Tell me this doesn't look awesome. (http://www.panslabyrinth.com/)
I guess it was shown at a film festival already and it's been reviewing extremely well. (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/10006709-pans_labyrinth/)
Gads I want to see this.
-
Oh my, that does look very sweet. Its nice to see Del Toro doing something new, because the last time he did it was really good (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0256009).
-
Looks great. Can't watch the trailer, though... Firefox won't install whatever plugin it supposedly needs.
-
wow... looks insanely cool beyond cool

Same here. Perfect opportunity to say again how much Apple sucks.
Edit: Get the movie from the cache, and play it with VLC Media Player 0.8.5. It uses its own internal libraries to decode everything. No dealing with Quicktime.
It does look like something I have to see.
-
That looks orgasmic. Something for us geeks. And yea Pyro, Guillermo del Toro kicks ass. This movie got some critical acclaim at Cannes too.
-
Que and Sy saw it the other day and I really really want to see it.
*waits for impressions*
-
We actually saw it today. I'd been planning on posting a little review, but just didn't get around to it.
In a word: fucking amazing. Believe the hype.
That said, nobody's kidding when they say the movie is super intense and very dismal. That isn't to say there aren't other elements to it, because there certainly are, but be prepared to doubt the motives of several key characters, watch a lot of people die, and (unless you're a heartless robot like Sy and myself) cry. It isn't the most dismal movie ever, and there are some touching elements and stuff alongside everything else, but it's a very raw movie. That said, it's just pure wonder. It meshes up very well with a lot of my life philosophies and really spoke to my heart on both comfortable and uncomfortable levels.
It does have its flaws, but they're few and far between. The CG and what I assume is some costume work are all really well done, and the movie's got one of the coolest and most original horror monsters I've seen in *years* (made even cooler by way of context). The acting is great. The sets are great. The mood is all over the place. Just really good stuff on the whole.
So while I definitely recommend it, don't go in expecting an easy ride. It's a very difficult movie, which you'll see right from the outset, but one that rewards you for your trouble. There's more historical fiction than actual fantasy, but it's mixed beautifully and is used to actually make a point (one, I might add, that's more than a little subjective, its definition depending very much on interpretation). If you're taking a date, make sure they're ready for quite a bit of violence and some sadness, but by all means get to a theater and see this while its still on the big screen. You'll definitely regret it if you don't.
Julia didn't make it with us because she was feeling terrible, so I've already got plans to see it a second time with her.
-
I need to see this as well, hopefully there is a theater close by that is playing it.
-
Limited release now so it might be hard to find, but I don't know if they're doing a bigger showing later. Would be good to find out.

This movie rocks so hard
It rocked my socks into next year (2008)
-
It's out here Kams?
-
Looks like a very interesting film. I'll definitely add it to my list of movie I need to see.
-
It's out here Kams?
Not in North Vancouver... infidel
-
I...I don't live in North Van.
-
Nor anywhere in the lower mainland! ... infidel...
-
Maybe the best movie I've seen in a long time.
-
This movie's audio is in Spanish and has English Subtitles, right?
-
Correct.
-
Holy shit yes, this movie was amazing, I would love to see it again sometime, it needs to hurry up and come out on DVD.
-
I'm going to see it today. I might do a double header with Letters from Iwo Jima.
-
Nice. Careful, though. This one left me pretty exhausted, not to mention somewhat emotionally drained.
-
You're right. I only ended up doing Pan. It was awesome. The happiest/saddest film all at once. I loved it a lot. Beautiful.
-
I finally saw this masterpiece. Definitely my favorite movie of the year.
-
Same here. I can't wait to get it on DVD. Julia didn't see it with us and that makes me very sad.

Oh yes -- I can't wait for this one to hit DVD.
-
I saw it last night. It was amazing, to the say the least. I still feel shaken up by it.
-
Since this is a Del Toro thread, basically...
I'm curious.....
Did anybody see The Devil's Backbone???
-
I got this on DVD rental.
Has anyone seen this yet....?
-
There was another thread about it somewhere. It's an absolutely amazing movie. One of the best I've seen in a long while. It's just beautiful. Much love to, Del Toro.
-
I thought I posted in this thread when the movie first came out, guess not. I saw it in theaters and it was awesome. I am hoping to pick up the 2 disc Special Edition DVD soon.
-
Just got through watching it.
Tragic.
Gripping.
Sad.
Powerful.
Absolutely outstanding movie, on so many levels.
-
There has to be another thread around here. I know I went on and on about it at some point.
EDIT - Bingo. Threads merged.
-
Bought it since mom wanted to see it. Havent watched it yet, went with Children of Men as well since it seemed like netflix was never going to send it.
-
I guess I'm the only one here who didn't like this movie?
-
I will watch this soon because I am at a friends house who has it. I WILL LET YOU KNOW WHAT I THOUGHT OF IT MY DARLINGS
-
Wow, that was a great movie. I'm all sad and happy at the same time.
-
I cried like a baby.
-
ehhhh.... this movie was okay... a bit overhyped.
-
I cried like a baby.
Que cried?!?!?!?!?
I'm....shocked....
-
I cry at movies all the time. Nearly every time I listen to certain music, too. Just because I'm a homicidal maniac doesn't mean I don't have emotions.

Wow, I'm actually...shocked....
Just because I'm a homicidal maniac doesn't mean I don't have emotions.
You're so.....complicated.
So, in games like Painkiller, do you cry for every pixel you slaughter???
'Cause that'd be a hell of a lot of crying, y'know.... ;)
-
Why would you be shocked that a poet and musician gets emotionally engaged with fiction and drama?
-
You do realize who your asking this to right?
-
I didn't know you were a poet and a musician, I can feel sorry for other people, but I don't get emotional anymore.
-
Wow, that was a great movie. I'm all sad and happy at the same time.
Hahaha yea. The way the movie ended made me feel that way too. It was sad, yet it is kind of happy as well.
I loved this movie.
-
I've been putting off watching this basically because of this thread. I don't want to feel emotionally drained for now.

Hehe, it's a very emotionally draining movie. You feel exhausted after watching it.
-
I will find a day when I am not so fucking stressed to watch it. It is in the theaters here.
-
I just got done seeing this. It was amazing. By far my favorite movie of the year.
-
I'm not used to seeing such excellence in production values and special effects in Spanish films. It felt incongruous to hear and understand the dialog in something other than English. The film is too depressing for me, though. I don't think I'll be watching it again.
The name of the film is El laberinto del fauno, which translates to The Faun's Labyrinth. I wonder whose idea it was to bring up Pan, who does not appear in this film, faun though he may be.
Edit: Changed "fawn" to "faun". Not sure if it was wrong, but avoids confusion with deer.
-
Even after watching to the end?
It's definitely got sad tones, but I found the ending beautiful and uplifting. I suppose you can interpret it multiple ways if you so desire, and I don't think it's meant to be literal, but I still feel it heavily purports that doing right will equal reward no matter the hardship. I think that's a beautiful statement.
EDIT - I wondered about the title thing too. He sort of briefly touched on it somewhere on the DVD interviews and such, but I can't recall what he said. Whatever it was, it was just in passing and didn't say much of substance. Something akin to "focus groups were too stupid to figure out the title" or something like that.
-
Yes, I saw the whole ending.
It's like Alice waking up after being through the looking glass, I thought. Except that Alice maybe had a dream, maybe had a wonderful adventure. In the movie, the down-to-Earth alternative is that the girl was murdered by her own fascist father (or was it stepfather?), and had something akin to a near-death experience that fits in with her fantasy world. Then she was dead. Isn't the whole point of the movie that there is no magic in this ugly world, that only children can escape it with their naive beliefs until they grow up into the calamity that surrounds them?
-
Well, that's one interpretation. It may even be the intended one. But personally, that isn't what I take from it. There are elements of that, yes, but to me fiction is a from of truth, a thing of creation that allows us to internalize our own feelings and make them manifest in a way that is understandable. I view the movie as a statement that work equals reward, that struggling through the difficult times in life under your own power will always bring you what you need to carry on and do better, that there are right moral choices to make and that making them is not only the best thing for yourself, but the best thing for other people and the world. That even if your only consolation in the end is telling yourself that you did the best you could and you acted well, that is reward enough. So I guess what I'm saying is that even if Guillermo del Toro doesn't believe that this is true, I believe that this is what the movie has helped me realize... that yes, that's reward enough.
