SO IT TURNS OUT that STALKER isn't actually nicking lots of other people's artwork. Big surprise?
The internet was a-storm over the weekend with rumours that textures had been found in STALKER's game engine that looked similar to textures found in Half-Life 2 and Doom 3. We previously reported the rumours.
Thanks to reader Rob S. for pointing out that the water textures used by both Valve and GSC GameWorld, the makers of STALKER, come from a texture pack sold by Marlin Studios. The chaps at Marlin make all kinds of exciting textures, including 'Home & Office Furniture - High Detail, Low Price!' and 'Traffic - Low Poly Pretextured Vehicles, SUVs and trucks you can even animate!'
Stunning stuff.
Valve has confirmed that it picked up some textures from Marlin for HL2, and separate sources have discovered that the IMP_Light texture that it was thought could have been pilfered from Doom 3 was, in fact, just a standard Impact Light texture, rather than referring to the Doom 3 monster.
We can integrate this into the bigger STALKER thread in a few days, so that this item doesn't get lost. So I guess they weren't thieving.
Shame on MysterD for spreading rumors at every forum on the net.
j/k. :P

This is great news.
Psssssssssssssshew! :)

I just link up and quote the news I see. ;)
This could've really been a disaster for the company, if the rumor was true.
Well, since that Crysis -- I mean crisis -- is averted, let's all cheer!!!
Oh, Pug -- where'd you find the news???
You left the linky out

That *is* great news. Way to go, internet, for blowing everything out of proportion. Now hopefully we can continue to enjoy support for the game.

At least it won't be pulled off the shelves, a big lawsuit won't be flying GSC's way, and a damaged reputation won't be headed GSC's way.
And yeah -- it'll be good for the game to get more support, from gamers (with sales) and dev's (with patches). I do need to get this one, eventually.
Though, Shivering Isles has taken a hold of me....big time.

It was on the INQ.
I just link up and quote the news I see. Wink
I know... I was just kidding. :)
The news makes sense because there was no word on a lawsuit yet.

Wow good news. I guess I thought that since they were a Russian company, they wouldn't be above such a practice. Nice to see I was proven wrong.

Yea I have to admit, I thought along those lines. Shame on me.
I am also sure they would have plead their innocence a while back had they known what was going on. I get the impression that they aren't PR savvy.

You know, PR was never really too great from companies overseas, especially Indies -- probably b/c of the language barriers and all of that stuff that can get in the way.
Just look at Pirahna Bytes...
Here's the article Pug didn't like us to, BTW:
