Title: Spartans, tonight we dine in Hell!
Post by: TheOtherBelmont on Thursday, March 01, 2007, 12:17:21 AM
So 300 is almost here, March 9th to be exact. (http://300themovie.warnerbros.com/)  I am planning on seeing this as soon as I can after that date, shooting for the 14th.  Who else is going to see this?  The style of the movie looks fucking awesome.  I love the graphic novel and the few people who have seen early screenings of it say that it doesn't stray too far from Miller's work at all.  I'm glad to see another one of Miller's comics faithfully adapted to the big screen(hopefully at least).

Also everyone should read the graphic novel if they can get a hold of it(it will probably be reprinted in masses like Sin City was after the movie), the art is very similar to Sin City but with more color and the writing is just as good.

I've missed a lot of movies in theaters recently, so I'm going to try catch this one.

I'm thinking I need to so to San Francisco openning night and see the thing on an IMAX screen. Hopefully Que will be my chaperone.

It looks awesome.  I really want to see it but Jennie is adverse, saying it looks like the whole movie is in slow-motion based on the trailer.

I'm so there.

And scott, the violence is definitely supposed to be stylized.  Just how so I don't really know.  But the dramatic stuff looks really good aside from all that which has to do with a great deal of my excitement.  The movie as a whole looks really interesting and well-acted.

I discovered that "The 300" is easily "available" right now.  I'll read what I "got" tonight sometime.

Edit:  I downloaded the HD trailers from Xbox Live a couple of nights ago.  That movie looks amazing.  I hope the whole thing lives up to the look.

I have yet to speak with a single female that doesn't have some kind of emotional aversion to the movie....

Anyway I'll be there opening night if possible.  I haven't been this excited about a movie in a long time.

I can't wait. It looks really good. I loved the graphic novel.

This spring looks like the ultimate in "guy" movies. We've got 300, Black Snake Moan, Zodiac, Hot Fuzz, Grindhouse, who knows what else is coming?

I know one....and suprisingly enough she's the last I'd think would be into it.

Anyways, I got the graphic novel a while ago - mainly due to my tendency to read a lot of fiction based in or on  classical Greece or Rome. Big fan, and it's cool seeing how a lot of the scenes in the trailer seem to be straight shots of some of the panels in the comic.  I probably won't see it opening weekend, but I'll see it none the less.....in Imax.

So I went back and read the comic again (and finished it, since I'd never had all of it at once before, just in pieces), and I'm really impressed with how much stuff from the trailers and still photos seems to match up with the comic.  I'm not sure if it's quite shot for shot, but it seems great from where I'm sitting.  I absolutely can't wait for the movie now.

I don't think Frank Miller would settle for anything less than a faithful adaption, and after Sin City I'm sure he got exactly what he wanted.

I was a little confused at seeing some "freaks" in the Persian army (not Ephialtes), like some dude with swords instead of arms, so I find myself wondering if he added those in himself just for the movie or if some guy just decided they needed more crazy shit in there.  I'd be a little worried about it if it weren't for the fact that so much of what I've seen was dead-on and that so many people who've already seen it said it was really faithful.

Greatest movie ever made. Period.

SPARTANS! WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSION?!?!

HU!!! HU!!! HU!!!

Fucking aye, that was so good. I couldn't go to sleep last night because I was so excited. I haven't felt like that after seeing a movie in a very long time.

The movie was good. But I was kind of let down. The battles were a little too anti-climatic. The voice over got in the way of some of the amped up battles and music, some of the actors were less than great. In fact, a lot of the dialog fell flat. There was too much ramping (slow down/speed up effect) that made some of the best action scenes seem like a bad music video. I kind of wish a better director could have been given the project. It just wasn't up to the quality of film making that was displayed in Sin City. I liked the movie, but it let me down in a lot of ways. I have to say it's nowhere near "the greatest movie ever made". Not even the best film of the past few years.

Overall I left (along with two of my friends, one male, one female) with the sense that yeah it was cool to look at ... but it was really detached feeling. In Sin City, and other countless great action films, I felt connected to the characters. The violence felt alive and real... here it just felt like a slow-mo video game cinematic.

Well I tried to convince Jennie last night to go see it with me and some friends.  The g/f's pretty much nixxed that idea.

Though I think it will be funny to tell Jennie what ender said, that the whole movie is slow-motion.  Because that's what she thought it was based on the trailer.

I'm somewhere in between on the issue.  I think it was one of the greatest action movies, but I did think the effects were overused.  Despite that, you could really tell that they had long stretches of action that weren't chopped up, which I remember hearing about in a few interviews.  The action stuff, even if over-effected, was still really impressive.  I wish they'd have messed with it a little less, but I was still smiling sadistically during half of it.

I'll agree that some of the acting was a bit less than I'd hoped, but that isn't to say I was entirely disappointed.  I thought the Queen did a great job, and Butler as Leonidas was *fucking perfect*.  They nailed that role dead on.  It was like he stepped straight out of the comic.  He was marvelous, I thought.

Overall I thought it was great, and my main issues were small ones.  Little niggles that bugged me a bit.  There was a gratuitous overuse of beheading that I thought was cheesy, and I hated the whole scene where the
(click to show/hide)
Some of the sexy stuff I thought was a little bit too thick, although I did think they handled the King/Queen relationship nicely.  You really got a sense of deep emotional attachment and love from them, and the sex scene was pretty tasteful.  It was just long enough that it felt like it was trying too hard.  Same with the Ephors.  They were just... a bit much.  The whole licking the Oracle thing and all that.  It was just trying too hard.

So yeah, overall I was impressed and I thought the movie was cool, and it was fucking *amazing* to watch on the IMAX screen.  It was practically built for it.  But I still much prefer the comic to the movie for the love of the comic's simplicity.  The movie, while faithfully capturing a lot of it, just had too much in it.  The story is so simple and the movie just felt like it was too rich for it's own good.  A lot of the beauty and drama of the story was crushed under the weight of the content, because the comic, while epic and heavy in a lot of regards, is very light overall.  It flows differently, moves with more grace, and the way it's painted changes the way its read.  Admittedly, a lot of that would be harder to capture in a movie than something like, say, Sin City, so this turned out probably about like I expected with a couple exceptions.  I'll agree with Ender that a better director would have been able to circumvent more of the problems, though.

Still, it was worth the money.  I had a good time.  Even some of the additions to the story weren't bad.  The Queen stuff was pretty good for the most part, and I didn't even mind the way they made the Persians a bit more monstrous.  It was a good movie... just not perfect.  Still one of the better action movies I've seen in a long time, and like I said, I think a lot of that counts for just how well the action was done.  Yes, there was too much ramping and some of the effects were overkill in general, but despite all that you could clearly see down to the bottom... you could look past it and get a good, clear look at how well done the foundation for all the action was.  On that level, I'm *still* really impressed.

I think my main problem was the actress that played the queen, and the guy who played Theron. They just had little to no hold on the characters... it was kind of like bad soap opera acting. Also, the vocal modulation used on Xerxes was laughable, even though I thought they did a tremendous job on him visually. I dunno, it just felt really detached and lifeless to me in everything except some of the battles. I hate to say that, because I liked the visuals a lot... just somehow it didn't seem full of life to me. Its kind of how I felt about The Science of Sleep last year... great visuals, nothing to hold on to.
Title: Re: Spartans, tonight we dine in Hell!
Post by: Quemaqua on Saturday, March 10, 2007, 01:59:19 PM
Theron didn't do anything for me, but I thought the Queen was good.  Was hard to get a feel for her either way given that her character was all but nonexistent in the comic.  Same with Theron.  I don't know if the other guys did better because they got to look at the comic and see the characters or not, because I don't know whether or not they even read it (I would assume so given how short it is... no excuse not to).  I think the main problem was the stuff they added with those characters just wasn't that strong.  It wasn't terrible, but I feel like it didn't give them a lot to work with.  Right after the movie I had a more positive view of it, but the more I think on it, the more that tacked on stuff feels tacked on.  I think it was a less a problem with the actors and more a problem with the material (and the script/dialogue... I swear, nearly all the movies I've watched recently and not liked that much were almost all victims of lousy scripts).

Julia didn't like Delios much, but I thought he was fine.  She found the narration a little off.  Didn't strike me as much of an issue, though.  I think it was more than she liked him better as Faramir in LotR.

Funny story... well, sort of.  Julia was feeling really sick at the theater because she's on some new meds that we think aren't agreeing with her.  Once she sat down, though, she started to feel a bit better.  Then when the movie started and the  battles got going... man.  There were a few times when she shoved her face into my chest and closed her eyes, and I think everyone around us thought that it was because she couldn't watch the violence.  But it was because she the huge IMAX screen was making her unsettled stomach feel a bit *more* unsettled... motion sickness.  It was pretty funny, because Julia's seen and read stuff equally if not more violent than this movie.  Hell, she went through the entire Berserk anime *and* manga.

I probably will, whenever Alamo updates their website for the actual date (it may or may not be on Apr 16th) I'll request that day off.  He just did another movie presentation (Torso and Zombie) at the same theater a couple of days ago but tickets sold out super fast because of SXSW starting on the 9th.

The oracle thing was okay.  It was really just a different interpretation of what's in the comic.  I thought it was a bit overkill, but I couldn't really fault it.  Had I done it, it would have been a bit... less.  But if I made the movie, much of it would have been less indulgent on the whole.

Still, I want to watch it again.  Looking forward to getting it on DVD as I'm sure it'll have some cool extras, and I'll be able to focus on the details a bit more since I was a little distracted that night because Julia was feeling so lousy.

I saw it today at an IMAX theater and came away really satisfied. I just loved the visuals and style of it, and the choreography was just so brilliantly well done. The gloriousness of the battle scenes just pretty much overwhelmed any bad spots the movie had. I didn't like the political drama there was with Queen and the so called traitor. I just felt it didnt do much and by the time it introduced itself, it just kind of resolved itself in a anti-climatic way. Then there was the deformed spartan which really didnt make much sense to me all together, I thought it was going to go somewhere but it didn't. But like I said, everything else was just so marvelous which made it a very worthy action movie.

Ignore the bad press Cobra, the movie is definitely worth seeing in theaters, some of the critics make valid criticisms but for the most part I think it was just too brutal and stylized for some people's likings, I remember Sin City getting somewhat similar reviews and criticisms based on the style and violence(and not having much substance) and that movie was great.

The problem is that Sin City has much more depth, story and excitement than 300... not to mention lots of great performances. 300 has.... Gerard Butler, who is merely good.

Its a comic book on the big screen. Comic books are mainly style over substance.

This is also a different kind of "style over substance". Its hard to point at how or why that is...it just is. Its the "good" kind. A movie like "Ultraviolet" was the bad kind. Just a mishmash of outlandish action and explosives and nothing ever made sense. 300 went along and told its story and every single shot is suitable for framing. I think thats where people are confused by it. How many other films can you take an arbitrary freeze frame of and have it look so amazing?

May have been true in the past, but I have found modern day comic books to have a lot more substance than most movies of the past two years. It has a lot to do with the fact that movies have sucked recently I think.

I don't disagree that movies have pretty much sucked lately, with a few gems here and there.  But the medium is totally different.  Comic books have entire runs to further a story allowing for lots of leeway, but a movie has to wrap up the story or at least have some kind of resolution in two hours.  So, it's kinda hard to make the comparisons between comics and movies, apart from the styles onscreen.

I don't think I know what I'm saying.

I think good points have been made.  I agree that comics these days have quite a lot of substance if you're looking in the right places.  Again, if you compare the 300 comic to the 300 movie, you'll find that while the movie attempts to have more going on, there's a lot more substance in the comic.  I think it was just a little bit of the director trying to go too much into a Sin City route than the comic truly called for.  It doesn't feel like Sin City, but it feels like it's trying to go more over the top than the comic would warrant in some cases.  That doesn't mean I didn't like it, because I did (and if you're going to see a crazy special effects movie in a theater, this is the one), I just wouldn't have done it the same way had I been making it.  It goes right back to my liking of The Illusionist more than The Prestige that we talked about in the associated threads.  This 300 was Prestige.  Mine would have been Illusionist.  I'd prefer a little more simplicity, a little less flash and a little more of a painterly quality.  This director was trying to make a huge movie, and one to match Sin City, which was incredibly huge in its own way.  That was a lot to live up to, and I think that's what knocked it down from what it could have been.

But again, it was worth seeing.  It wasn't high art, but it was damn good fun.

And I disagree entirely about Butler, ender.  He was fucking perfect in that movie.  And actually, I guess I don't just mean in the movie, I mean in the role.  He was Leonidas, or at least about as close as you could hope for.  I thought he did an amazing job on all fronts.

EDIT - Added a little bit to my explanations.

I agree Hoob they are different mediums entirely. I was just defending comic books I guess. :P You are right it is an unfair comparison, they are totally different mediums. I guess I just wanted to vent a little about the fact that the movie industry has been really going downhill for me.

That is the weirdest thing I have seen on the internet since yesterday.  But seriously, what the fuck?  It's awesome in its pointlessness.  Kudos to your friend!

After nearly a year of anticipating this movie, I finally got to see it last night.

I went back tonight.  I've never seen a movie more than once in the theater.  If you take it for what it is, a 2 hour ballet of bloodletting and testosterone, then you'll be pleased.  I didn't expect a fleshed out plot or character development, I expected 2 hours of straight up asskicking.  And that's exactly what I got.

If the military were to set up recruitment stations outside of the screening area they'd have met their quota for the year in a week's time.  As I left the only thing I wanted to do is kick the shit out of something.
