With the lot of you posting about serious personal issues like being stuck in a serious situation at home, or being detached from life because of drugs, or enjoying the wrong kind of facials, I feel a bit silly posting something so trivial by comparison.
This has been bothering me for a while now, but I have a real issue with starting a PC game and it seemed to have started four years ago and it only grows worse. Once I start it, I am fine and keep coming back to it like I do with Oblivion. I have a 8800GTX with a really powerful processor and a 22'' monitor. I can't even begin to describe how gorgeous games look on my screen, yet I just keep putting off starting any game that involves some effort on my part in terms of getting into.
Normally I keep looking for the perfect moment, where I have more than a few hours to play. And when I do, I start making excuses like having to check up on my work, or wait till after a meal or just about anything at all. An example is that I wanted to start Company of Heroes on a day off today, and spent the past nine hours just putting it off, and now it is near midnight here.
This doesn't seem to be happening with the PSP. I look for every excuse to turn on Lumines, Loco Roco, Mercury Rising, Virtua Tennis etc. Yet even games on the PSP I've purchased that require some effort on my part, I keep putting off to find the perfect moment. These are games like Jax, Metal Gear and a few others.
To give you an extent of my problem, here are some of the PC games that are still shrink wrapped:
1. Gothic 3.
2. Company of Heroes.
3. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent
4. Titan Quest expansion
5. Jade Empire (shit...I keep seeing more on the shelf)
6. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (I returned it, but *forgot* to uninstall)
7. Test Drive Unlimited.
8. Supreme Commander (Oh man...)
I am also contemplating purchasing the new ATi video card even though mine is alright, while I stop myself from getting a quadcore processor everytime I hit the hardware store. I even built my sister a E6400 system with a 8600GTS, and spent time tweaking, overclocking and benchmarking the hell out of it. I enjoyed that so much, and am going to build my bro. a system soon.
So really I need help.
I remember when I had deadlines to meet at AOG. I'd be finishing three games a week, playing like a freak while juggling clubbing and studying.
Ugh...
-
I get like that sometimes. My problem is if I see a game that cheap, I just get it. Doesn't mean I want to play it...I just want it anyway.
Though part of my problem is my system has aged and newer games don't run very well, so its kind of annoying to play games like that. I'd probably play more once I upgrade.
-
Yea I understand how you feel. That's why I don't buy games very often unless I'm sure I want to own it. Half the time, I install it and play it for 5 minutes and never play it again.
-
Half the time, I install it and play it for 5 minutes and never play it again.
The thing is that once I start and get past fifteen minutes, then I am hooked. I even have no trouble returning to it, even if means 30 minutes of gaming at a time. The trouble seems to be starting it. Maybe I need deadlines again.
I am starting to feel like I enjoy collecting games far too much.
Also what system do you have idol?
-
I have a problem like that too. My problem is worse though. If I stop playing a game for more than like two days, there is a very good chance I'll never play it again.
-
1ghz Athlon (though its like 2100+ or whatever they named it), 512MB RAM, 9700 Pro. I really need to upgrade.
-
Yeah that's pretty long-in-the-tooth. I upgraded from an Athlon XP 2400+ (2.0 Ghz), 768 MB RAM, and a 9800XT. And I felt like that thing was ancient.
-
There are alot of things wrong with you, Pug. Your life isn't worth living. I suggest suicide.
-
I have pretty much every problem mentioned, just not quite as severe as you all seem to have it. I do my best to deal with it. I love games and I love to see new things, but I love it to a fault, and sometimes I have so much on my plate there are things I just don't get to. Plus I have tons of creative hobbies that take a lot of gaming time away, so... it gets really difficult.
-

Ooh, a pretty archaic system. I got one just like it sitting beside my main system. It doesn't do much now except for downloading stuff.

You should totally turn it into a file server or play around with VMWare Sever.

Funny, thats pretty much all I do with this one. :P
It plays Diablo well enough, and I have a backlog of older games I'm playing. I would have upgraded already but then we hit the dual cores, now DX10 and Vista...it made sense to wait. Plus it was either go to Cali or upgrade this spring, and I wanted to go to Cali. Hopefully I can save up the money to do it this summer/fall.

God your pathetic. Why dont you just drop off the face of the FUCKING PLANET YOU WORTHLESS PIECE OF GARBAGE.
Can't finish a game? Well go cry me a river. You should be so lucky to the system you got let alone games to play. You don't deserve to have a life. I'm just so SICK OF ALL YOUR BULLSHIT.
-
Oh shit, I think keebs learned pyros password at the meet.
-
hahaha
-
Maybe my problem is that I have too many games on my plate. It is a little intimidating to decide what to play next, just from that list I posted above. Meanwhile my sister has finished Company of Heroes.

Yea you can't even upgrade, cause you are probably on AGP. AMD has dropped prices dramatically recently though. ATi is set to release kick ass cheap DX10 cards on Mat 14th. Furthermore AMD is releasing its Barcelona chip a few months after, that seems to be its redemption and apparently much faster than Core Duo 2.
You know I have my brother's 2500+ processor lying around somewhere. I can't seem to sell it, so if you want it, I'll mail it to ya. That reminds me, I have to hunt for Undying. :)

No one gets angry like I do. What a poser!
-
Yeah, that was the other thing. Soon after I built this rig everyone started switching to PCI-E, so I was kinda boned in the upgradability department.
-
haha
you said boned
-
Well the highest processor you can hit is the 3000 and the vid card would be something like the X1950 AGP, but AGP cards cost $50-$100 more than their PCIe counterparts so it doesn't make sense. Plus you'll have to go DDR2 as well. Yea you can't really save anything unfortunately.

1. Gothic 3.
I'd wait until that upcoming 1 GB patch is released.
It's said that right now, this game is a buggy mess of a game -- MAJORLY. As in one of the buggiest games ever made.
5. Jade Empire (shit...I keep seeing more on the shelf)
Jade's great.
6. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (I returned it, but *forgot* to uninstall)

-
haha that must be one BIG harddrive D!
-
Scratch contract jack off your list. You dont even have to play that one.
-
Why the heck did you buy "Bet on Soldier"?
-
Half the time, I install it and play it for 5 minutes and never play it again.
I've done this with around 20 or so games in the past few years. It's a bad habit.
Also, pyro wins with his comment. Pure gold.
-
Why the heck did you buy "Bet on Soldier"?
Saw it for $5 and said, "Why not?"
haha that must be one BIG harddrive D!
I have TWO Seagate 160 GB SATA hard drives installed.
(That totals in at 320 GB)

:( NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Because it's a waste of $5? Maybe? (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/betonsoldier/review.html)

Thats a very long list of games D... wow. :-\

Yeah, it sure is.
But, I'm glad I have each and every one of those.
I love gaming.
-

That you've barely/never played? What the hell is wrong with you? It sits there collecting dust doing nothing. It was a waste of money.

Thanks. I was having trouble with that.

I do like to collect these things.

Lots of anger towards MyD in this thread. I like it, it's fun.
I went through a similar thing and ended up just not playing games anymore. I couldn't justify the cost considering I could never work up the motivation to play them. I do like to brush off old classics every now and then and I can get lost in them for hours, but that's such a rare occasion.

It's nothing really too new. :P

It's not that we hate him, he has his ways and some of them are.. well peculiar ;D

Not many hate me, really....

I seem to get that a lot....

Are you really the one to make that judgment? :-[

Of course I am.
-
When you say "of course", it's with such gravity. Almost as much as if it were preceded by "a horse is a horse" and odd theme music.

You squeezed all that in?
-
Holy crap I'm the complete opposite of a lot of people on this topic. When I buy/rent a game I play it straight through until I finish it. Even if I have acquired two games at the same time, I'll still finish one before I start the other. All the games I own I have beaten, most several times. I wish I had that kind of money to blow on that many games.
-
Help me Belmont! How do you do it?
-
Help me Belmont! How do you do it?
I don't know, I guess it's just part of my personality. I finish what I start. I can't figure out how people can get far into a great game and not finish it*cough*Que and FFXII*cough*, when it's not a shitty game or personal life stuff getting in the way. Hell, when I used to live with W7RE I think I beat more of his console games than he did, even though I had less time to play them than he did.
-
Yeah, well, for me my entire life is shitty personal stuff that gets in the way, so...
-
haha..
I actually have a 320 GBs with a 200GB but have maybe half the games installed.
You squeezed all that in?
I do.
And then some.
There's some I didn't even list that are installed, such as....
--Disciples 2: Rise of the Elves
--Freedom Fighters
--Painkiller: Black

Usually what happens is when I buy a game, I install it and test it. Make sure it runs and all -- so I don't have to return the game for being defective and junk. Then, once I begin, I do try to quit the game, but what does happen is if I do get into it and like it off the bat...
...What happens is once I begin a game and tests that it runs, that becomes the new game I'm playing. And then, I buy another game, I test that, that becomes the new game I'm playing -- just repeat the cycle over and over, and you can see why I've got so many games I ain't finished!
Though, every now and then, I buy a game, stick w/ it, and finish it to the end. Like I did w/ Jade Empire PC and STALKER.
