Title: The DVD/HD-DVD Combo Discs -- Some Questions To Fire Off
Post by: MysterD on Tuesday, March 27, 2007, 03:14:30 PM
So, I rented and just inserted the disc for Children of Men into my DVD drive here.

I just watched an ad/trailer for what looks like they are planning to sell some movies as DVD/HD-DVD Combo discs -- where one side of the disc is the regular DVD format, yet the other side of the disc is HD-DVD format. That sounds pretty cool to me.

(This reminds me of how some music albums are CD/DVD Combo discs; where one side audio CD, other side is DVD -- which is pretty cool to me!!!)

So, any idea of much more expensive these discs are, when compared to regular DVD discs and regular HD-DVD discs??? They must be going for a chunk more, I'd guess..... Anything else worth noting about these???

I wonder, has Blu-Ray came up w/ a "combo disc" response yet? Probably where one side is Blu-Ray disc format, while the other side is regular DVD format???

Given the format war w/ M$ and Sony here, I wonder if we'll ever see the day where there is disc where one side is Blu-Ray format, other side is HD-DVD. Heh, now that would be interesting....

I think they are about $5 more on Amazon than their regular counterparts.

Also last I checked there were no Blu-Ray combo discs. I wonder if that is even possible?

If there ain't, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony announces one, suddenly....hehe.

Hmmm....I dunno if it's possible, either......

I'd imagine it'd be harder to do with blu-ray, but I have no idea why.  The different spectrum of the laser or maybe they use a different material (which could be why they can't refit old DVD production machines for BR, just HDDVD) for the disk.

Either way, the format war isn't really Sony/Microsoft, I think it's Sony/Toshiba.  I'm pretty sure MS signed on with the Blu-Ray Group as well as the HDDVD one, they just use HDDVD as an add on player for the 360 because using a blu-ray one would be retarded.

Yeah, I heard they were going to do this.  Kind of reminds me of SACD, where there is a regular CD layer as well as the SACD layer.

Oh man I don't know why but I find it really irritating that people think its Sony vs MS in the format war when it's not, HD-DVD isn't MS' format like B-Ray is Sony's. The format war isn't just being fought through the consoles. I don't now about MS signing on with both sides but at the end of the day that's all they'd do is sign on.

Well MS has repeatedly said that if Blu Ray wins the war that they will have a Blu Ray peripheral for the 360.  But right, it's not MS vs Sony on this.  I think that's just the perception since the 360 has the HD-DVD drive and the PS3 has the Blu Ray drive.

Exactly! Interesting too because while I never read or heard MS saying that they would bring out a Blue Ray add on I always figured they would if HD failed. To me MS has been just that little bit smarter here - they have bolted on a piece of hardware to their console that could become obsolete.

So what you're saying is its MS vs Sony.

That's pretty much what I was trying to say, except I didn't know why.

Well couldn't MS just release a Blu-Ray drive now? That would make for one less reason to get a PS3.

True, but at the same time it feeds Sony money because that would really help Blu-Ray in the format war.  Basically there would be more Blu-Ray disc sales funneling money into Sony's war chest.

Right.  I don't prefer one technology over another.  I just hate Sony more than the other guys.  Less repressive, though still repressive, is better.

BDROM and HDDVD use the same spectrum laser - 405 nanometers. And I think you're talking about is the hardcoating used on Blu-Ray.

At least 90% of the time, all I'm doing is referencing Wikipedia.

And 10% of the time, all I'm doing is referencing my ass.

Man, I just made a dig at the only guy here with as much potential for verbal abuse as myself.  I hope I didn't start something.

The other 10% of the time, I don't usually bother with citations.

Unfortunately, the technical term for that is "referencing out of his ass."
