GFW magazine will have the scoop (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/49002).
So..Dark Eldar I guess. No other details, but I'll post them when I get the next issue in the mail.
-
Hell yea. Dark Eldar and hopefully Tyranids. I think that will really encompass the rest of the universe pretty well and Sy will be able to die a happy man.
-
Awesome. I toyed with the idea of trying to get a Dark Eldar army together for quite some time and ended up deciding I have enough on my plate right now. That's cool news for me.
From where I sit, there will be two challenges in getting them into DoW. The first is they're extremely fast and extremely fragile. Like, they can move across the board in a turn, but if they hit a pothole on the way they'll all die. That's harder too pull off in real time because you can't have things move too fast or die too quickly because it just never works. They don't really build up like a traditional army since they're primarily raiders, so they tend to hit hard then run off before anyone really has a chance to fire back. Relic will have to take some liberties, but it's not like this is new stuff to them and they've done well so far so that'll probably be fine.
The real problem will be just the look of the Dark Eldar. The line of models is probably the oldest in collection and a lot of them are in complete need of an update to look on par with the other races. They have a few cool looking guys (the standard Warrior is pretty sweet), but Relic needs to put their stamp on a few of them to bring them up to date. That could also be the start of something else for Warhammer in general as well. Since the Dark Eldar line are one of the oldest in circulation and usually one of the first cited as needing an update, this could be the hint that'll happen within the next year or so. The last expansion lined up with the update to the normal Eldar and sorta helped confirm that the Harlequins were getting an update, so maybe this is something similar.

Totally awesome. This is one game that could get updates for the next hundred years and I don't think I'd ever complain.

Press release:
THQ Inc. today announced Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm, the next standalone chapter in internal studio Relic Entertainment's award-winning Real-Time Strategy (RTS) franchise, is scheduled for release on Windows PC in spring 2008. Featuring an extensive interplanetary campaign spanning an entire star system in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm introduces two all-new factions for an unprecedented total of nine playable races. "Relic Entertainment has set the standard for technical excellence and innovation in the RTS genre," said Bob Aniello, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, THQ. "Dawn of War - Soulstorm continues that tradition as a standalone title featuring all-new, brutally addictive single and multiplayer game-play that will hook newcomers and skilled Dawn of War veterans alike."
"In Dawn of War - Soulstorm, we've taken Games Workshop's epic war from one planet to an entire star system," said Tarrnie Williams, general manager, Relic Entertainment. "Allowing gamers to play nine unique races, introducing air units and providing multiplayer achievements for the first time creates a tremendous amount of new and challenging strategic gameplay for all players."
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm is set in Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 universe - a dark, futuristic, fantasy setting where armies of technologically advanced warriors, fighting machines and hordes of implacable aliens wage constant war - and is played by millions worldwide. Executive produced and co-developed by Relic Entertainment in association with Iron Lore Entertainment, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm is a complete standalone title and will feature two all-new armies, including the malicious Dark Eldar, for an unprecedented total of nine playable races. In addition to new units across each of the seven existing races, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm will incorporate air units for the first time and introduce multiplayer medals, adding a whole new level of depth to online battles. The revolutionary meta-game introduced in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade is further expanded to an interplanetary scale in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm, allowing players to battle across an entire star system.
So guesses on the 2nd new army?

Man I'm gonna reinstall DoW. I frickin' love this game!
It's gotta be Tyranids! What other option is there? I mean they wouldn't put the Sisters of Battle would they?
-
Honestly, I wouldn't mind an Inquisition /Sisters of Battle Army, even at the expense of Nids. That'd be freaking awesome.
Tyranids is probably the safest guess, but if it's not then they'll be delving into obscure territory. That could be really fun, especially if they do some non-Marine Chaos army or something (think Renegade Imperial Guard or Cult armies).
-
Yeah, they have a lot of options. Of course I'm praying for my Sisters, but that doesn't seem too likely... unless maybe that mod team that was working on the Sisters army turns out something cool. Maybe they could use their work and put them in officially! Or I can dream it, anyway. But yeah, 'Nids is my guess.

According to Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6179875.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=newstop&tag=newstop;title;4), this expansion is being co-developed by Iron Lore. The Titan Quest guys. How...interesting.
-
Co-developed? I'm not sure I like the sound of that. It makes it sound like Relic is busy with new projects and is going to outsource a lot of the work. And that would kind of suck. Though there's no proof of that, and Titan Quest seemed pretty competent... there's no reason to necessarily think that Iron Lore would fuck anything up. They've got Relic to give guidance and stuff regardless of how much involvement they have, so... eh. I'll just cross my fingers and be done with it.
-
Yeah, I heard that at some Warhammer board as well.
At this point, there's so much core game that's already built I imagine it's more or less a matter of simply building the models and inputing the data. They'd be doing mostly grunt work... like building a Sims Expansion. You know? They already have models and rules to work off of, so it's not like they're entirely left to their own devices. I'll be crossing my fingers as well, but I'd say there isn't too much to screw up at this point.
-
i feel like playing Warhammer with you guys again.. anyone down?
-
Those were good times. I could be down. I really need to uninstall BioShock if I'm ever going to get any space on this machine again...
-
I'll play anything with you guys again. I was actually going to make a thread...Quake 3, OpenArena, Doom 2, DoW, Diablo 2, UT2k4....whatever.
-
Does Quake 2 have any good sourceports? I think I've asked this before and stuff, but seriously... Quake 2 DM or CTF or... anything. I needs it.
-
Id be down for some DoW, or perhaps Quake 2, I think the copy of Quake 4 I bought came with it.
-
Quake2maX (http://quake2max.planetquake.gamespy.com/), EGL (http://egl.quakedev.com/), Quake 2 Evolved (http://www.quake2evolved.com/news.htm)...yeah, theres a few source ports. I'd be really tempted to use R1Q2 (http://www.r1ch.net/stuff/r1q2/), because according to wikipedia its been the official Q2 client/server for Quakecon tournaments.
*EDIT*
Looks like EGL supports the R1Q2 protocol as well. And reading the R1Q2 page, you can still connect to regular servers with it but on R1Q2 servers they use better netcode. Sweet.
*EDIT2*
One of these day we have to play The Ship, Que. Now that Steam has finished its hissy fit update.
-
Uh...bump: Its Sisters of Battle (http://au.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/warhammer40000dawnofwarsoulstorm/news.html?sid=6181715&tag=topslot;title;1) for the 2nd race.
-
HELL YES BITCHES!
EDIT - Also, the rest of it sounds awesome. I was sold before, but I'm totally even more sold now.
-
I'm going to give a little hell yeah too. I love my Nids, but having the Sisters is something that really no other RTS out there has an equivalent too, at least on a purely visual level. When it comes down too it, they're not all that dissimilar to Space Marines.
I can't wait to hear how they voice them.
Edit: The Penitent Engine's (http://us.games-workshop.com/games/40k/witchhunters/catalog/pengine.htm) in the game. Sweet. And they're acting working faith into how the Sisters fight, I wasn't actually expecting that.

Relic explains why the newest Soulstorm patch hasn't been released yet.
It's b/c they are having a tough time patching the game so the game works for ALL users since the DRM security measures used with namely their digital distribution partners are causing them some troubles and issues. (http://www.relic.com/news/Update-Soulstorm-Patch/)

Update: Soulstorm Patch
Hello from Relic,
Our new community manager (Thunder) is out sick today, but we want to keep everyone posted and up to date on our progress, so I’m posting another update regarding the Soulstorm patch. Please help spread it around to any and all of our communities if you can help.
We continue to run into complicated snags with every turn of this patch; at this point, I do not expect us to release a patch this week. We have confirmed our fixes on almost all of the issues that we included in the pre-release notes, and I’m very happy for that. The people we assembled together have done a great job of working through systems and data that some were looking at for the first time, and I have personally been involved with this for over a month.
Unfortunately, we are having a hard time figuring out how to get around all sorts of new issues related to our digital distribution partners. We absolutely want everyone who bought Soulstorm, whether it was in-store or online, to be able to keep playing and enjoy the patch, but the myriad of different security implementations have led to a surprising number of problems.
Thanks again – we’re working hard – I appreciate your patience.
