Hockey Pool Time
« on: Thursday, September 28, 2006, 11:04:15 PM »
So, we just did our picks for our first pool.  Sadly there are trades involved (something I don't like), and I went defense and goalie way to early so my forwards are a bit weak, but here's what I have (format: 8 fwds, 2 D, 1 g):

1.) Heatly.  I don't know...7th pick.  It was basically Heatly, Staal, or Briere.

2.) Malkin.  Very risky.  He's out 2-4 weeks right now and he's a rookie.  Yet, he's almost garunteed a Calder and he's going to be getting a lot of time on what could be one of the best PP lines in the league next year.  I probalby picked him too early, but there were a lot of people plaing and I felt like taking the risk (a 7th round crosby pick like last year seemed unlikely)

3.) Gionta.  Huge points last season.

4.) Brodeur. Kind of explains itself.

5.) Zubov.  Same as above

6.) McCabe.  I expect good things again this year.

7.) Yashin.  Probably the best forward available at the time.

8.) Satan.  Same as above.

9.)  Semin.  Lighting it up in preseason and will probably share some icetime with Ovechkin.  I like Points.

10.) Nagy.  Good, but total bitch.

11.) Morrow.  Last pick, might as well.

I don't know.  If Malkin and Semin pull through it could turn up huge...especially if my defensive picks pan out like I hope.

I can't believe you didn't pick Staal. He's amazing. Of course, I may be a bit jaded, living in NC....

Here are my picks...

1.   (4)   J. Thornton   C - no-brainer, I'm surprised he didn't get picked 1st or 2nd
2.   (9)   M. Naslund   LW - probably a mistake on my part... but he's one of my favourite players
3.   (16)   J. Cheechoo   RW - should complement Thornton well
4.   (21)   R. Luongo   G - needed a good goalie this time, last year I got stuck with DiPietro
5.   (28)   N. Lidstrom   D - needed a good defenceman
6.   (33)   P. Datsyuk   C - because he's awesome
7.   (40)   L. Nagy   LW - even though he ruined my fantasy team last year b/c of his injury
8.   (45)   H. Lundqvist   G - because two good goalies is never a bad idea
9.   (52)   M. Schneider   D
10.   (57)   A. Hemsky   RW
11.   (64)   V. Toskala   G
12.   (69)   S. Gomez   C
13.   (76)   T. Holmstrom   LW - I was heavily critized for this... but he scores a lot of goals
14.   (81)   S. Sullivan   RW
15.   (88)   D. Boyle   D
16.   (93)   J. Spacek   D
17.   (100)   D. Sedin   LW - H. Sedin was taken
18.   (105)   M. Sundin   C
19.   (112)   P. Boucher   D
20.   (117)   M. Svatos   RW
21.   (124)   J. Bouwmeester   D
22.   (129)   R. Lang   C
23.   (136)   R. DiPietro   G - if he's worth $67.5 million, then he can't be that bad
24.   (141)   D. Vyborny   RW
25.   (148)   P. Kubina   D
26.   (153)   S. Hartnell   LW
