This thing is so fucking topheavy you can barely even use it. I hate it when I have to update things and all my nice old, normal, simple programs get updated with like 25 buttons that I don't want or need.
Any good alternatives to this?
-
I use GAIM.
-
Eh... I hate GAIM. Just little things about that one that bug the hell out of me, like how you can't run it in the background since it has to just be "minimized".
-
Yea it's bloated, but I still use it because all my friends are on MSN.
-
What is up with all these communication programs becoming too bloated? The classic example is ICQ. When ICQ first came about, it was light yet fun to use. There is a fine line, a balance that must be achieved.
Look at google talk. It has just about nothing, but I love it!
-
Yes, everyone switch to google talk.
-
I use skype a lot. Hardly on msn unless someone tells me to go online.
-
Figures that Google would have a talk program now. They have fucking everything. Eventually it'll turn into the same shit we have now probably, but... maybe it'd be cool.
What say the rest of you?
-
Ahhh ICQ... the good old days. Yea all my friends slowly switched over to MSN since ICQ was going to shit a couple years ago.
-
I use Trillian and love it, isn't a memory hog and it can work in the background while connecting to AIM, YIM, and MSN at the same time.
-
I just use the plain old Windows Messenger that comes with XP still. Don't go download the fancy version.
... I guess if we have to move to Google I'd be willing to, but Windows Messenger is still great.
-
Im using gaim since most of my friends use AIM and alot of you use MSN. But if you guys went to google talk Id be forced to use 2 messenger programs since gaim doesnt have a google talk extension yet.
-
I miss the old Quake days when all we needed was IRC and ICQ. Fucking technology.
-
Pyro, you can connect to GTalk with GAIM. Google tells you how (http://www.google.com/support/talk/bin/answer.py?answer=24073).
Trillian is a good client, so is Miranda (http://www.miranda-im.org/). Whatever...I'm on every network anyway, so whatever you guys decide.
-
I almost forgot, GTalk might not be a good choice. No group/conference chat...yet.
More multi-protocols for Que to try: Intan-t (http://www.interactiveni.com/imsite/imfreeware.htm) and aMSN (http://amsn.sourceforge.net/).

I'm still on an older version of msn
I agree that msn live messenger is bloated
Skype? isn't that the talking over internet program? I want a bluetooth headset to go with my bluetooth capable laptop... maybe that will be the program that will make it worth it
wanna chat raisa? lol
-
Thanks, idol. I'll check it out tomorrow when I'm not dead tired.
-
Yeah, Jennie was using MSN 7.5 Messenger, but after I reformatter her computer, she had to get Live Messenger. She hates it.

I frickin' hate MSN (or Windows Live Messenger). The only reason I use it is because back in the day it was a way better alternative to ICQ. Now everyone else is on it. I used Trillian for a while, but certain lacking features pretty much sucked me right back to MSN.
Skype is pretty cool, and it pretty much has all of MSN's features. I pretty much reserve its use for voice calls or phone calls. It's also pretty good for conference calls.
-
Skype has regular text chat as well, right?

Yes

Old MSN plus mess.be patch is awesome. They also have apatch for Live Messenger and that should get rid of all the crap for you.
-
Maybe we should switch. MSN has had this habbit of kicking me off for no good reason, without warning, or without even showing that I'm offline sometimes. I'll go to send a message then and it'll tell me that I can't send something because I'm not signed on and THEN the window will go to what it should look like... so then I have to wonder how long I've actually been offline.
-
Anyone who used Trillian before version 3 came out should give it a try now, its got a lot more features and less bugs than version 2.x had. I used to use AIM and MSN and hated both of them, especially AIM. I switched to Trillian and haven't switched back since, the only drawback to Trillian is that very rarely it has trouble direct connecting with people who are using older AIM/MSN clients, mainly AIM, so if the person you are talking to isn't using the most up to date AIM client, there may be slight problems with direct connecting/sending files, but again it is very rare when that happens. There is also a ton of skins available for it via the official site and Deviant Art if you are picky about that kind of thing.
Skype is a pretty neat program for chatting with one person via text or voice, but I have seen it have problems with voice conferences, that might have just been user error on the people I was talking to though. I used to use it for chatting while playing Star Wars Galaxies but switched to Teamspeak since it seems more suited for gaming chat.
-
I used mess.be on windows live messenger for my laptop
goodbye bloat
-
The main mess.be patch is pretty awesome. Using it now and I feel much better.
-
Wow, the Mess patch (Generation 5) has done wonders! My nice and clean messenger is back!
-
All this talk about "we should switch" makes me sad. Obviously people talk, but not me.
-
Dont worry, I'm never on anyway.

Hey what is your MSN ID? Also what is your gtalk ID?
-
I really only talk to Sy regularly. Everybody else just kinda' talks to me when they feel like it. I'm online a lot, and I'm always down to chat, but I generally don't say hi to people. I always sort of figure if they wanted to talk to me, they would. Which is a stupid way of looking at it, but there you have it.
-
Heh, I do the same as que. I dont tend to start conversations.
If I'm online, there are 2 reasons...
1) I want to talk to someone or am talking to someone
2) I forgot to close the program and am playing a game, so thanks for messaging and getting me killed!
-
Hmmm... I regularly talk to my university friends including Xessive. Plus it is easy to talk to family all over the world. I talk to Raisa when she is not on a mission. I speak to Kams from time to time. I bug Matt aka Sirean for gaming advise from time to time.
I speak with cools regularly but unfortunately I haven't really opened my MSN in months because of work.
I know that GPW cybers with Ren regularly or something.
-
Im the same as Que and idol. Its just that everytime I start a chat with someone I kind of worry if im coming off as one of those annoying people that randomly messages you at the wrong time.
-
Ok, that's a lie....I don't even log into my msn account with you guys on it anymore since he tried to cyber with me like two years ago.
Hoob was there....he knows.
-
I'm almost always on msn... I'm in the same boat with Que, if people wanna talk to me then fine, but I only talk to people when I have something to talk about. Don't usually just randomly message.
Unless I'm drunk, then I randomly message to my hearts content making a fool out of myself.
-

So it was a threesome?
I get what you guys mean though. I want to send messages from time to time, but don't want to be a nuisance.
