I'm suprised (http://pc.ign.com/articles/758/758364p1.html). It's not like Square has been a slouch in the graphics department, so I'm just going to assume this is just another piece of evidence that developement cost and time are as bad as people have been saying. Really though, they've already got their engine for FFXIII, why just dump it?
-
Interesting, I hope the engine is utilized well and not just used for over shiny graphics and detailed physics. The Unreal Engine has a lot to offer, but I can see it not being used well in the wrong hands. Won't be seeing any screenshots or videos of the next FF game using this engine for quite some time now, so only time will tell.

I have this deep sick feeling in my stomach that FFXIII will be transformed into an action/adventure game. Like they must redeem themselves for The Bouncer.
-
The Bouncer.
Never ever speak of that game again or the internet will implode.
-
I don't think this is portentous news of any grim degree. They know what they're doing and I highly doubt they would pay for the use of an engine if they didn't have plans for it. It's no reflection of where they may be taking the game, I think, merely a reflection of, as Sy said, the fact that development time/cost are getting out of hand for just about everyone. If they're going to be building on the concepts they set up with FFXII, I can't imagine XIII being lousy. A really good next-gen engine should give us some pretty amazing results in the end, I'd say!
-
That's definitely an interesting move by Square.
-
Wow....a Final Fantasy to utilize the Unreal Engine?
I never thought I'd see that day....
-
Pretty much everything I've seen is leaning towards this not being used for FFXIII since the White Engine is so far along in development.
Is there any actual confirmation either way out there?

FFXIII has been in development for awhile now(at least a year), it seems highly unlikely that this is for FFXIII but for future FF titles. FFXIII has a 2007 release date and it says that the engine won't be utilized in a game till 2008.
