy is Salvador, the Gunzerker. Special ability is Dual-wielding. Any weapon can be dual-wield.
-The original Vault Hunters will be support NPC's.
-Bandits now have their own brand of weaponry.
-Each manufacturer will now have their own weapon styling/color/personality.
-Weapons can have custom decals and enhancements.
-Enemies are more responsive, and actually interact with each other better.
-The players will also have interacting dialogues, similar to those in Left 4 Dead.

    (...)

    1. Enemies are going to be much more varied and ai greatly improved
    2. It looks like there will not be any new elements added(see below)
    3. There will be a new kind of element item called eridium and while it wont do damage like a typical element it will enhance things that other elements can do and also improve guns or vehicles in general, it also will be used as a form of currency
    4. Skill tree will be same traditional 3 branch system as used in first game
    5. They hinted that coop would still be only 4 players but did not outright confirm it
    6. Story missions will no longer be static, I.E. if you need to rescue somebody as a mission but take too long that story arc will continue and the story will change for you
    7. claptrap will be back in some form
    8. the 4 characters from the original will be npc's
    9. Guns manufacturers will have a unique theme for their guns
    10. There will be pickups that allow temporary buffs sort of like the cores from general knoxx.
    11. Gearbox is getting rid of all the old weapons and starting from scratch.
    12. No mention of gun customization or crafting.
    13. This game is going to be Epicly epic.

Quote
The bandits that inhabit the world of Borderlands 2 are now split into factions, which don't seem to get along very well. One enemy called the Nomad Torturer has a massive shield with a Psycho Midget tied to the front. This Midget is not very happy about his situation, and if you can shoot him free, he will start attacking the Torturer which allows you to flank him and shoot him from the sides or from behind.

I have a level 25 Hunter right now.  It's a pretty fun class, especially once you get a revolver.  Before that, it is a bit slow.

I want to try the Siren girl, mainly because I have no idea how that class would play.  At all.  In fact, I'm going to do that right now.
Title: Re: What I'd like to see in Borderlands 2
Post by: idolminds on Saturday, August 20, 2011, 07:15:56 PM
My main was a Siren. The blast thing is good to run away from fights or get some distance, but once you level it up it becomes pretty devastating. You can recharge its use by killing dudes so once you get it leveled you can use it almost continuously.
Title: Re: What I'd like to see in Borderlands 2
Post by: Cobra951 on Saturday, August 20, 2011, 08:05:34 PM
Yeah, the siren is a lot of fun.  I'm using one right now.  She's great for beginners too, because phasewalk can get her out of a lot of jams.  The hunter gets to be good after you develop him.  With the right COM and skill points, bloodwing can be sent out continuously.  He's murder with revolvers, machine pistols and repeaters.  Never much cared about his sniper skills because revolvers get accurate enough in the game to snipe with.  Keeps you from having to split up the skill points.

I just hope the scaling is done better in Borderlands 2.
Simply, it sucks in Borderlands 1 - and is my biggest complaint.

DLC should scale to my character upon moment I enter the DLC, not based on...well, see that crazy-ass chart.

I just want BL2 to be about 3 times as hard. I almost never found the first game difficult and that frustrated the hell out of me. I really loved it and had tons of fun but it was just way, way, way too easy.

The problem was with the quest XP. If you follow all the quests then you outlevel everything pretty quickly. They need to keep that in check.

That or just give us a difficulty slider that can go up high enough to make things nearly impossible. I would have been so much more motivated to find better stuff if I ever felt like I needed it. Mostly when I found a better weapon the initial rush of being able to kill everything almost instantly went away after an hour because I'd get bored. The best times I had were the very few where we were actually fighting for our lives or trying to do something way above our level and just feeling the epicness of it all.

In Playthrough 2, everything levels up with you.  [Edit:  Que, have you played the game since it was patched to make this (http://forums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=111858) happen?]  If BL2 gets any harder than the Knoxx DLC in PT2, I won't enjoy it.  I thought that was hard as nails, motivating me plenty to learn the best skill-points distributions, the best COMs, and to experiment with all sorts of weapons.  PT1, yeah, you can far outlevel the enemies if you aren't careful.  That's no fun, not only because it's too easy, but because it stalls out your character's development (XP/skill points, gun proficiencies).  Fortunately, 2 of the DLCs--Zombie Island and Robolution--level up multiple times during PT1.  They don't level up with you as in PT2, but rather jump 5 or more levels from time to time.  By keeping an eye on the mission log, you can choose when to go there and actually have a good time in PT1.

I probably have no idea what you're talking about. I don't really play games anymore. I never even finished the game on a single go-around, even though I got fairly close. I just don't have the time and I no longer give a fuck about spending that much time entertaining myself when I have so much work to do. It sort of sucks because I miss being excited about games. There's just so little I'll let myself indulge in.

Borderlands 2 to be less picky about weapon/class combos. (http://www.vg247.com/2012/02/23/borderlands-2-to-be-less-picky-about-which-weapon-you-use/)

Quote
Art director Jeramy Cooke said the first Borderlands was too restrictive in that regard.

“We sort of backpedalled on that from the first game. We found that people really just wanted to be able to use the weapons they wanted to use,” he said.

“We tried to be a little less like ‘you really want to use this type of gun,’ because inevitably someone would just take Brick and go get a sniper rifle and they just wanted to play that way. So we’ve opened the skill trees up a lot more so that people can access weapons that they want.

“Now there may be weapons that just harmonize better with certain skills but we’re not really kind of forcing that whereas like, you know, here’s a buff to this very specific class of weapon. We typically don’t do a lot of that.”

The first one is still my favorite game ever, overall.  This trailer gives me goosebumps.  I watched it several times when idol first posted, and I watched it again a few more times just now.  Great stuff.  If anyone wants to actually download this, here is a direct link (http://games.softpedia.com/progDownload/Borderlands-2-Launch-Date-Trailer-Download-105691.html).  720p MP4.

Edit:  Oh, and that pumping background music is Doomsday, by Nero (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBKlm-RX2zU).  "Doomsday"  Heh.  Appropriate.

Expected but confirmed Steamworks. (http://www.shacknews.com/article/72646/borderlands-2-pc-uses-steamworks)
Based on what Gearbox was doing with the original (later patches in add Steam achievements etc.) it was, as you said, expected.

Honestly I don't mind. I kinda prefer it, at least from the angle of the features and improved matchmaking. On consoles the proprietary services (PSN or XBOX LIVE) take care of all that stuff but on PC each dev has to come up with their own, which is apparently a common gripe of devs bringing titles to PC, so this may be much more helpful in the long run.

Doomsday-trailer deconstruct (http://www.ign.com/videos/2012/02/22/ign-rewind-theater-borderlands-2-doomsday-trailer) over at IGN.  About 16 minutes of going through the trailer freeze-frame fashion, while adding info gleaned from the video and from previous conversations with GBX.  Worthwhile if you have the time and a better PC than mine.  (Damn H.264 codec sucks with old hardware.)

To add more to the above...
Gearbox's last released game DNF required Steam.

So, yeah - BL2 PC requiring Steam was expected.

EDIT:
To add more fuel to the fire - BL: GOTY from Amazon Download Service could be optionally activated up on Steam.

So far I think Epic are the only ones to have made a game Steam-activated after release. I'm talking about Unreal Tournament III. I got the CE (non-Steam) way back, a few year's later when the game was released on Steam (around the time Epic made the huge Black Edition update) I put my retail CD code into Steam and it accepted it! A quick run through the forums revealed that it was part of Epic's surprise update to make everything work through Steam.

Oddly enough, after that Epic moved on to GFWL.

Coming back to Borderlands 2, I'm glad it's bound to Steam and not anything worse. At least Steam has a functioning set of online features.

Not odd at all for them to jump to G4WL, given the success they had w/ Gears of War X360.
And that they are pretty much buddies w/ Microsoft. :P

There's a fair amount of games that had different DRM at Retail [Non-Steam Version], but can additionally as an option be also be activated on Steam.

UT3 is obviously one, as you stated.

Sup Com: Forged Alliance can be optionally activated on Steam.
Doing so, also nets you the original Sup Com, BTW.

Dark Messiah of Might & Magic - Single Player Portion can be optionally activated on Steam.
X3: Terran Conflict, as well.
Prey is another.
Borderlands: GOTY Edition is another.

Claptrap's "love letter" to PC gamers about Borderlands 2 PC. (http://www.borderlands2.com/loveletter?x)

I'm glad there's a nice list of features for Borderlands 2 PC...
But we shouldn't even have to ask for most of this stuff that they list there, when it comes to multi-platformed games that are ALSO getting PC versions.
This stuff should ALWAYS BE A GIVEN on the PC version.

I finished up the main story on Borderlands last night (I still have a good bit of Moxxie's stuff left to do).  Ending was sort of a letdown, but I'm at least happy that I can say I got through it.

The journey was a blast though, and well worth the 20 bucks I spent on the GOTY edition during a Gamestop sale.  The concept is a great one, but Gearbox certainly needs to improve on a number of things in BL2.  More varied enemies, missions, and landscape are a must.  I like the postapocalyptic wasteland as much as anyone else, but in a game this long it really begins to grind on you.  The missions sort of had an MMO "you've done this before but we've altered this mission slightly" curse going.  It also began to grind on me.

Granted I have read ZERO about BL2 to avoid any potential spoilers of the first game, so all of this could have been addressed.

Moxxi's a bit odd.  Whether Where the game lives long-term is Knoxx.  The general himself is a hoot.  And then there's Crawmerax.  Did you take him on yet?  It's really designed to be a coop fight, but it can be done solo.  This is where you get the best loot in the game by far.  You also need to do the 2nd playthrough and move on to the so-called PT 2.5, where everything is leveled at or above your level.  Very different experience from the easy PT 1.  You'll really need to collect good gear to have a chance in the real endgame, and there's practically no limit to the variety and quality of the guns and other gear you can find.  This is where the game gets its long legs.

[Edit:  "Whether"?  Ugh!  Wonder what I was thinking.]
Title: Re: What I'd like to see in Borderlands 2
Post by: K-man on Friday, March 23, 2012, 07:10:44 AM
I am fairly sure I tackled Crawmerax with a few friends.  Although at the time they were doing a bit of handholding since they were in the upper 40's in level.  I know we finished the General Knoxx DLC, so if that boss was part of the main quest line then we for sure beat him.

And yeah I'll probably delve into a second playthrough at some point, but for the moment I'm satisfied with my progress.  There are a ton of other games that I haven't given a first play through yet, much less a second.

10 years ago the promise of better loot would drive me along like it did with Diablo 2.  I think the gear quality sort of plateaued toward the end of the first play through, which was a little discouraging.
Title: Re: What I'd like to see in Borderlands 2
Post by: Cobra951 on Saturday, March 24, 2012, 08:00:27 AM
Crawmerax is basically a loot pinata, and the gear he drops eclipses the garden-variety stuff you normally get from bandits and skags.  And he respawns.  He's always at a high level too.  People who keep playing this game after months and years spend a lot of time taking down the big lobster.  It's the only way to get the best stuff.  The General Knoxx armory is good too, but without exploiting a certain glitch, your runs there are too short to be worth the time and effort.

BL2 to get a 5th Class as DLC. (http://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16795)
Those who pre-order, this class is FREE for you as soon as it's available.
For those who don't, it'll come to you around 60-90 days after the DLC's been out for those who pre-ordered.

That's kinda what they did with the Borderlands GOTY and bonus stuff like the Duke Nukem demo: the demo was available to people who got the GOTY immediately but was released publicly a month later or so.

The DLC is time-delayed but will it also be free for those who don't pre-order? (sorry I can't view the link due to proxy restrictions in the office)
Title: Re: What I'd like to see in Borderlands 2
Post by: idolminds on Monday, April 09, 2012, 09:44:17 PM
Thats something I'm not clear on. It will be "available" after the time delay, but I haven't seen any clarification if that means we'll have to buy it.

So basically punish people for not preordering. Way to go.

The original article was misleading. They updated it with this:

"To clarify confusion regarding our original wording, while preorders will receive the Mechromancer for free, the content will release to all players at the same time. That date is not set but a Gearbox representative said it would be 60 to 90 days after the game releases."

So it will be a paid post-release DLC for non-preorder customer and a free post-release DLC for preorder customers. It will release at the same time for everyone. Odds are it will be on sale during the holiday sale as well. I know I got burned pre-ordering the original Borderlands due to that.

I'm taking a post there at face value, for what it's worth.  It's a shitty thing to do either way.

Perhaps I ought to wait for a GOTY again... I usually avoid pre-orders unless the upfront offer is worthwhile i.e. 20% off vouchers etc. I'll see how things pan out.

Borderlands is one of those games that's gonna depend on how many people I know are playing. If enough friends convince me to go for it then I'll cave :P

I was a fairly late adopter of the first one, hence why I grabbed the GOTYE, and it was awesome while it lasted. In fact the only reason I stopped was everybody else stopped. I kicked around the singleplayer for a while before I got bored and moved on.

Hmm.. I'm feeling nostalgic. I think I still have my save file too. Anybody feel like playing some BL coop?

Also, at $150 they can give you a printed copy of the comic instead of a download code. Jesus.

BeefJack -> Big uproar right now that Russian and CIS territories are getting their own region-locked version of Borderlands 2. (http://beefjack.com/news/russia-and-the-cis-get-their-own-unwanted-version-of-borderlands-2/)

Quote
First up, when people pre-ordered Borderlands 2 it wasn’t listed as anything other Borderlands 2, nor was there anything that implied they will be getting their own version that won’t be compatible with the rest of the world, but alas everyone in these areas will be getting Borderlands 2 – RU. It is a version that is only in Russian, allows you to only play multiplayer with people who have the RU version and it will not be compatible with the Borderlands 2 Season Pass. On top of all that there is threat of delayed DLC, something that happened with the Russian version of Borderlands 1, no pre-loading and if you live in these areas you don’t have the option of buying a digital version of the game that isn’t the Russian version.

Quote
One of the biggest problems with all of this is that the Russian version is being forced upon areas that aren’t Russian, like the CIS, where many people speak English or other languages. They are being given only the option of the Borderlands 2 – RU version, regardless of whether or not they speak Russian. It wouldn’t be so bad if people could play the game in English and have subtitles for whatever their language is, but many people are reporting that this RU version does not have that option.

They need to iron out the kinks, but I think region locking is understandable in a multiplayer style game like this. If people buy copies that cost 80% less from such countries to play a game there needs to be some protection.

How do they restrict people from buying from retailers and selling online undercutting themselves? The other option is to sell the game at the same price in poor countries as it is in the rest of the world, but then those people miss out completely..

The same way all online retailers currently do it. For example, I can't buy Max Payne 3 anywhere online or retail for that matter. To get my hands on it I had to resort to the old tactic of having a friend pick up a copy for me when he was in the US. Now imagine how infuriating it would have been if the game wouldn't run or had some pointless localization issue built right into it!

I'm against any form of regional restriction, especially for digital distribution platforms. I understand the pricing scheme angle when it comes to regions with poor economies but I'm suffering from a different angle altogether; I'm not trying to purchase from a region that's selling an item below its market retail value, I'm being overcharged for items well beyond their market retail value. That's assuming the item is even available to my region as well. For example, EA is the worst at this, when Battlefield 3 first released it was available for purchase through Origin but I was being charged 60 Euros for it, the game's value was $60 USD, that means I was being charged $79 to purchase a digital copy. In this case availability wasn't the issue but pricing certainly was.

It's understandable when it's a retail problem, e.g. there is no local publisher or the publisher refuses to ship to the region, but publishers have effectively carried redundant problems over to a medium where they don't even apply. The thought process is archaic and makes no sense. Digital distribution solutions effectively nullify such problems and the only reason a game is not digitally available in a region is purely bureaucratic. Ever see an indie title with regional restriction? No if anything at all language may be the only applicable barrier and it's often easily resolved.

Well, I just "preordered" this.  Yes, it still counts as a preorder today (woo!), so I'm getting the "Premiere Club" code(s) plus a $10 Amazon credit.  Should arrive in a couple of days, if not tomorrow.  I checked 2-day delivery, but the Amazon warehouse we usually get stuff from is right across the Ohio River in N. Kentucky.  I often get Amazon orders the next day.  I'm excited for this.  Let's hope it lives up to the hype.

Borderlands 2 - Launch Trailer. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=LHfHzSTqQ_Q)

SPOILERS!!!
GiantBomb -> Quick Look EX - Borderlands 2 (X360) goes on for almost 52 minutes. (http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-ex-borderlands-2/17-6536/)

EDIT:
Oh, this is interesting...around 24:25 into the QuickLook EX, they discuss how story progression now works in Co-Op MP.
There are no ineligible games anymore.
If you join someone else's game and they are way ahead of your local game, if you go ahead and do some quests w/ them...
...THEN you go back to your local game and reach those quests you already did w/ others, it'll ask you if you'd like to SKIP those quests or REPLAY them...

At 27:09, it's explained an early focus tests told GearBox they wanted more back-story on the Vault-Hunters themselves, so they added some of that stuff as side-quests.

At 33:24, they start discussing the new "Safe" Co-Op Player Trading System.

I've got this coming by UPS tomorrow for Xbox, have a full group to play with as soon as we all get it, and still don't know which character to play.

In BL1 I played a fast and aggressive Siren. Lots of phasewalk, close range elemental SMG action. I played with a soldier and sniper, so while they sat back shooting stuff from range, I sprinted/phasewalked in and shot guys in the face point blank. The new siren has phaselock instead of phasewalk, which compared to zipping around in stealth, seems pretty boring. the assassin has stealth, but he seems so single target oriented. If I play him, I'm gonna miss that aoe dmg coming out of phasewalk.

I'm definitely going to give both a try, but I don't really want to get to level 10-15 with my friends and say "ok guys, hang out for a couple hours while I reroll the other class and catch up, since I'd rather play that."

EDIT: Also, it looks like my group already has a Zer0 and Axton for sure. Maya may not be taken at all unless I do. Also, in BL1 I was almost always the last person alive any time a situation went bad. Maya has some great healing and rezzing abilities I could probably put to good use if I'm going to be better at surviving than the rest of them. (though my survivability probably had to do with phasewalk abuse with it specced to regen health)

His main gripe with the game seems to be that it's not CoD: Black Ops 2 nor Halo 4.

The first game had no adversarial multiplayer modes (save for the ability to challenge another player to a duel), why did he expect Borderlands 2 to have any and then penalized it for not having them?! He may as well have been complaining about not being able to aim-down-sight in a Command & Conquer game!

EDIT:
On the bright side, the comments are ripping him to shreds!

There’s an extremely limited four-player cooperative mode, and if you have an Xbox Live Gold account, you can team up that way, but this isn’t the type of deeply engrossing FPS game the headset-wearing COD crowds gather to play months and months after release. In comparison, I read on several sites that COD: Black Ops 2 will feature up to six teams, for a total of 18 simultaneous players, in multiplayer mode.
That's the friggin' point - Borderlands is the Anti-COD and Anti-Halo.
BL was NEVER built for competitive play; it's really built for Solo or Co-Op.
Borderlands is more like a ARPG - but spin the genre on its head by making it more Shooter-based than melee-based.
If anything, Borderlands series is probably best compared to say Hellgate: London - and HG:L isn't 100% like BL, since HGL has both melee-based characters & gun-based characters.

Game arrived yesterday. I haven't turned it on today yet. Raptr says I've played it for 16 hours lol.

The siren's phaselock ability is way better than I expected. I still don't have nearly as much survivability, but I guess that's by design, because Lilith was sort of broken.

Like the original Borderlands before it, Borderlands 2 will have a number of lengthy DLC expansions. The first may be coming from The Workshop, developers of the recently-released PlayStation Move game, Sorcery.

Resumes from current and former employees of the developer indicate they are working on an expansion, currently named "Torgue"--the same name as one of the weapons manufacturers of Pandora.

Little is known about the expansion, but as Superannation notes on Kotaku, this "unannounced expansion" promises to have over ten hours of gameplay. As previously announced, each expansion pack will cost $10 but you can also pick up a season pass if you like what you're playing so far.

No, Xbox.  A couple of years ago, they added the ability to install games to the hard drive.  If you choose to install, the system copies the whole disc.  Then when you launch the game, the disc gets verified, and quits spinning entirely.  Best system update by far.

This game is amazing. As good as the first game was...this one is just so much better. I just hit lvl 17, I have to work in 8 hours, and there's no way that I'm going to stop playing anytime soon.

I played co-op with 1 other person until around lvl 13 or so and it was slightly challenging towards the latter levels, but solo it seems easier. Could just be because I got some decent gear. Co-op is certainly more fun, as with the first.

The game also runs really smoothly, which is nice because some of my other games (Crysis 2 and Battlefield 3 namely) struggle a little bit maxed out.
Title: Re: What I'd like to see in Borderlands 2
Post by: Cobra951 on Friday, September 21, 2012, 07:01:36 AM
It was a frustrating start for me.  The first game eases you into the difficulty curve as you ramp up your character's attributes, like how many items you can hold, and how many guns you can quick-select.  In this one, you are thrown into some tough mobs while still wet behind the ears.  I've died numerous times.  The frustrations for early characters are still there, and amplified.  Trying to decide which guns, shields, etc to keep and which to throw away is an ordeal, since stats (still) don't give you anywhere near enough information.  This is one area I hoped to see improved, but it really wasn't.  Then I reached a certain place (
(click to show/hide)
), and things got a lot more manageable.  More quick-select slots, more weapon slots, some good weapons to find, and a place to put my stuff.

Enemies seem smarter this time around.  The badasses are more dismaying than ever.  Shooting them often feels like hitting them with tennis balls.  Enemy spawning also got more hairy.  Waves of them keep popping up almost right on top of you.  Eventually, they stop, or slow down?  (Not sure how this works yet.)  But at first, I thought the spawning system was broken, with bad guys popping up so much that you could do nothing but fight them.  Looting, choosing gear and exploring seemed out of the question.

Vehicle controls still have the same dumb 2-stick controls.  Instead of letting you throttle and steer it with the left, and aim the turret with the right (as it should be), you can only aim in the direction that you're looking.  The vehicle always goes where you're looking with the right stick, totally neglecting one entire axis on the left stick (which is only used as throttle).  Another hope dashed.  Oh well.

Beware of some apparent bone-headedness on the saved data.  From what I've been reading, it may be possible to wipe out your badass rank (http://gamersbench.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/badassreset.jpg) if you switch characters on the same profile.  The intent was to make the badass rank global across your characters (itself a boneheaded thing to do).  The reality may be that starting a new character on the same profile wipes out the badass data from the global file (profile).  But the challenges you completed to earn it are still considered completed, globally!  So there is no way to make up the lost ground on that one profile.  If this is true, GBX has some fires to put out, and fuck them for letting this get through to the released version.  Since I play solo, what I'll do for now is use a different profile for each character I create.  It doesn't matter that I can only go online with Axton.  (Yes, I started out with the soldier again.  Haha!)

That it is, and once you get a foothold in the world and the gear, it's great fun!  Performance is very smooth, and there's an extra layer of polish on everything since the 1st game.  You can tell it's the same engine, down to the quirks like your sprint getting stopped by a pebble one inch high and visible geometry not always in the same place as collision geometry.  But it all feels more refined.  I'm having a blast (in more ways than one).

I wonder what causes the badass rank issue. I've got 2 characters on the same profile and haven't had an issue. I got my badass rank up near 1000 with my siren, then made an assassin and had all the bonuses of the badass rank, but was able to do all the challenges over again. I went back onto my siren and her stuff is still all the same, except with the increased badass rank from what my assassin did.

I don't know.  But enough people are experiencing this to be alarming.  It seems related to game data being saved in 2 different places: your normal save file, and your profile.  I want to believe that some users are being stupid, but I haven't seen any truly reassuring answers yet.  I want to see more official input on the subject.

It might also have to do with the save also being stored in the cloud or on a USB memory stick. I don't ever use a stick with my console, and have cloud saving disabled (I only own 1 xbox, would rather not wait for it to sync cloud saves if I'm not using them).

Yeah, I don't understand how people can trust that cloud thing.  Forza 4 in particular was a horror show.  In conjunction with the developer's horrid policies to prevent cheating online, many users were left with invalidated game profiles (read: save progress), and had to start all over.  I would only ever use the cloud as yet another backup, which would only work if the game allows me to copy my save files instead of just moving them.  Fortunately, BL2 does.  I have the cloud disabled at the moment, but I've been thinking about giving it a go for backups.

But with BL2, GBX apparently did a stupid thing.  They save the global (for all characters) part of the saved data into your profile.  I mean your Xbox account's profile, which is one big dumping ground for the system and for inconsiderate developers.  Your profile cannot be backed up without shenanigans such as copying from a USB stick to a PC hard drive.  If you save it on one box and recover it later on another, or anything else happens to it, you can lose game data saved in it.  In the BL2 case, that means your save file can go out of sync with the saved data in your profile.

After reading all of the 2 main threads at the BL2 forums (one in General Discussion, one in Tech Support) I still think this problem is cause for concern, and there still is no definitive answer on causes, prevention or solutions.

He doesn't even have a second character that I'm seeing, which makes me think it isn't related to starting a new character. The one thing I see him do that I have never done is exit to dashboard with a character already selected. I'm not sure why, but I ALWAYS back out to the title screen before exiting to dashboard. I also always exit to dashboard before shutting the system off. It's a mild OCD type thing I do with all my games, maybe it has saved me here (and will probably reinforce this habit lol).

Joystiq -> Borderlands 2 will ALSO have Non-Season Pass DLC...
...More Non-Season Pass DLC than just the upcoming Mechromancer DLC. (http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/23/borderlands-2-will-have-non-season-pass-dlc-pitchford-promise/)

Quote
Borderlands 2 is getting four confirmed slices of DLC as part of the Season Pass, but it has even more planned, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford tells Kotaku. We already know about one piece of additional non-Season Pass content, the Mechromancer.

"We will have other, non-season pass related DLC," Pitchford says. "The additional character (Mechromancer) is one kind of example."

We've heard rumblings of themes for future Borderlands 2 DLC: One may be an expansion on the weapons manufacturer Torgue, and another might involve Sand Skiff-like transportation. Pitchford reiterates a vehicle-focused DLC approach.

"Since we finished the game, we've started with some new ideas that we expect will show up in DLC," Pitchford says. "Some new vehicle types are on-deck – awesome stuff."

All of the Season Pass DLC packs will be "big," similar to the third expansion for the original Borderlands, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx. Knoxx raised the level cap, added 30 new enemy types, new weapons, new vehicles and improved the AI.

"The stuff we're planning and working on for the Campaign DLC Season Pass is big DLC stuff – more like Knoxx," Pitchford says. "We're extremely far along with the first campaign DLC. The second DLC is also in amazing shape. The third DLC is a little farther out and the fourth DLC is just in the pre-concept stages."

I haven't had a problem with inventory space yet because I don't need money for anything except for ammo and the occasional vender item. Although, as of late, I have become addicted to the gambling machines so I've been picking up more stuff to fuel that habit. I keep getting *so close* to rolling a legendary out of the slots...
Title: Re: What I'd like to see in Borderlands 2
Post by: Cobra951 on Sunday, September 30, 2012, 04:54:13 AM
Oh yeah.  There are 2 firestorms on the official forums.  One is the unforgivable BAR-reset bug, and the other is the egregious reduction in inventory and bank space.  27 slots is max in BL2, while over 40 were available to be unlocked one way or another in vanilla, and that increased to 72 with all the DLC, along with a generously sized bank.  (I forget what the bank space was.)  The bank in BL2 starts at 6 slots.  Yes, this huge bank-like safe can hold a total of 6 items, and grows to a measly dozen or a bit more, max.  Ridiculous.  A loot-based game where you can't store loot.  This was a long-running complaint with the first game, which is why they added the bank in one of the DLCs.  That they repeated the deficiency in the 2nd game and made it worse strikes me as an intentional setup for a cash grab down the line.  Nothing else makes sense.

I already created a mule character, and she's full.  I'll be making another one soon.  I read that the inventory space can already be hacked to be much bigger in the PC game.  The console game apparently requires some encryption cracking.

Huh. That's cool. I don't know if I'll have time try her before the end of the month but I might load her up just to see.

So I've been meaning to post for a couple of days now about the game. While there's lots to be and has been said about how the game has been improved, but I feel like there hasn't been a lot of talk about how the tone of the game has shift somewhat. I feel like the game is a lot darker than the first. It's still got the irreverence that the first game had, but with more detail about the world and its inhabitants I feel like we're learning just how fucked up (and I use that for emphasis) Pandora is. The reasoning behind a lot of the background, events of the game, and acts committed by your character(s) is often just downright psychotic. The best parallel I can draw would be like from going from Invader Zim to Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. Both are obviously from the same source and use similar styles, but one just just more raw and willing to take things further.

The strange thing is that I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it. There was a sort of lightheartedness to the original Borderlands which sort seems to be present in the generally irreverence for pretty much everything in the sequel. However, it is quickly overshadowed when the game sort of starts to make you feel bad for generally being a murderer in a place that seems to breed murderers. While your characters (or all the characters for that matter, especially the original Vault Hunters) might be doing good things in some fashion they're hardly what you'd call good people. A large part of me thinks that it's kind of a subtle move on the part of Gearbox to make the game more subversive but it also makes things a little more uncomfortable than I might want out of an experience like Borderlands. I think in the end I'm glad the game went this route and is probably at least more interesting because of it but it mostly caught me off guard.

Edit: Just a heads up. Word on the street is that the patch might be responsible for some problems which cause things like badass rank or character resents. I'm not sure how reliable the rumor is (or if it's still the old problem that people are running into again because they're making new characters), but it might be worth looking out for/into if you intend to play soon.

It's more than a rumor.  I'm not allowing the patch or grabbing the DLC until I learn more about what triggers the BAR reset.  Several people have posted on the GBX forums about how merely updating the game with the DLC-related patch afflicted them with the bug.  Others report that their updates went smoothly.  It's a huge screwup that should have been fixed before releasing the DLC.  Instead, the problem got worse.

The game itself is indeed much darker.  I'm far along into the story, and I was shocked numb by some of the developments.  I don't think I like that direction either.  The goofiness now seems at odds with the plot developments.  Also, SP is much more difficult than BL1's, which is hampering my enjoyment of the gameplay.  Too much frustration.  The first was near perfection for me, and it's not too surprising the 2nd couldn't live up to that.  It is still an excellent game, though.

Edit:
Quote from: ChrisF
The good news is that the release of Mechromancer and today's update are not connected to the occurrences of Badass Rank being reset -- while the timing may appear coincidental, it's a separate issue that we are continuing to investigate. We ask that players who have experienced this issue to email us at profiles@gearboxsoftware.com with as many details as possible to help us gather additional information on the matter.

I took his word for it, and all was well.  Got the update and new character without issue.

Hmmm, maybe I'm just not far enough in the game to see how it's super dark? Or maybe my perspective has me perceiving it differently. Yea, you murder a lot of people, and it's fun, and sometimes it's funny. I just finished a quest where scooter writes a poem. If you've done it, that should ring a bell. At the end I laughed my ass off. Also, I love Handsome Jack. The way he's so cheery and nice sounding while he's threatening to murder you or torturing people is hilarious.

The poem and results were actually funny.  Heheh!  Handsome Jack takes after Knoxx in his demeanor (and is done about as well), but he is much more evil.  If you don't know what I mean by dark, you must not be far enough into the story.  There is a glimpse of it early.  Did you not do the sidequest in Liar's Berg involving stray echo logs?  I found that disturbing.  There's also a communication from Jack where he's laughing so much as he tells you

that he's having trouble finishing the tale.  " I guess you had to be there."

Xbox Live Community Manager Major Nelson tweeted (https://twitter.com/majornelson/status/256394298256408576) that the Pirate DLC "Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate's Booty" will release October 16.

So, with the WoW expansion (which I've already stopped playing), and Guild Wars 2, I still haven't finished the first playthrough of Borderlands 2. I'm on the story mission "The Man Who Would Be Jack" and just arrived in Opportunity. Am I close to the end? I'd like to finish before this DLC hits, but have been playing exclusively when my friend is on.

I haven't finished PT1 either.  Haha!  I played Axton till level 31, then Maya for a while, and now I'm playing Gaige (Level 14).  You still have some serious work to do to get to where I got to with the commando, and from the look of things, the final push might be coming up for him in the next story mission.  I'd say maybe 2-3 more long story missions for you (including your current one).

Captain Scarlett's Pirate Booty (http://www.vg247.com/2012/10/15/borderlands_2_dlc_captain_scarletts_pirate_booty/) is about to hit.  It's looking sweet.  I'll probably wait a bit because of the BAR-reset bug.  I'm too afraid of getting it to change anything in the game until I get some feedback.

It looks like the title for DLC2 is Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage.

There are three PS3 Trophies connected to it and they're all pretty similar to the Achievement/Trophy rewards attached to Captain Scarlett. One Trophy unlocks for completing the "Long Way to the Top" mission (presumably the last in the add-on pack's story), one is awarded for completing all Campaign of Carnage side missions, and one goes to players who manage to find 10 collectible pictures of Moxxi in the DLC.

None of this is officially confirmed of course, but the info certainly suggests that it's possible we'll see a second Borderlands 2 expansion before the end of 2012.

I warn you that the game is even more skewed toward coop than the first.  True vault-hunter mode (late game) and MMO-like raid bosses in the DLC are way unbalanced solo.  It's not a question of difficulty, but of cheapness.

So I guess they took the complaints of the difficulty in the original being too low to heart, because these are some tough bandits. Many fights end with me basically one shot away from death. Either they made the enemies harder or I just have some really shitty weapons. Its the start of the game so...could be that.

The "Shift Code" thing is kind of interesting. Shift being some kind of Gearbox specific service that for the most part doesn't seem to do much. Except give you gold keys to unlock some special chest in one of the towns. I guess it has good loot. Anyway what makes the Shift code system interesting is it keeps Borderlands 2 in peoples minds. Want more keys? Well follow their twitter or facebook. Even if you don't do that, forum threads on various internet boards get bumped with people posting the codes. And you have to launch the game to input the code...so oh hell, might as well play a little. And the player gets some loot out of the ingenious marketing trick. Everybody wins! I think. I went through a thread on another board where codes were being posted and just went backwards up the list until I was consistently hitting outdated codes. Now I have 18 gold keys.
Title: Re: What I'd like to see in Borderlands 2
Post by: Cobra951 on Friday, December 28, 2012, 07:44:58 AM
Guns are shitty by default, and finding good ones is much more difficult than in the first game.  To make matters much worse, the difference between levels is dramatically higher, especially in PT2 (TVHM).  So those awesome Level-33 purples you got from a big boss fight at the end of PT1 become obsolete within a few levels in PT2, and you're better off with trashy white weapons you pick up at vendors and off the ground.

The difficulty you're experiencing now is nothing compared to what you'll be experiencing later.  Some of it is very cheap.  For example, a garden-variety rakk can occasionally take all of your shield and nearly all of your health in a single hit.  This mechanic completely ignores things like your level advantage, or huge shield/HP numbers.  Some internal dice roll says "screw the player" and the game code makes it so.

I was doing ok until I got to this one particular boss, which I then died at about 10 times before finally getting past him. Oh hey, he has a shotgun! Oh hey, so does his bodyguard....who also has a shield that I can't shoot through. Lucky Im a mechromancer and my robot can distract that shield guy so I can shoot him in the back...other wise I was just boned the whole time. As it was I took out the guard and then had to run around until I could send me bot out a second time to distract the boss. Yeesh.

But I did get some better weapons and am enjoying the game quite a bit. Just have to be really careful how you approach fights.

Fuck that Constructor boss. I beat him by kind of cheesing it but I have no idea how you could legitimately beat that thing solo. Ate up half my caustic SMG ammo just breaking his shield.
Title: Re: What I'd like to see in Borderlands 2
Post by: Cobra951 on Monday, December 31, 2012, 08:37:39 AM
Don't waste caustic on the shield.  Shock damage is better.  In fact, shock is better in BL2 than it is in 1.  After the shield is gone, switch to caustic.  But yeah, constructors are bitches, particularly if they get time to start assembling new armies of robots before your very eyes.

Yes, drop rates are awful.  What you find in vendors is awful.  Hang on to any elemental Vladof machine pistols you find, down to green.  They kick the crap out of ARs, even Vladof's own, and even many SMGs (Maliwan or otherwise).
Title: Re: What I'd like to see in Borderlands 2
Post by: idolminds on Monday, December 31, 2012, 04:01:10 PM
Yeah, you're right. The difficulty is just sort of jacked for solo play. Got a quest, my quest log says normal difficulty. Find some varkids and inject one of their pods. Out pops a mutated badass, with an attack that one shots my shield, second shot nearly kills me, and 3rd shot does kill me. I manage to take it down with mostly pure luck and use of my mechro robot. Then the quest tasks me with doing it 4 more times.

Damn it, Gearbox.

Had my first slag weapon drop. Yes, 15 levels and not a single one dropped until now. Dunno if that normal, like its limited to weapons level 15 and up but it was sorta weird. Lucky too because I used that SMG on the mutated badasses then switched to a fire SMG and pounded some damage into it.

Luckily pyro and I got multiplayer going the other night and its mostly playable for me. So perhaps I'll end up just playing online like Gearbox apparently wants me to.

EDIT:
So this is interesting. Just loading up the game you automatically "online", and playing solo people can join your game or something like that. No one has so far so I didnt worry about it and left the setting alone. Reading threads online of people not noticing the difficulty spike from BL1...I was confused. How can you not tell the difference? It sure felt like the game wanted me to be playing with another person. So...I wondered....

In-game (not a Steam thing) I set BL2 to Offline play. I don't know if that really changed anything or what, but it sure felt like things were taken down a notch in difficulty. It wasnt easy, but it felt like I was fighting same level opponents instead of buffed ones. I'll play some more like that, maybe switch it back and see if I can notice anything, but maybe its an obscure bug?

Another weird thing. Random gun generator somehow managed to generate the exact same SMG for me twice.

EDIT2:
Ok, maybe its just in my head or something. Playing "online" (by myself) and things went ok. Maybe I just leveled up enough and found some decent weapons.

Still...fuck constructors.

I'm desperately trying to devote a little time here and there to BL. Just killed the Baron and dug in a bit after that, finished off Zombie Island. Like level 34 I think right now. Just trying to blast through the rest so I can maybe get into 2 a little when I find time.

Awesome. Pyro and I played a little more BL2 tonight. Some lag, which is to be expected. The kind of random crash right before the boss sucked but luckily I was able to get back in without too much trouble. Dunno what causes the crash, only one I had in SP was me shooting a rocket shotgun into a berzerker that just did his weird blood transform. Probably the physx blood went crazy or something....just guessing.

So still having a lot of fun with this. Up to level 23 now. Difficulty has kind of leveled off a bit, but maybe I'm just getting more leveled up because Im doing all the sidequests. I respecced my mechromancer and started using Anarchy, which should pretty much be standard issue for all mechromancers. Every time you kill an enemy or empty your weapon (in combat only), you gain a stack of anarchy which increases your gun damage but reduces your accuracy. Once you build up like 200 stacks and wield a powerful shotgun you just one-shot most anything that comes near you. Those "crappy" shotguns with high damage but tiny mags and low accuracy? Those are for anarchy. The hardest part is reloading manually will remove all your stacks. Thats also why low mag size shotguns that reload after every shot are ideal. A, it adds a stack every shot and B, cant accidentally reload it.

And if I had another gripe, its the menus. Better than BL1? Yes. But they arent really good menus. When I respecced it was a pain to do because you have to switch panes. There is a button to show all 3 panes at once...great! Oh, except in that mode mousing over a skill doesnt show what that skill does. Really, Gearbox?

heh, sorry man.

I went and did all my sidequests before doing the next story mission. I'm pretty overleveled for them so it wasn't that hard. Even so, those arena battles get crazy. Loot was dropping around me level so I'm guessing by round 5 it was close to same level stuff (Im level 27, was getting level 25 drops and such). Lucky I had my Deathtrap with me, even then he would get killed and Id have to work the room for a minute before I could resummon him. But that round 5....I had like 5-6 second winds before it was all over. Oh, and there was a secondary objective for each round to get a bunch of critical kills. Thats something you do in co-op because no way was I going to be able to pay attention to that and live.

Then for a bit I felt bad, because the very next quest I picked up was "Kill 100 bandits". I did way more than that doing the arena line, I would have been done! But this quest had secondary objectives. 4 of them, each one was kill 25 bandits with fire, shock, corrosive, and explosive. The trick being that when you hit 100, no matter how they die, thats it. If you don't do the numbers exactly then you'll fail the bonus. So I went back into a low level area where I wouldn't have to run around like crazy. Long story short, I was able to complete all 4 secondary objectives. Got a funny sniper rifle and some cash for the trouble.

All I have now is the story quest, and it looks like its going to be a little crazy.

I just beat the main story! Hooray! Though it was funny, the fight leading up to the last boss I felt was more difficult than the last boss itself. Though note to self, constructors really don't like my rocket launcher.

Also my Deathtrap sorta screwed things up at the end. See, in the last fight room there are all these rakk flying around for easy second winds, and they constantly respawn. Letting Deathtrap loose in there and he just constantly kills them, and each kill extends how much time he stays out...so he just stays out continuously. This is fairly useful (and you can totally farm XP by just letting him out and walking away from your computer for a while), except when you want to listen to the last words of Jack and maybe do the bonus objective but then Deathtrap just targets and one shots him mid-sentence. Thanks, dude! Thanks a whole bunch!

So now I can finish up some of the side quests and then jump into the DLC! I'm probably already overleveled for that stuff so it should be just a fun time with pirates.

Ahaha!  Yes, letting DT kill hundreds of rakks is entertaining and useful.  On the console, with splitscreen mode, you can level up a second character quickly this way.  He just stands away from the fight, and collects tons of XP from DT.

I wish I could do that easily on PC. Would like to level some other characters but going through the whole game again....I dunno if I want to. Especially since you have to go through the game again just to reach the level cap on one character.

The DLC is pretty cool so far. And yes, I'm overleveled for it so it goes by pretty quick.

The DLC for BL2 is pretty good, but the new skin pack (http://www.gearboxsoftware.com/community/articles/991/new-borderlands-2-heads-and-skins-available) is kind of weird. 15 heads and skins, which is 3 new heads and skins for each character. The catch? All sold separately. 99 cents per head/skin combo. Not really sure how well this is even going to sell considering for the most part you don't see yourself in-game.

Granted I like collecting all the heads and skins that are already in the game, or come with the big DLC packs. I just am not interested in paying to buy a bunch more individually. Of course its all on Steam so just wait for a $2 "All Skins" sale.

I love how it's often white guys who find something racially offensive to other peoples' ethnicity.

No offence to anyone here, of course, but I've gone through similar situations in university where a group of multicultural, multi-ethnic people are having a discussion and a white person gets up and accuses a Latino guy of offending the Africans by saying "Black" in English or "negro" in Spanish despite the Africans speaking out and saying there was no offence taken at all (P.S. in that scenario I was in the African crowd even though I'm not Black, I'm technically African, geographically Egyptian etc.).

Anyway, I really hope they don't change Tina. I love her as she is!

More stuff! (http://www.shacknews.com/article/78362/borderlands-2-new-vault-hunter-level-cap-detailed)

New vault hunter: Krieg, the Psycho. Yeah, you get to play as one of the enemies...or something. Melee focused in a game about randomly generated guns? Ok... He's gonna be $10.

Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode: a New Game++, a third playthrough on an even higher difficulty. This will be a free update, but not too useful unless you get...

This new pack, free for season pass owners, $5 otherwise. This pack raises the skill cap to 61 and adds a new top tier Pearlescent weapons.

Gearbox's Shift thing is not far off from Ubisoft's Uplay. Well, sorta. You end up having to go to a website to set it up for the first time. Then from within the game you can go to extras, then Shift, and put in codes. For Borderlands 2 these are Golden Keys 90% of the time. (golden keys open the chest in town, which seems to be 100% chance of being epic, and you get 2-4 items.) Once or twice they've given away character outfits with Shift codes. For Aliens: Colonial Marines, they did it once that I know of and it gave a new marine customization option in multiplayer (a chest emblem).

From watching the official Gearbox twitter, as well as Randy Pitchford's, I have something like 65 golden keys. I'm saving most for when I hit max level (not even playing the game right now, so it may be a while lol).

Yep.  And think about what that means for the game.  It means that the best looting mechanic is to follow Randy on twitter.  The game has a ridiculously low drop rate of anything worthwhile, with most of the best stuff being reserved for raid bosses and other such situations where multiple players are a practical requirement.  I am so done with it.

I loved it, found lots of great weapons, 2 legendaries, on my first run. I refuse to use those keys to get better weapons, I like just playing the game out right and getting them from pure randomness.

The funny part is I spent a few keys and the weapons I got were crap I didn't end up using anyway. They sold for a good amount, though.
Title: Re: What I'd like to see in Borderlands 2

The stuff I've gotten from the golden chest has always been leaps and bounds beyond what I had at the time. You don't always get what you want though. I've been using SMGs, assault rifles, and shotguns mostly. I can use a key and get 2 snipers, or 4 shields, or 4 grenades (which are all good, but not of a style that I like). There's enough variety in item slots and variations that the chance of actually getting the weapon type you want is pretty low.
Title: Re: What I'd like to see in Borderlands 2
Post by: idolminds on Monday, March 25, 2013, 08:15:25 PM
I always seem to get rocket launchers when I use the keys. Those things are almost impossible to use with any regularity because of the extremely low ammo you can hold.

Man, Gearbox, make a class that can hold a lot of rocket ammo so I can rain death and explosions on my foes.

Some more details on the new stuff. April 2nd brings the patch with free stuff, including:
Quote
     Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode Details

Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode is unlocked for a character once they have completed the main story missions in True Vault Hunter Mode and reached level 50.
Unlike other playthroughs, Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode can be replayed multiple times with players able to reset their overall mission progress at any time from the Main Menu.
No more tutorial missions -- characters in Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode begin in Southern Shelf with the "Cleaning Up the Berg" mission.
While playing in Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, enemies and bosses will scale according to the player's current level or, if playing with others, the highest-level player in that party.
        Gameplay changes in UVHM:
            Enemy health generally increased 4x.
Enemies now have a moderate amount of health regeneration.
Increased duration of slag damage multiplier effect.
Upped the damage that slagged enemies take from 2x to 3x.
Weapon swap speed increased to better facilitate slag use.
Enemies now more likely to drop ammo.
Loot Midgets are now "Legendary Loot Midgets" that can drop Legendary and other top-tier gear.

Also, storage upgrades!
Quote
Changes in 4/2 Software Update (Free)

Adds new items to the Black Market:
One additional ammo upgrade for each ammo type, at 50 Eridium each.
Two more backpack storage space upgrades, at 50 and 100 Eridium respectively.
Two more bank storage space upgrades, at 50 and 100 Eridium respectively.
Increases the maximum amount of Eridium players can hold from 99 to 500.
Adds a new playthrough balanced for top-tier play: Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode.
        Various bug fixes.

Just finished Borderlands 2 (PC), after 62 hours total or so (OMG!).

Wowsers, as much as I loved the original (b/c it just felt so fresh & different than most games - i.e. combine a FPS with a loot-driven ARPG), this sequel was such an improvement in the original. Every real concern I had w/ lack of storytelling; some characters not having much really to them; and a not-so-great final boss battle = all gone in this game.

Though, again - I just wish the end....

Regardless, awesome game. :D

Though, again - I just wish the end....
(click to show/hide)

I didn't really feel that way after beating it.

(click to show/hide)

I really got burned out on the game after a while when it first came out. I lagged behind my friends and didn't beat the game until around the time the first DLC came out. I didn't play the first DLC until around the time the second DLC came out, and that's where I sort of stopped. So then Krieg the psycho came out, and a friend offered to buy it for me if I actually played. So I played through the whole game again, with my high level friend jumping in occasionally, then we did all 3 DLCs. He's been busy lately and I still can't scratch the itch, I just want to keep playing.

I think it boils down to me choosing the wrong character to play when the game first came out. In BL1 I played the siren, which had a cool special ability that was very active. (phasewalk, basically stealth with the ability to make it do cool stuff when entering/leaving or during) The siren's ability in BL2 is boring in comparison. You get to lock one enemy down for a couple seconds, and they take more damage. It doesn't change anything about how you move or fight. So now with Krieg, I'm specced for full on melee, and it's so fun. I think part of it is the crazy shit he yells, because I'm having way more fun with him than I did messing with Brick in BL1. Oh, also the ability to throw your axe while doing your rampage.

So, Krieg the Psycho, so far...
I'm level 42 now. I've completed all 3 DLC packs with him, and I'm on playthrough 2, just reached Sanctuary. The early levels were tough, and I felt like I would die almost every time I used my Buzz Axe Rampage. This was partly because I was trying to use it defensively. See, I skimmed the skill trees early on, and decided to go with the middle tree, which is all about charging in with no regard. The final skill in that tree makes BAR instantly heal you, and you take less damage, but these benefits only work if you use it when below 33% health. With this in mind, I was using it when in trouble, but didn't have the key skill to make it useful in that way. Without that skill, I feel like BAR needs to be used more offensively. Now that I have that skill though? I feel almost unkillable. Oh, there's a badass? No problem, let him get me low, pop BAR, and just beat his face in. I willingly get in the fact of any enemy in the game, because I know that if my health gets low, I start taking less damage and doing more damage.

Initially I had planned on putting extra points into the left tree, which is focused on stacking buffs based on usage of guns. I changed my mind and now I'm going to spec into setting myself on fire (the right tree). Chance to set yourself on fire, damage reduction while on fire, more fire damage, healing from fire damage. I expect to basically be running around on fire and setting things on fire, then when situation calls for it, I can use BAR to wreck things.

To be honest, my biggest fear after playing Krieg, is that Borderlands 3 won't have a class this fun.

EDIT:
Oh, 1st playthrough on BL1 and BL2 - both were as Siren. Yeah, I loved Lilith's Phase-walk skill and surely used that A LOT more than Maya's Phase-skill. I mainly threw my skillpoints for Maya only into the Harmony section skill-set.

the fantasy theme of this new DLC has really pointd out to me that Borderlands is structured just like an MMO. You go to town, talk to NPCs and get quests, go out into a zone and do some quests, come back to town and turn it in for a reward. There's even "raid bosses" (only up to 4 people but they're referred to as raid bosses by the community) that have almost Warcraft-like mechanics and each have their own loot table.

The new DLC is pretty good, probably the best of the 4. It's got a lot of humor and a lot of references. It even touches on some more serious topics in a couple places.

I also think I may have fallen into a hole. A friend who refuses to play on Xbox got the game on PC, and I did too. Now I'm maintaining characters on both versions of the game, and playing with the 2 groups separately. Raptr now shows 6 hours logged on the PC version, and 308 hours on the Xbox version.

EDIT: I'm getting something weird (but good) with the PC version. I haven't put in a single code for a golden key, but I'm randomly getting them. I had 2 the first time I logged in. Later I had 14 and decided to spend 3. I just now started it up and have 13 again.

That sounds like most ARPG's, actually - whether SP, MP, or MMO.

I always thoughts of Borderlands as being basically (a much better) Hellgate: London w/ guns.

PC Gamer -> Borderlands 2 will have more DLC; new IP coming eventually from GearBox. (http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/07/09/borderlands-2-has-more-dlc-coming-new-ip-coming-gearbox-boss-says/)

Quote
It’s easy to imagine Borderlands 2’s trail of DLC ending with an adventure in Tiny Tina’s schizophrenic mind, but CEO and President of Gearbox Software Randy Pitchford has different plans.

Speaking on the Nerdist podcast, Pitchford said people had assumed there would only be four pieces of DLC as that’s what’s included in the season pass, but assumptions aren’t always correct.

“Everyone has this expectation that those would be the four DLCs and then that’s it,” Pitchford said. “We’re going to do more. We’re going to do some other things. We don’t have details yet about it exactly.

“We’ve got more stuff in the hopper that we’re planning and that we’re getting pretty excited about. So if you are a Borderlands fan, you don’t have to be afraid that that’s the end of it.”

The podcast ended on a mysterious note when Pitchford teased that Gearbox is working on a new IP for next-gen consoles (and PC?).

“We are building an original IP for the next generation that we’ll announce sometime later,” Pitchford said.

Pitchford didn’t give a time table for when we might hear more about this mysterious new IP, though it likely won’t be any time this year, considering we’re just hearing about it now rather than at E3.

Tiny Tinas Assault on Dragon Keep is quite awesome. I'm working my way through it now and its just got a fun setup. I like how the usual "intercom" that is in pretty much every FPS now is used in an interesting way. Sure its the intercom when characters in-world are talking to you like regular BL2, but its also used for the out-of-game chatter of the D&D game the characters are playing.

Things change as Tiny Tina changes her mind, or the characters do something. Some chests have 20 sided dice on top, the better you roll the better the loot. Just interesting twists on the formula that works well given the premise.

So far the quests have been pretty good. Yeah its the same go here, grab that style like most of the quests in BL2 but they manage to give them a lot of character that somehow keeps them fresh. Now being a game of D&D is the overall main storyline and some of the side quests are tied into that, others are MMO references or references from other games. There is a great Dark Souls quest, and another where I had to make some dudes ragequit so I could tag the respawning boss.

I havent finished the Torgue DLC and have yet to touch the hunting one, but this one is really pretty fantastic. If you don't have the season pass, be sure to grab it even by itself.

One thing to watch out for....time. Don't get to a new map and think hey, how long could this take? A LONG-ASS TIME! So don't start it late at night like I did. Then you get half way into it and you decide to see it through because...shit, you don't want to go through all that again.

I mean....yeah, shooting and looting was going on but these really long stretches that you can't save in the middle of SUCKS.

EDIT: By the way, if anyone wants an easy place to keep track of the codes as they release (and in a text format so you can highlight and copy, unlike the images they use on gearboxsoftware.com), check this link out. Even if you're not using it repeatedly to keep track of new codes (I check it daily for new golden key codes), it's a good place to get a few dozen golden keys from the old codes that are still active. There's some old item codes on there too.

Bumping this, just in case it wasn't obvious I was editing in the codes for the heads.

Also, I don't know if you actually have to have the DLC for these heads to work. I was able to redeem the Gaige head and unlock it on PC, even though I don't own her for PC.

I didn't ignore your thread.  I've purposely avoided the whole Shift nonsense, at first because it was rumored to trigger the BAR reset bug, and later because I hated the very idea of playing social games with Randy (outside the game) to get game loot.  Entering these codes requires Shift, right?  Even on the Xbox?  Shame.  Thanks anyway.

Well, I just meant that editing my post highlights it as having something new, but doesn't bump it to the top of the forum, so people may have missed it. I agree that it's shitty to have to use the SHiFT system to get heads/skins for a DLC you already bought. For anyone that was already using them for golden keys, might as well grab them.

BTW you CAN get some really good loot from the golden keys, but more often than not there are named legendary or rare (quest reward) items that are superior to random purple loot. For example, there are elemental weapons with extremely high chance to proc, much higher than you'll ever get on random loot. I recently hit 50 on my mechromancer and wanted to gear up on level 50 loot before heading into UVHM, and my 4 weapons of choice were a blue quest reward, 3 legendaries that were easily farmable, and a legendary quest reward shield. I feel like the best use of golden keys is to fill in gaps, especially while leveling. Most of the really good loot in the game can't come from that chest, so you're not really missing out by avoiding them.

(Tiny Tina DLC) Dragon Keep-themed character heads added to the Dice Chest item pool as rare loot.

There you go, I guess there are other ways of getting the heads outside of SHiFT codes.

Thanks for updating this W7RE, I've been putting the codes in as you've been posting them.

Just to reiterate again on the uselessness of golden keys: I just hit level 61 and decided to use some golden keys. I used 45 and got nothing useful to my class/spec. I got a mediocre grenade mod I'll use until I farm up something better, and a mediocre class mod for a spec I haven't used in 20 levels. I do have 15 million dollars from selling all the useless purples though.

I grabbed this during the Steam Summer sale and just now really dug into it in the past couple weeks.  I loved Borderlands, and so far the same rings true for the sequel.  Seems to have improved upon all the right things from the first game, with some nifty additions.  I've done nothing but single player in the 25 hours or so I have put into the game, and have not longed for any multiplayer at all.  So the balance looks to be just about right.

My only real complaint with the game is that it does not do a good enough job of showing you where you can't go.  I use a vehicle to travel whenever possible and generally take the scenic route for exploration purposes.  Sometimes I'll inexplicably find myself jumping off a cliff onto what looks to be solid ground, but then the respawn hits and the cash gets taken away.  I am addicted to the slot machine so losing cash sucks.  Can't help but think perhaps some better environmental decision would minimize this issue.

Perhaps the greatest compliment I can give the game is that despite the fact I've been playing for 25 hours, it does not feel nearly that long.  I've enjoyed every second.

Hint:  The map usually shows you where the scenery isn't solid ground at all.  It will show up as empty space.  Also, if you see a series of parallel short lines at the edge of the map, it means you'll get shot to pieces by the "god guns" (what I call them, don't know what they are) if you cross over.  Whatever engine they're using is flawed in the sense that what you see is not what is solid and true.  The visual world geometry and the collision geometry are separate--and that's unfortunate.

Glad you're liking it.  I sure stuck with it for a long time, after Dragon Keep came out.  But I haven't even booted it up in a long time.

According to Steam I have about 36 hours invested as of last night.  I feel like I am a good ways into the story.  I am fairly reluctant to go digging to see how far, though.  I've managed to do most if not all the side missions as I've been going along (at least the ones I've found).  Still having a ton of fun with it.

I'm glad the enemies have a little more variety this go round.  That was one of my main knocks against Borderlands.  Despite some of them basically being reskins, they behave differently enough to where it's acceptable.
