Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods -- Update: Very vicious 1Up review of a D- added
« on: Monday, April 14, 2008, 01:55:35 PM »
So, Gothic 3 will expand, but we do not know who's developing it...

Gothic 3 Expansion Announced [April 14, 2008, 10:20 am ET] - Viewing Comments
JoWooD announces Gothic 3 – Forsaken Gods, an expansion for the RPG sequel due by the end of this year that will bridge the gap between Gothic 3 and Gothic 4. Gothic 3 was developed by Pluto 13/Piranha Bytes and Gothic 4 is being developed by Spellbound Entertainment, but the developer of this expansion is not clear from the announcement:

"Liezen, Austria, April 14th 2008; JoWooD Productions announces the official Add-On for the award winning roleplaying game Gothic 3. Gothic 3 – Forsaken Gods will answer many open questions and guarantee a seamless step to Gothic 4. Once more you take on the role of the nameless Hero and again you have to raise your sword in anger to save the world of Gothic. On your journey you will meet old friends – but be careful, some old alliances may not have lasted the test of time….

JoWood is working on the expansion and the feedback from fans is extremely important to the developer of Gothic 3 - Forsaken Gods. The game designer and developer are studying the Gothic message boards each day and will incorporate as many of the fan-wishes as possible while working on the extension.

The release of Gothic 3 - Forsaken Gods is planned for Q4 2008. Further information will follow soon!

We knew before the fallout w/ Pluto 13 AKA Piranha Bytes and JoWood, that Pluto 13 was working on a G3 Expansion. Then, the fallout b/t the two companies happened (Jowood and Pluto 13) b/c of the lack of patches Pluto 13 released, so since JoWood acquired the Gothic IP rights, JoWood picked Spellbound to start work on Gothic 4. Then, JoWood had Spellbound work on fixing/patching Gothic 3 right along w/ the G3-Community that was working on fixing stuff for G3.

So, who's working on this G3 Expansion?
We'll just have to wait and find out, I guess...

I really can't believe after all the negative criticism Gothic 3 was slapped with (namely to due tremendous amounts of bugs and performance issues), there's going to be an expansion -- especially around 2 years after G3 was originally dropped.

And especially w/ Gothic 4 being worked on already...

Makes no sense to me either.  I can't believe they're bothering with a 4th.  The series had a strong start, but after 2 I was very much done with this series.  3 didn't interest me in the least.

Makes no sense to me either.
If they are trying to get forgiveness from fans of Gothic by releasing Gothic 3 Expansion, they probably won't get any with an expansion. Fans still want their original G3 game fixed more than it was. Gothic 3 (Original) still is a mess that is still being patched by the G3-Community and Spellbound, as we speak -- the load times still are not good, the in-game performance is still all over the place (but better than it was before), and there's probably still a good deal of more bugs to iron out.

And JoWood is now wanting fans to pay for an expansion to what is an already broken game?

Quote

I can understand making a 4th game, since they are getting someone new to make it. And since there are still fans of the series.

I hope Spellbound does a good job w/ it, myself -- and doesn't have too huge of a scope like Pluto 13 did w/ Gothic 3. I think G3 is too big for its own good, since it was released obviously way to early out the gate.

Gothic 1 was great, no doubt about it -- had an interesting story, premise, and everything.

Gothic 2 was good, but lacked the intrigue of the original. Plus, a lot of the flaws of the original were even way more obvious, this time around; since they were fixed.

Gothic 3 is just still mess that still needs to fixed w/ some more patches...There's a good RPG to be had, under that mess...but, they need to fix that mess, first.

This is an excerpt from the new Gothic 4: Arcania preview on GameSpot.

I put it here b/c it mentions the upcoming G3: Forsaken Gods expansion due out later this year.

Quote
...
Dreamcatcher will release a Gothic 3 expansion later this year. Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods will bridge the gap between the end of Gothic 3 and the beginning of Arcadia, offering 20-25 hours of new gameplay.
Well, adding 20-25 hours worth of new content sounds good for an RPG expansion.

Quote
Of course, Forsaken Gods is being extensively bug-tested so you should be able to play through seamlessly without experience any of the crippling errors found in Gothic 3.
Hopefully, this expansion will also fix lots and lots of G3's still-existing bugs and issues -- which is what is being mentioned here. I'll believe it when I see it, myself.

Probably would lean more towards the "Extra bugs" part...

We finally know who's working on G3: Forsaken Gods.
Trine Game Studios is developing it, who also is working on the next Guild game.

Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods - Developer Revealed
by Gorath, 17:01:11

JoWooD used the start of the Games Convention in Leipzig to reveal the developer responsible for Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods. It´s the Indian company Trine Game Studios. They´re also working on the next The Guild product.

G3: Forsaken Gods will be a stand-alone add-on based on Gothic 3 technology. The story is written by Spellbound to ensure a smooth transition to Gothic 4.

why

B/c JoWood is trying to make money off the franchise still.

Supposedly, the story for G3: Forsaken Gods is the complete explanation for how and why The Nameless Hero turns basically into the King and villain for the upcoming Arcania: A Gothic Tale (Gothic 4).

I dunno, but Gothic 3 (Vanilla) still needs some fixing -- namely quicker load times and stopping the stuttering issue would help, first and foremost; more so than anything. Fixing questing bugs and other bugs would also help matters, too -- they've already stomped a lot of those bugs out already, but there's still plenty more that needs stomping.

Sorry I wasn't listening. Can you say that again?

We're still waiting on (Community/Spellbound) Patch 1.7 for Gothic 3 (Vanilla) -- which was announced like months ago, which would add more fixes, issue stomping, and whatnot.

G3: Forsaken Gods is the last story as The Nameless Hero, since it is about him taking over and becoming King.

In Gothic 4, Nameless Hero is the main villain of Gothic 4. You will play as some other new hero in that.

Jowood Apologizes To Fans For Unsatisfactory Gothic 3 Expansion!

Quote
"Forsaken Gods is full of bugs, just as the main game was." This sentence is a direct quote from a German press release distributed by Gothic 3 publisher, Jowood.

"Fans are complaining about the poor quality of the game and JoWooD felt that it's time to release a statement in this regard:
First of all we want to thank the community for showing their support and we also want to thank those who have chosen to buy the game. Unfortunatey, it wasn't possible for us to release a game that could fully satisfy you, for different reasons. The game was released this year because that was what we and the community desired."

"JoWooD and Trine have worked under a lot of pressure, and to repair some of the mistakes we released the game with a patch, hoping to make it better. Michael Kairat, Executive Producer of JoWooD said: We are now getting the full 'bill' from the community for our mistakes. JoWooD Productions would like to present their apologies to the fans for releasing an unsatisfying game."

"Furthermore Michael Kairat explained that in the next days a new patch will be released which will improve the quality of the game. It will be available for download on JoWooD's Official Website. We also want to make a content patch which will include opinions, suggestions and wishes from the community. After the feedback from the community, we will release a statement regarding the patch. Toghether with Spellbound we will make early beta tests for Arcania: A Gothic Tale, to be sure that past mistakes will not be repeated."

"JoWooD admits their mistake, and will prevent it from happening again, says Michael Kairat on behalf of the entire team."

1Up gives it a D-, in this VERY vicious review from Eric Neigher.

Quote
The only reason that this didn't get an "F" is the original music, which is very nice. Not excellent, mind you, but very nice -- and the lone thing I latched on to for sanity while trying to review the otherwise completely putrescent Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods.
Ouch.

Quote
For those unfamiliar with Gothic 3 -- for which Forsaken Gods is a standalone expansion, -- it's a third-person RPG with a look and feel similar to Ultima IX. Yeah, Ultima IX. I intentionally chose a game from nearly 10 years ago because that's just how outdated Gothic 3's engine feels. By and large, what you're getting here is a very been-done, over-the-shoulder fantasy-RPG. If you liked the original Gothic 3, you'll probably dig this expansion. But let's be honest: Nobody intelligent enough to read this far into my review would have enjoyed Gothic 3. I'm just keeping it real, people.
The bugs and technical issues galore keep me from finishing G3. There's a good game to be had, if they could sort that junk out.

Hehe that was harsh :P and probably deserved considering the formal apology from JoWood earlier.

I'm not overly optimistic but I am hopeful that Gothic 4 (or Arcadia: A Gothic Tale) sates the fans of the Gothic universe.

What is it with JoWood anyway?  They just have the worst track record, don't they?  I remember I played Silent Storm.  I liked the game, but wow was it buggy.  About 20 hours in, my main character would keel over and die for no reason on the same turn.  I even loaded a save prior to the mission in question and it still happened.

When I went to get support, I found basically they have no technical support.  All they have is community support and the "tech support" forum for Silent Storm consisted of like three posts, after I posted mine.  And the prior one was posted more than six months earlier.  I never did get a response...

I don't know what it is but they definitely suck at the support end. With Gothic (all of the Gothic games) I could find better support boards in German, so I had my cousin help me out since he is German, but it was still community support not official tech support.

JoWood is just not very good at releasing stable games and not good with their technical support -- never really has been, in the past. You can look at the track record of most of the games they have published, either the developers have done most of the patching (many times WAY after the fact -- i.e. see Arx Fatalis), Jowood wants the developing company to do a huge patch and it winds up never released (i.e. Gothic 3), and/or the game community takes over to fix the issues (i.e. Gothic 3 again).
