Ok, I have been infected with the truly annoying Virtumonde bug.. It basically randomly pops up adds for some bogus software etc. And it is extremely agitating. No matter how many times I remove the bogus .dll's it generates, new ones crop up.
Apparently AVG didn't start detecting it until recently, I removed it and switched to Avira AntiVirŪ PersonalEdition Classic. Which is detecting them as well, but it only removes the bogus dll's, without actually resolving the root of the problem.
Does anyone know how to get rid of it?
I'm liking Antivir so far, it has a clean interface and is farily light on the system. What do you all recommend for a reliable (and free) antivirus?

After a quick google investigation I came across this program. (http://www.atribune.org/content/view/24/2/) Hopefully that helps.

Thanks Ghandi, I hope it works.

Does Windows Defender help in this case?

Failing that, try Vundo Fix, but only if you believe what Wikipedia has to say on the subject (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VirtuMonde).

VundoFix seems to have resolved the problem. I have yet to experience any annoying pop-ups since I used it.
Windows Defender didn't really do much. It detected some of the bogus dll's, then it took me to the Microsoft site with some antivirus software recommendations.
I also ran the Windows OneCare online scanner, and it pretty much did the same thing (and it cleaned up some temp files).

Glad to hear it worked. Kudos to google search. :)

I just realized why my Google searches weren't yielding good results! I've been searching "Virtumod"!! My bad!
Thanks again Ghandi.
By teh way, how effective is Windows Defender anyway?

I'm not sure, but it gets pretty good marks.
