AMD's always trying to jump -- somehow -- ahead of Intel.
AMD tried to jump ahead w/ their 64-bit processor...Intel put out a double-core processor.
Here's AMD's answer to that one.
Uh-huh, AMD is preparing a triple-core processor now. (http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/16/is-amd-readying-three-core-processors/)

Didn't intel (and AMD with the new opterons) already release quad cores?
EDIT: I guess I should have read the article. Makes sense now.

Interesting. People smarter than me should add their thoughts to this thread so I can steal them and sound smart later.

pfft why would I want 3 cores when I could get 4 (good idea though re-using bad 4 core chips)? I guess we'll have to wait and see what the benchmarks have to say.

I read about this a few days ago, and like Jedi said, what about quad cores. There is already a mainstream intel quadcore available, and something super fast will be quite affordable in a few months, so whatever.
