Starbreeze is currently at work to reinvent some classic EA-owned IP (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3166472)

I'm going to make a guess at Road Rash.
-
Maybe Starbreeze will be working on System Shock III...?
-
hahaha that would be awesome. Starbreeze are capable too.
-
hahaha that would be awesome. Starbreeze are capable too.
Starbreeze sure would be capable to work on a SS3, I'd think...
-
Could be a Bond game too.
-
Damn. Starbreeze is possibly the one company that wouldn't make me sad if I found out they were going to do SS3. I really like Starbreeze and have ever since I played Enclave, and I think they've got the FPS chops to actually improve that franchise. My first reaction to this thread was "ugh", but now I'm actually getting a little excited. I fucking hate EA and all, but... something cool could come out of this.
Just please God don't let it be Bond.
-
Maybe Starbreeze is bringing back that Mutant League Football....
(Seriously, I doubt that one.)
-
General Chaos, on the other hand, would just be rad.
-
General Chaos would be amazing!
Given Starbreezes track record I'd guess it's going to be an action game (rather than sports or racing), but Road Rash seems very plausible.
-
I'd love a new Road Rash game if it were done well.
I loved 1-3 on the genesis.
-
I loved the original Road Rash. I had all of them at one point, including the 3DO version, and eventually the PC port. Two of the songs from the 3DO version are in Burnout Paradise (Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" and another I can't name off the top of my head like that). The game is simply credited to Electronic Arts. They were a positive force 15 years ago, but I wonder who really is behind the 16-bit technology. It was quite a leap for the Genny.
Edit: Hmm. Is there a connection here? (http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/ea-bringing-back-road-rash/?biz=1) :-\
-
Starbreeze needs to get their heads together again for another Riddick game, cause you know, Escape from Butcher Bay was fanfuckingtastic.
-
Does anyone really think that a modern Road Rash would be any fun at all? I can't imagine how.
Edit: Sorry, "Rash," not "Rage."
-
Does anyone really think that a modern Road Rage would be any fun at all? I can't imagine how.
I don't know this Road Rage that you speak of, but a new Road Rash would be fucking awesome if done right.
-
It's called Burnout now, Revenge and Paradise. Cars, not bikes. Funny you should say "Road Rage". That's what some of the events are called in Paradise. How many opponents can you take down before time expires?
-
I'm just picturing riding around on motorcycles hitting people with chains. It was dumb when the game came out. It certainly won't be any better now.
-
Yeah, I knew that "Road Rage" was a slip-up/typo, Freudian or whatever. It was a good launchpad to bring up the Burnout games as the sort of spiritual successors to the Road Rash concept--races and fights in civilian vehicles on the streets. I don't know if an evolution of Road Rash would work today or not. I would like to see a good attempt.
-
I fail to see exactly how the game mechanic was ever 'dumb'. It was a pretty original idea back in the day. Course, I enjoyed the games immensely. Basically if they just released an updated road rash game and didn't change much aside from fleshing a few things out and taking advantage of some new tech i'd be very happy.
It's games like this that don't need to become overly ambitious if remade. It also needs to stay in the right hands to stay true to the originals. I hate shitty updates...I'm looking at you Final Fight: Streetwise.
-
The game mechanic wasn't dumb. The entire game was dumb. I found it pretty lame. There were a lot better games out.
-
We're talking about the same thing, right? 16-bit original Road Rash from around 1991. I agree that the later versions were not anywhere near as big a deal. I thought it was terrific at the time.
-
The original was pretty cool when it came out, I'll agree. I thought the rest of them were sort of lame, though, since it was really a one-trick pony for me. The PC/PS version soundtrack I still have lying around somewhere, but yeah, I just never got into that one. That isn't to say I wouldn't be interested in a new one, though. It would definitely have to be more than the old ones, but it could still be fun. The last game was corny in a pretty good way, as I recall.
-
I still remember the funky style the 3DO (or in my case Sega Saturn) version had. It'd be nice to see the wacky stuff again:

I'm just trying to visualize a revival.
I just played a bit of MotoGP, and sometimes on the track I wish I could kick or chain-whip other bikers.
-
Oh, yes. Memories. I was so disappointed in the 3DO, and even Road Rash, which was just about the best game on that system (sad, I know) reminded me of how far below expectations it was. All those funky images were completely static. Besides the dated game graphics, the only animation was these cheesy FMVs we got as an intro and as cutscenes when a race was over.
WTF happened to Road Rash? (http://www.tweak3d.net/forums/articles/wtf-happened-road-rash-31340)
If we ever do see a revival, it will hopefully look more like this (http://www.criteriongames.com/burnout/paradise/mediadownloads/images/1.jpg), except with bikes instead of cars.
-
Looks like it probably will be road rash. Sorry scottws!

:-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Wow, I should have bought a lotto ticket.
-
If that's true, it's really fucking stupid. I mean I'm not against Road Rash being remade at all, but I'm completely against wasting Starbreeze's talent on something like that. I can't imagine that's really true... maybe they're bringing the game back and Starbreeze is working on something else?
I know they could do justice to the game, and maybe it's just me, but I don't think it's worth their time. Another EFBB or Darkness game would make me a lot happier.
-
I, for one, welcome it. What I played of the Darkness was fantastic, and Pyro swears by Riddick. This means maybe they're capable of making a good Road Rash game and not fucking it up.
Sebastian Bach cock rock is just icing on the cake.
-
I was positive it would be System Shock 3.
-
Yeah, hearing Road Rash after thinking about Starbreeze taking on SS3 pretty much ensured there was no way I'd be interested in the former. Of course, basically anything that they could announce would pale in comparison to how I'd feel about them doing SS3, so I guess in the end this was bound to happen.
-
I still think there may be a SS3 announcement somewhere, because it would fit in with EA's mode of operation.
-
Roadrash could be fun if it was more like Burnout and less like....Road Rash.
I do agree with Scott to a point, although I used to like the games quite a bit. The thing was that there really wasn't much there. By the time the PSX version came around the fighting sucked so much that I'd basically just play it to race and occasionally kick my competition in front of an oncoming car.
I'm optimistic, but if they fuck up either component, it's going to be pretty lame.

New rumor here.
It's possible that Syndicate might be the franchise being reinvented for EA. (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=199521)
EA at work on new Syndicate
Friday 17-Oct-2008 5:44 PM Bullfrog classic is in the works, source tells CVG
25 Comments
EA is set to reveal a brand new entry in Bullfrog's cult classic Syndicate series, CVG has been told.
Cast your mind back to when Starbreeze struck that deal with EA to resurrect one of the publisher's "classic franchises" and Syndicate was hotly tipped. Starbreeze definitely sounds like a good fit for the gritty cyberpunk universe as well.
No more details were offered by our secret agent, but to see a current-gen remake of the PC and PSOne RTS - which still has a cherished place in many a veteran gamer's heart - would no doubt please many.
In case you're wondering what we're on about, the original Syndicate was released in 1993 and later followed up in 1996 by Syndicate Wars.
The game put players in charge of a militant global corporation, and tasked them with leading cyborg agents around a gritty cyberpunk world rescuing captured allies and assassinating rival syndicate executives. It was awesome.
We'll let you know if our deepthroats are on the money. In the meantime, which genre would you like to see a modern day Syndicate sliced into?
-
Awesome. I loved Syndicate....
-
Okay, that wouldn't be bad at all. I could totally see Starbreeze doing something kickass with that. That would be pretty exciting.
-
Syndicate was pretty cool. I remember Syndicate Wars more though. That was developed by Bullfrog at the time, right?

Yeah.
Molyneux was recently asked what game he wished he could do a remake or sequel to, Syndicate was his answer.
It was in one of the interviews for Fable 2; it's somewhere in that thread.
I'll go find it.
-
Wow, now a revitalization of Syndicate I could get on board with. That game kicked all kinds of ass.
-
I never played either of them.

Yup its Syndicate, here's the trailer. (http://www.giantbomb.com/syndicate-debut-trailer/17-4972/)
Yea it's another first person shooter but that's no surprise since that's what Starbreeze makes. It looks really cool though. I always thought Starbreeze could make a good Deus Ex sequel but this is like the next best thing they could do since the universes are both cyberpunk. I would definitely like to check this out.
Also we should rename this thread to be the Syndicate thread.
-
I never saw or played Syndicate, but that trailer looks great! I hope this turns out as good as that looked.
-
That trailer was awesome.
This is now the Syndicate thread.
I'll rename this.
-
Awesome. Very Deus Ex-y.
I love Starbreeze's work in general.
-
One of my favorite games as a kid.
-
Check out this video showing off some co-op! (http://www.gameinformer.com/games/syndicate/b/xbox360/archive/2011/11/15/co-op-gameplay-video-inspires-confidence-in-syndicate.aspx)
Certainly looks promising!
-
One of my favorite games as a kid.
Mine too. I never could figure out how to recruit people though.
-
A bit of an underwhelming launch for a fantastic title from Starbreeze.
Started playing the singleplayer campaign today and it is pretty awesome.
-
Damn that's out today? I knew it was soon, just didn't know it was now. Let us know how it goes.
Edit: Whoa, Jeff on Giantbomb gives it 5 stars, interesting. (http://www.giantbomb.com/syndicate/61-30734/reviews/)
-
Nice, I just posted that review on Facebook as well. The game is phenomenal! For lack of better words, I'm gonna bluntly describe it as "Deus Ex for hardcore shooter fans" though that is a pretty harsh description.
Gonna spend more time with it and give further impressions.
-
Damn you people for making me want another game. I still have Skyrim and Deus Ex: Human Revolution in shrink wrap and I don't know when I'll get to them. My PC is still packed away.

Oh, this is funny...hehe. (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/02/24/ascii-what-you-did-syndicate-devs-message-to-pirates/)
Starbreeze left a .NFO in Syndicate PC's game-folder as their message to pirates.
-
Yeah, i spotted that on the first install. It was amusing :) Good ASCII art too ;D

Starbreeze Studios was raided today over "insider trading" and an arrest was made:
https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2018-12-05-arrest-made-in-starbreeze-office-raid
Keep in mind, Starbreeze really hasn't been Starbreeze since the core team members (that worked on Riddick games, The Darkness, Syndicate FPS) left after Syndicate FPS reboot to go form MachineGames (to work on the rebooted Wolfenstein series).
-
I had no idea they made Payday. But yeah, they're kind of not what they were. I loved them as a studio originally, I don't necessarily care what they do or don't do anymore.
Also, I don't know who the fuck ever expected a Walking Dead game to do well. That ship sailed long ago.

Overkill Studios made Payday.
Basically, the original Starbreeze core left to form MachineGames (and then many followed later) b/c Overkill pretty much merged w/ Starbreeze.
Starbreeze....well, wasn't Starbreeze anymore, after Syndicate FPS.
