Weird. Didn't know people still played this.
-
That's Id Software for you....
...Supporting their games, years after they've been released.
Sounds like something Blizzard would do....shit, just look at StarCraft.....
-
Speaking of which, I wonder how/if Starcraft/Diablo/Warcraft/etc run under Vista. You can be sure those will all be patched.

Yeah, it's very likely they'll be patched by Blizzard, I bet.

I think it's different. DOOM III isn't a big multiplayer game and as far as I know doesn't have much of a mod community to speak of. Therefore it's days as a hot or big game are pretty much done.
Starcraft on the other hand is still quite popular, especially considering its age.
-
Yeah, I think Doom 3 is just id and id supports all their stuff as much as possible. And Doom 3 isn't very old, even if its player base as an MP thing is next to nil. It's just not old enough for them to abandon yet, since I'm sure they're still selling copies of the game to more casual players who'll buy it because of the name.

I wouldn't be surprised if they hire out some company to make a Doom Wars game -- or some Doom MP-based game like Quake Wars, since Id's working on something new entirely...

That's not surprising.
Doom will sell, based on its name alone. Granted, Doom 3 was good, it just wasn't anything really spectacular. There were some spectacular moments, such as the levels of Hell :) , but there wasn't enough of those great moments, to suit me. :(

Its more like they still license the engine out and Vista support for the future is important. They are updating the engine anyway, so might as well release the patch.
Theres still a mod community behind the game, though its not nearly as popular as other games.
-
Isn't the engine kind of platform independent though? I mean I remember seeing a Linux version of Quake III and on the box it said all you have to do to run the game on Windows was to copy some file to some folder.

Totally awesome news. I love when id releases source code.
I wonder if The Dark Mod will go standalone. Would be pretty awesome.
-
So so awesome. I hope people are all over this.

I figured this would happen. (http://twitter.com/#!/ID_AA_Carmack/statuses/136614459887202305)
Lawyers are still skittish about the patent issue around "Carmack's reverse", so I am going to write some new code for the doom3 release.
If you're interested in some backstory, read this (http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1019517/creative-background-doom-iii-shadow-story). I basically feel like I need to take a shower after reading that slimy marketing bullshit. So anyway it appears Carmack is going to go fiddle with Doom 3s lighting code because hes afraid Creative is going to make a stink AGAIN if he releases the Doom 3 source containing it.
-
WTF?? :o
Not the "Carmack's reverse" bullshit again. Man, Creative should just let this shit GO and let Carmack have this one for Doom 3's Source Code Release. Seriously, Creative swindled support for their cards from Id, back in the day. It should end w/ this - shit was TOO long ago.
I guess the best we could get out of this is re-write, is somehow Carmack write shadows and lighting code that is tons different, but much better than what he had going on w/ Doom 3. How sweet would that be?
And while I'm at it - fuck Creative Labs!
-
I'm surprised Creative is still around. Do people still buy sound cards? I thought that Microsoft's driver model since Vista basically fucked Creative's whole EAX thing.
-
I think Creative's current business model has nothing to do with creating anything, and everything to do with patent trolling (IIRC).
-
So it looks like the source is out. From the readme I saw, there was this tidbit:
Back End Rendering of Stencil Shadows:
--------------------------------------
The Doom 3 GPL source code release does not include functionality enabling rendering
of stencil shadows via the “depth fail” method, a functionality commonly known as
"Carmack's Reverse".
No word on what its been replaced with, but from reading around it seems like Carmacks Reverse was used because it was a bit faster than other methods. Since PCs are faster now than they were in 2004 it probably doesn't matter and they just replaced the code.
Oooh, ioquake3 dudes are going to do iodoom3 (http://www.iodoom3.org/). Nothing fancy, but they clean up the codebase and make nice stable builds. Most standalone Q3 engine projects use ioquake3 as a base.
-
Thanks for bringing this awesome news to my attention, Idol! :)
Saw the link on Carmack's twitter (http://twitter.com/#!/ID_AA_Carmack/status/139106966357282817) for the Source Code.
Can't wait to see what modders will do w/ this.
