Looking for some 60s-70s rock recommendations
« on: Sunday, November 07, 2010, 01:46:10 PM »
In an attempt to find some music that I like, that I can listen to in the company of my family, I've decided the answer is music from the 60s and 70s (maybe early 80s). I dig through my mother's music and there's not much I really like that much, so I'm hoping to find stuff from that era, that she's possibly familiar with, but that I like.

Some good examples of what I'm looking for are Deep Purple's Machine Head album, and the few Black Sabbath songs I've heard: Children of the Grave, Believer, Diary of a Madman, Mr Crowley. Yea, I know some of that is Ozzy, and not Sabbath. Also some is newer I think.

So does anyone have any bands/artists they can recommend for me to check out?

Oh, geez.  Some of the best rock ever came out of that era.

Led Zeppelin?

Hmmm, I dunno. I'm finding some Zeppelin that is ok, sort of what I'm looking for, but it's like 1 or 2 songs (if that many) off each album (been through 6 albums worth of song samples on Amazon). Moody Blues, not even close. As for Jethro Tull, I like Agualung, but I'm not hearing anything else similar. (just browsing YouTube) To be more specific than I was in the first post: I'm not looking for "the best rock of the 60s and 70s". I'm looking for "the heaviest music from the 60s and 70s".

However, if I search for Black Sabbath, just about every song is what I'm looking for. It seems every song is either heavy, our sounds like it was written for a horror themed album.

What I'm wanting to do is put together like 2-3 songs from each artist and have a couple hours worth of music to listen to on random. So I don't want to just grab Machine Head and a bunch of Black Sabbath.

Oh god i hate Zepplin.

Look at the style of what he was seeking, though.  (For the record, I think Zep is brilliant, though not for meant for everyone.)  Personally, I prefer Santana.  Abraxas FTW.

I think I'm gonna need to go closer to the 80s to get what I'm looking for. Motorhead is good, I just need to pick out which songs I want for my compilation. Thin Lizzy's "Cold Sweat" is perfect for the list of songs I'm trying to put together.

It's not that I don't like the other stuff you guys posted. It's more of a thing where I appreciate the music and it's influence, and I'll listen to it if someone puts it on. I'd probably never buy it or turn it on though, because there's other stuff I enjoy more. I probably will put a couple songs in from Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull, but they seem like ones that stand out from the rest by those groups.

From the classes I've taken on the subject, there isn't a lot of heavy stuff from the era you're looking at.  Especially the late 60's and the entirety of the 70's.  A lot of the music is LSD-inspired, honestly.  Hence stuff like The Moody Blues and The Doors where a lot of it is about the ambiance of the songs due to the popularity of stereo headphones and drug usage at the time.

Off the top of my head, the only things I can think of are heavy are Kiss, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, and Led Zepplin.  I'm sure there is other stuff, but it's much easier to find the trippier stuff.

Hendrix is always your best bet.  Don't count out Blue Oyster Cult, though they have a fair variety and it might be hard to pin down what you like versus what you don't.  I like some good hippy shit now and again, but that isn't going to do it for you, so... hmm.  I should really know more about this, but I'm half dead with exhaustion from driving back home from LA last night.

The Black Keys are a good low-key band as well, and though modern, I find they have a very Hendrixy vibe to them, and they're pretty inoffensive yet still very cool.

God damnit Cobra, now I have that fucking Rolling Stones song stuck in my head.  It's one of my favorite Rolling Stones songs.

Wow, thanks for the list Cobra. I have the beginnings of a list going, but I'm not gonna bother with it today probably. I was up all night last night listening to stuff on youtube and last.fm. Lol I'm pretty sure last.fm just uses the current song to pick the next. I told it to play "black sabbath radio" which means it starts on a Black Sabbath song, then picks stuff similar. At soem point it was playing Anthrax and Megadeth.

Here's the list I have so far, though I still need to go through some of your suggestions:

Led Zeppelin 3 - Immigrant Song (from LZ3)
Led Zeppelin 4 - Black Dog (from LZ4)
Led Zeppelin - trampled Under Foot (from Physical Graffitti)
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
Jethro Tull - Locomotive Breath
Thin Lizzy - Cold Sweat
Rolling Stones - Paint It Black
Deep Purple - songs from machine head
Black Sabbath/ozzy osbourne - find something
rainbow?
aerosmith
more rolling stones maybe?

I know Pain It Black isn't quite what I was asking for, but the lyrics strike me as dark and interesting.

I thought of Cream when I thought of Clapton.  He's the cream of Cream, so, heh.

Glad some of you enjoyed my little trip down memory lane.  Good luck with the compilation, W7re.  Hope your parents appreciate it.  If they're at all like me, they will.

Cobra covered a lot of the big ones but here's some more that might fit what you want:

The Who
Howlin Wolf
Jefferson Airplane
Blue Oyster Cult

If you want less classic rock and more Black Sabbath style early metal, try Motorhead, Judas Priest, Dio, Rainbow or Iron Maiden.
