A California assembly woman, Lori Saldana, wants to HAULT spyware being put into games, which would target such things as "in-game ads" from BF 2142,for starters... (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/18/eas-spyware-targeted-by-ca-lawmaker/)

EA's "spyware" targeted by CA lawmaker

Saldana (D)California Assembly woman Lori Saldana could soon introduce a bill into state legislature that would halt companies like EA from including spyware technologies in their games. Battlefield 2142 has come under scrutiny for requiring players to install software that collects personal data from users' PCs and transfers it to foreign servers for advertising purposes. Consumers aren't warned of the adware application until opening the game box.

Beth Givens of the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse calls EA's methods "particularly vile," prompting Saldana to consider legislation. "A parental notice telling them private information might be at risk is important to have," Saldana told a local news station.

Interesting.  A lawmaker actually do something for the American people?  I'm about to fall out of my fucking chair.  Seriously.

Signed.

The in-game ads don't really bother me all that much.  But the spyware and the fact that EA puts out such a shitty product in the first place does.  I'm sorry, EA, I'm not paying to be a beta tester for a game, much less one that will never see a 1.0 release.

I'm telling you, get used to it, because this is just the beginning. Look at how much shit advertising has infiltrated in the past ten years, this is just another step. In five years, this will be common in online games. Although it still fucking blows. Signed.

I agree with Ghandi. Looking at it from a marketing perspective they'd be stupid not to take advantage of the venue. The only hope we have is that legal actions like the one mentioned will keep it legitimate and non-intrusive.

The franchise name BF and Beta seem to go hand-in-hand; fits perfect for EA.

They should name the next BF game this: BF Beta....
