Rich in Nothing Are My Kings
« on: Monday, December 04, 2006, 10:48:19 PM »

Been a while in the waiting, but this is the demo for the title track of my magical conceptual album that doesn't yet exist.

It's still rough around the edges, but... the hell do I ever post that isn't?  Opinions are most definitely appreciated.

Pyro, here's your fucking metal.

The poem.
The song.

Quote from:
rich in nothing are my kings
who set my sun that quiet sings
this sun, this soul, this weeping beast
here in my temple ruin lies
as ashes choke Gomorrah skies

ill-lieges see the wealth decreased
imprisoned guilt through bribes released
a golden soul cast off to starve
blossoms rich that crown my head
the carcass rots, the body dead

unemperors grip knives to carve
removing what they then discard
the rest passed on to orphaned thoughts
the carrion to fill their need
they on my flesh forever feed

my shell soon emptied by the lot
with all the worthless offal brought
to children of my lust and rage
as still the sun now dying sings
that rich in nothing are my kings

I really dig it. Though I dont think I got the whole thing, it cut off at the end. Is the song length 5:15?

Yeah, it's 5:15.  Just fades out pretty quickly at the end.

I redownloaded, that fixed it. But yea, really really good one. Probably one of my favorites you've done.

Thank you both!  I've written a number of songs in single evenings over the last couple weeks, this is the latest.  I wrote it last night, recorded a little... then spent a couple hours laying it down again tonight.  Took me a while to get the tones straight and mixing it was kind of a bitch, but it came out pretty good for a rough cut.  What took the most time was programming all the drums.  I haven't actually programmed anything in quite a while, it felt good!  And sounds so much better... just takes so damn long!

So listening to it today I definitely think there need to be some major edits.  The beginning sounds overly convoluted to me, but by the end of the song the extra additions sound fine... so I think I need to start it a bit more simply and drop the little "background lead" thing until the repetition.  And I didn't realize how distorted things got toward the rhythm part two thirds in.  When I do a better recording I'll have to watch my tone... the only settings I really like on this POD can sometimes lead to some really fuzzy mutes.  And obviously I have to actually write/fix most of the other frilly stuff, but I usually put that crap off for years and then never end up doing it, heh.  I suck.
