The article wasn't very informative. I assumed that since the virtual dollars in Second Life are tied to real dollars, and the value of the real dollar is sinking, there is an economic crisis in Second Life.

I didn't realize that real people controlled the banks in Second Life. That seems like an unfair advantage. Not that I give a shit about Second Life, but still.

But how will the furries pay for their dongs if they can't get loans?

What the hell are dongs? I'm not up on the furry terminology.

Second Life is unique in that it is the only surviving major economy that doesn't use a fiat currency. Instead, they have a commodity-backed currency, known as the "dong standard."

has anyone here actually played second life? i've been hearing titbits about the seedier side of second life for a while, and have to say i'm intrigued - in a purely scientific way of course. ahem. every time i hear something about this game, my morbid curiosity gets a boost and i may just have to delve in and find out how fucked up it really is.

i remember hearing a story about a craze for getting a particular pet for your avatar - like a fashion accessory. kind of stupid, but not particularly fucked up - the fucked up thing was how you got the pet. some guy had set up some sort of virtual dungeon where female avatars could go in, excite a dragon and then watch as the dragon pinned down and raped their characters. the avatar would then become pregnant and give birth to the "pet" later.

Wired talks about Second Life all the time, acting like everyone's on there.  And I see some websites talk about it.  I've yet to meet someone that says they are on there though.

Yeah, I've noticed that as well.  I wonder if it's just one guy at wired. Anyways, SomethingAwful used to do a weekly article about SL where a bunch of guys on the forum would pretend to be people from Star Trek or Sliders beaming into a new world and making a report on it.  It was pretty funny as they'd usually stumble on some fucked up shit.

No fucking shit.  What a waste of time investigation.

The first I heard of Second Life, was when it wasn't all that big. This Aussie bi chick I knew in univ., was on it all the time.
