Title: Echoes - Awesome Asteroids meets Geometry Wars game
Post by: idolminds on Monday, March 12, 2007, 07:34:34 PM
Echoes (http://www.binaryzoo.com/games/echoes/index.htm)

I've been trying all sorts of GeoWars clones and any game that can use my controller. So I found this. Its friggin' awesome. Good sound, nice music, challenging. It ramps up pretty quickly. This isnt one hit to your ship and you die, your ship has health. Theres a little hud for it...and you'll never be able to take your eyes of the screen to see it. Luckily they also included a ring around your ship. When its large and green, you're good. When its small and red, you're almost dead. You only get one life from what I can tell. Dont worry, there are health pickups that drop.

Its pretty "pure" from a gameplay perspective. Fly around, shoot everything, get the high score. The sounds add so much...its like fireworks going off. Definitely try it out if you even kinda like GeoWars.

In somewhat related news, 1.4 million high score in Geometry Wars.  Woot.

Anyway, this looks pretty cool.

It seems to be a piece of shit, technically.  I couldn't get the game to start.  I mean, it starts, and I can move all over the place, but nothing else happens.  Nothing attacks me, and I can't shoot with anything I could think of pressing.  (Should be the mouse, but I tried lots of keys too.  I alt-tabbed out to read some more about it, but it would not let me move the mouse cursor out of the top-left corner on the desktop.  So I alt-tabbed back in, and it crashed out with an error.

Edit:  Tried it on the other PC.  Same behavior.  My guess is that the mouse/KB control is broken, maybe because it can't find a joypad.  It complains about no recognized joypad in red text.  It's also not aspect-ratio aware, so it's squashed-looking too.  I think I'll pass until next revision.
