Title: Little Winamp help, anyone?
Post by: NatchDan on Wednesday, March 28, 2007, 10:33:23 AM
First off, hi again. I finally have the internet back! I'm back in England again now.

Secondly, since my return, Winamp crashes every single time I try to play anything. Any ideas what the hell's wrong?

Welcome back! Glad you got there safe. Do you have any plugins that are causing the problem? I had a few that were giving me trouble awhile back.

Nope, I made sure I had none. I even uninstalled the bundled MusicMagic one.

Have you tried reinstalling?  Are there any errors or anything like that?

I've reinstalled, I've updated to the new beta, nothin'. The only error is in the beta, telling me that the error reporter is broken too.

What sort of music or video files are you trying to play?

Hmmm... try the in_mpg123 Winamp plugin.  It's a MP3 plugin that supports replay-gain and gapless decoding.

in_mpg123 for Winamp ≥ v5.3 (http://otachan.com/in_!mpg123_118ot112.1.7z)

in_mpg123 for Winamp < v5.3 (http://otachan.com/in_!mpg123_118ot109.2.7z)

It looks like Shibatch started using 7-Zip compression, so you'll either need 7-Zip or WinRAR.  To install it, just open the compressed file and navigate to the bin directory.  Next, you'll have the options of normal or SSE2.  Use normal if you have an AMD processor pre-Opteron or a Intel processor pre-Pentium 4.  If you have a Pentium 4, Pentium M, Celeron, Celeron M, Core, Opteron, Sempron, Turion 64, or Athlon64, then you can (and should) use the SSE2 version.  Just drop the in_!mpg123.dll file in your Winamp plugin directory.  You'll also want to delete (or rename or archive) in_mp3.dll.

Unfortunately you'll loose the ID3 tag editing interface used by in_mp3.  But you can supplant it by using foobar2000 to edit tags, or by installing install mp3infp.

You can read more about it here (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=18530).

I have zero suggestions.  But glad you made it back to England safe and sound!

The best I can say is that scott knows his shit.  If he says something, try it.

Thanks for the help and the welcomes. I managed to fix it myself last night by dicking around with the registry, but thanks anyway!

I did just realise, though, that I accidentally chose not to install enqueuing. Reinstall time!

Congrats.  You might consider checking out the plug-in I mentioned.  It adds replaygain and gapless playback support to MP3s.  Even if you don't use those, all you really lose is the tag editor.

That I don't know.  I hate autorun anyway, and always turn it off.
