SERVER STATUS updated 10.01.2007 - 12:24 AM - TDM server is experiencing issues.
Note - we're now running the R1Q2 netcode, which is supposed to be superior to stock. You can use EGL (http://egl.quakedev.com/)'s latest beta (grab it here (http://egl.quakedev.com/files/egl-v0.3.1-r1.exe)) to take advantage of this, and it's a pretty good source port to boot.
DM server is at 67.188.97.0:27910
CTF server is at 67.188.97.0:27920
TDM server is at 67.188.97.0:27930 - currently having troubles with TDM flag dropping after initial map and bots losing team status. Looking into what's causing it.
Please note also that all servers will show as empty unless actual players are online. So if you check the status it'll say 0/## players unless you've got live bodies on, but bots will always be present to make up for the fact that we probably won't generally have a full compliment of players (but as has been proven, even just 2 people can have a good time with a few bots to fill in the gaps).
DM notes - server should be randomly populated with a few bots at all times when it's up. Join and play with whoever, or try to get ahold of me if you'd like to change something / play with different DMflags.
CTF notes - server should be randomly populated with bots at all times. Still working out the kinks. You should be autoassigned a team upon entry.
TDM notes - type "cmd join <teamname>" at the console to join one of the available bot teams. Lists auto-populate, so if a player drops, a bot will get added to the team, and if players join a team, whichever team they join will have bots dropped from it so teams stay constantly at 4 players a side.

Okay, so I'm trying to get people playing, hence I wanted to start its own thread. So here you can find all the downloads you'll need to get started, and where you can join up to test them out to make sure everything's working spiffy.
Firstly, go to PlanetQuake's official patch list (http://planetquake.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Quake2.List&game=5&category_select_id=27) and grab The full 3.20 download (with CTF) (http://planetquake.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Quake2.Detail&id=1193). That'll get you up to speed.
Next, you can try several of the Quake 2 source ports out there, but what idol and I have been using is EGL (http://egl.quakedev.com/). It looks pretty good, runs great, and uses the R1Q2 netcode that's supposed to be superior. In any case, it works dandy and is an easy way to get yourself up to speed.
Once you've done all that, try out my two stock Eraser DM and CTF servers! I'll be adding a team DM server once I get back from running errands, and we can try a game later tonight if you guys are up for it. I'm trying to get back up to speed with all this, so bear with me.
DM server is at 67.188.97.0:27910
CTF server is at 67.188.97.0:27920
No custom maps or models yet, but give me time to sort out some stuff. Depending on what's available over at TastySpleen (http://tastyspleen.net), we may have access to some goodies that we can just download in packs and use (and then you don't have to even think about it, I can just set shit up serverside). We'll see. I'll need a little more time to fiddle.
So get set up and come play! I'm juiced because I used to live for this stuff, even if I always sucked a little, and I'd love to play with you guys. So do it. Do it now.

Instagib!!!!

Ohhh, awesome directory. Even has a lot of the old mod archives!
*EDIT*
I don't know if the bots are self adjusting or something, but damn they are brutal now.

Yeah, they were laying the serious smackdown, for sure...

I have made an illustration for why you should play Quake 2 with us:

-
Haha, that's the best graphic ever.
As for the bots, I increased the difficulty on the CTF server just because I was playing it for a while and they were way too easy, so I bumped them up a notch. DM should be one step harder than it was when we played, but self-adjusting (so they should get easier if you get your ass kicked a lot).
Julia's going to be using the system here for a few hours, but I'm going to be trying to get things rolling for a game later tonight if you guys are interested. I'm hoping some of the PQ folks will play, but that place is dead and it's short notice, so not likely. But it looks like some of them want to game, so hopefully that'll happen sometime soon.
Anyway, expect further developments.

Talk about a double suicide/murder!
-
I gotta wait a couple days before I can play. I left a case of cds that has all my games in it at my parents' house, so I'll grab them this weekend when I go home. I'm pumped to play some Q2.
-
I put in the two server addies into my Addy Book....
...But, how come when I close out Q2 and then re-open it, the servers I earlier put in my Address Book no longer there??
Is this an XP issue w/ Q2?
-
Is there any source from whence I can legally purchase / download this product?

I think you have to bind it to a script, don't ask me how to do that...its been years.
-
Are you playing stock Q2? If you are, stop being a tool and go download a decent port. It takes five minutes and generally quite streamlines everything. EGL stores the addresses just fine.
-
Is there any source from whence I can legally purchase / download this product?
Well...Steam. $10 and you download it. The nice part is with EGL and other sourceports, as long as you have the data files you dont have to run Steam to play.
-
Oh, duh.
/downloading..
-
Alright, I haven't really hated Steam until now:
It's been about 20 minutes since I paid for it. What the fuck?
-
Now you can wait for 12 people to come tell you that you shouldn't hate Steam because it's so awesome and that this must somehow be all your fault.
-
Actually, it is my fault. I wouldn't be in this situation if I DIDN'T FUCKING USE THIS GODAWFUL SHITFUCKING EXCUSE FOR A PROGRAM.
-
Well it's called Steam for a reason I guess :P
It's pretty annoying. I also just discovered a redundant option it now has: you can now add any non-Steam game to it (found under the Games menu). I can see where Valve is going with this, and I just hope to God there won't be some mad domination in the future.
Anyway, back to Q2.. Sweet I might join in!

Alright, I got everything up and running. Any up for a game in a bit?

Yeah, I saw that too, but I was afraid it would Big Brother my games.
-
Dunno if it "big brothers" your games. It just adds a shortcut to the game so you can launch it from Steam so it can show you playing...whatever...in the community features. Shows as "<NAME> is now playing non-Steam game: <GAME NAME>". It doesn't actually know what game you're running because it just goes by the name of the shortcut. You can name the shortcut anything (which was funny when waiting for the TF2 beta people were naming shortcuts "Team Fortress 2 Beta" so it looked like they were already playing). You can even add shortcuts to Photoshop and such.
PS from last nights game, using my comic above replace grenade and shotgun with rocket launcher and grenade launcher.
-
I played a couple of games today, I'm a little rusty but I can still kick all of your asses.
-
Alright, I got everything up and running. Any up for a game in a bit?
I'm gonna' be busy until later tonight, it looks like, but if you're up for it later I'm definitely game. Like post-dinnertime (maybe 8:30 pacific?).
I'll throw the servers back up in a few minutes with a couple bots for anybody that wants to test their games out or if a couple of you want somewhere to play before I get home.
-
Yeah, that works. I should probably hone my skillz a bit before I play with you guys anyways. ;)
-
DM and CTF servers are up (see first post for the addresses)! Decreased the difficulty on the bots a bit for those who feel they want a little practice before getting drilled into the ground.
Working on getting a TDM server going, but have to figure out how to configure teams first. Will edit this when it's up.
EDIT - Okay, all 3 servers are up! DM, CTF, and TDM, with bots. I'll be working on adding maps and figuring out resource packs for you guys to download that will be compatible with whatever I'm running on the servers, and I'll try to get some stuff happening for mods soon, too (preferably mods with bots so you always have someone to play with, but I'll also look at getting whatever mods are popular with you guys so we can play whatever we want when we get together).
Also, I'll work on getting further documentation for the CTF and TDM servers. Pretty sure you can set that all clients can give the bots commands (rushbase, defense, etc.). Once I figure that out, I'll post the commands in the notes for that server so you can bind them.
EDIT x2 - Please note also that all servers will show as empty unless actual players are online. So if you check the status it'll say 0/## players unless you've got live bodies on, but bots will always be present to make up for the fact that we probably won't generally have a full compliment of players (but as has been proven, even just 2 people can have a good time with a few bots to fill in the gaps).
-
I never really used my old DM MapMaker Editor for Q2 -- but, how hard or easy is the Editor to use??? Are there any other better MapMakers out there??!!?
It'd be kinda' cool if all of each one of us who are going to play together on here could make our very own DM map and we all play over some of those maps -- and when we're all done, we could have someone put them all together in some sort of "Overwritten Map Pack" for people to download and stuff.
I'm betting if Que did a map, "Que's Map" could be quite....interesting...
-
I actually have a custom map idea. Not sure how it will play once its built, but it looks cool in my head.
-

Ooooh....that sounds kinda' experimental!
It'd be cool to see how it is, after it comes to fruition and all. :)
-
That was awesomely fun. Thanks for playing, guys (and for anybody else who wants to play, nick, idol, ghandi, and MyD are still on the DM server... but I gotta' run errands and let the wife have the rig for a while).
-
So, EGL is very pretty but todays fragfest was very hectic and I was getting a low framerate. Like, in the 20s. So I switched over to the R1Q2 client to try it out. Not nearly as pretty (in fact, it looks like regular Q2), but there were zero framerate issues. The only problem I did have was stuttering due to 3 people firing the hyperblaster in the same room lagging me.
Also, R1Q2 loads maps in a blink. I'm practically in the game as soon as the mapchange happens.
-
Loads of fun by my internet keeps booting me. I have to reconnect twice a map. And apparently Q2 is terrible for pinging out. It freezes half the time.
Anyways...I'm deadly with those grenades. I haven't quite gotten the timer down on the fuse yet but soon enough I will be a surgeon with them.
-
Guys, this was awesome. I had a blast w/ all of you guys. This brings back old school days of Q2 and Q3:A DM'ing that I did, back in the day -- loved those days!
Would definitely love to do this again.
I'm on vacation (from work) all next week, so I'll be looking for somethin' fun to do... :)
-
That was fun, it reminds me of when I was 14 and used to blow off my homework to play CTF.
-
Actually, it is my fault. I wouldn't be in this situation if I DIDN'T FUCKING USE THIS GODAWFUL SHITFUCKING EXCUSE FOR A PROGRAM.
hahaa..
Well it's called Steam for a reason I guess Tongue
When I read that, I chuckled because it immediately made sense to me. However I thought about it, and now it doesn't. :P
I unfortunately don't have Quake II or would have joined you lot.
-
Buy it! Do it now!
Sorry if you guys tried to play earlier and I wasn't here. We stayed out much later than planned.
-
We should play. I'm thoroughly drunk and kind of want to kick some ass. :)
-
Heh. I don't think anybody else is awake. But I'll frag for a bit if you want.
-
Idol will join us. I have faith in his insomnia.
-
What do you want to play? DM, CTF, TDM? Not that there are many more choices here, heh.
-
You know, I can't get CTF to load. It will never load the map and you don't have it available to download. Thoughts?
-
Go into your Quake2 directory, then the CTF directory. Make a copy of pak0.pak and rename it something like zCTF-pak0.pak (thats what I called mine) and move it into the baseq2 directory. Then the maps load.
-
I was going to say you have to start the game with +set game ctf in the command line, but if you join the server I didn't think you should have to do that. I'm pretty sure I haven't when I've tested the server out. I'm confused now.
...
Yeah, just tried it. Didn't have to do a thing but load up EGL and connect.
And idol just posted when I was posting this... and what he says is odd, because I'm 99% sure I didn't copy the .PAK anywhere.
-
Yeah, its wierd but it worked for me. I think its because the server is EraserCTF and not just CTF. Like my autoexec.cfg would not load unless I made and put it in the directory (Eraser, EraserCTF, EraserTDM).
-
Oh, does the server DIR have to be the same? Fuck, I never even thought of that. haha... what a dumbass. I just quickly made copies so that I could have unique information in case I got tweek happy. Just figured it was all serverside and clients wouldn't get affected.
-
I did what you said Idol, and it still says that it cant load q2ctf3.bsp
I guess I just don't have the map?
-
Try throwing the PAK in a directory called "EraserCTF", mate. Let's see if that works.
So why does DM work and stuff? Even though I'm loading out of the Eraser directory, it still just recognizes as stock DM? I'm confused again.
-
I don't know. The other game types work.
Also, that didn't work either. I'm really confused.
-
Bloody hell? Let me try just turning on downloads.
EDIT - Let's just meet on IRC again and see if we can get this going.
-
You have to put all map files in the baseq2 directory and give each pak it's own specific number.
I found some ctf maps here here (http://landhell.fpp.pl/quake2/index.php?PAGE=main&DIR=maps/ctf)
-
Downloaded those maps, haven't installed em yet.
I also remembered I had a PC Gamer CD where they had a bunch of files for various old games for online play, Quake 2 included. So I dug it out to see whats on there.
Classic map remakes I take it are from Q1:
DM3
DM4
hipdm1 (looks like two remakes of this one)
Models:
Astroboy
Crackwhore
PKnight
Marine
Johnny the Homicidal Maniac
Evil Ernie
The Fonz
Forgotten One
couple others
A bunch of DM maps and skins for both the default male and female models. I'll see how well I can compress the stuff and maybe upload it somewhere.
-
Well, there's also the infamous Q2PMP which comes in like 20 downloads or so, chock full of like... every model, ever. I downloaded a bunch, but some of them kind of suck. I was thinking we should maybe just find the good ones and then put a pack together like you said, let people download and choose from those if they so desired.

My God -- the file size must be HUGE!
-
Yeah, good idea. These skins/models are all pretty good so I'll see about making a pack with them just to start out with until I can download more. Great part is the skins are tiny...hehe. Hmmm...they seem easy to edit too. Custom skins? zomg...
Well, the skins and models come to 8MB in 7zip, 11MB in plain zip. If theres any interest I'll put it up someplace. This is just the models and skins.
*EDIT*
Here are the male skins (http://user.mc.net/~pbsmith/files/male.zip), only 400k. Extract to \baseq2\players (so all the .pcx files go in the male directory)
-
I have webspace if we need it. But you'd have to upload it to me first if we did it that way. So whatever works. The more you can preview and try out the better, and I can try to integrate them into the servers, get bots to use them and stuff (I think there's an autotool that assigns them random values for any models you don't have assigned). But yeah, the time it takes to preview stuff can be a pain, so if there's anything you can check out and approve beforehand that I don't have to look at, that's awesome. Let me know what and where and then I can see about integrating it.
Also, I think Ghandi talked about playing again tonight. If there's interest, I know I won't be available until probably like 11 or so pac time. Julia's gonna' be on Eternal Sonata and stuff. But the servers are still up (and have been since yesterday since I don't have much reason to take them down), so anybody else who wants to play either then or beforehand... go for it!
EDIT - Cool, idol. I'll download those and see if I can get bots to use them.
-
I should be down to play tonight. Woohoo!
So yeah, I'll download a bunch of models and let you know if the good ones. I found a place with models so heres the ones I saw that I liked:
pkight (http://www.gamers.org/pub/idgames2/planetquake/q2pmp/pknight.zip)
Marine (http://www.gamers.org/pub/idgames2/planetquake/q2pmp/Marine.zip)
Johnny the Homicidal Maniac (http://www.gamers.org/pub/idgames2/planetquake/q2pmp/JtHMv10.zip) (I can see Que using this one)
crackwhore (http://www.gamers.org/pub/idgames2/planetquake/q2pmp/crackwhore.zip) (I remember this one being popular back when I played)
Doom Cyberdemon (http://www.gamers.org/pub/idgames2/planetquake/q2pmp/cd2000.zip)
-
Cool, thanks Idol. But we have to make sure we can get stuff into a pack for everyone to download to save having to grab them from the server. So yeah.
Anyway, thanks for the skins. Bots have been created for them and the servers have been updated with them (some new ones are on the CTF and DM servers right now), and now we all have some more shit to choose from if we get tired of the standard skins. I need to make a custom one for myself like I used to do (everyone at the FNFF had a custom skin or model they used, so we always knew who was who every time we played).
-
I won't be playing tonight, unfortunately. I need to get up early to write a research paper which is due tomorrow.
-
I won't be playing tonight, unfortunately. I need to get up early to write a research paper which is due tomorrow.
One of the reasons I love Q2 so much is because I used to blow off my homework in high school to play. Blow off your responsibilities as well, its in the spirit of playing the game.
-
Normally I would say yes, but I have already blown off my responsibilities. This is a research paper and I haven't started the research as of yet. In about 15 minutes I will be t-minus 12 hours until the deadline. Sleep is not mandatory. It's going to be a grueling stretch to the finish line. Will I get it done? Can Ghandi finish this paper? Tune in tomorrow for details.
-
You can tell us all about it tomorrow over a round of CTF.
-
Quick note, Que. It seems the TDM server is running regular DM.
Also, you know what would be an awesome DM map? Remake Booty Bay from WoW.
-
You can tell us all about it tomorrow over a round of CTF.
Indeed. I can only hope that an excellent story will be told. It's now t minus 10 1/2 hours and intoxication is imminent.
Also, I heartily endorse Idol's quest to make a Quake2 map.
-
Good luck, Ghandi!
And yes idol, that map would be awesome. Make it. Now.
As for the TDM server... I don't know what the deal is. I hadn't hopped on to try that one yet, but I was noticing that after the first round, the bots lose their team tags. Apparently the TDM flag somehow gets reset between maps and the teams aren't re-added and populated. Which is weird. I'll have to look into it, but I'm pretty sure I used to play with regular map rotations and teams back in my Eraser days. Not sure why it's doing that (when the server goes up the teams spawn just fine).
-
Are we playing now? I like playing you guys because you're easier to kill and you don't camp like all the other assholes that play this game. I'm glad this server has an unauthorized, yet obvious moral standard when it comes to etiquette.
-
Unfortunately it's too late for me at this point. I need to hit the sack soon. I'm sure we'll be playing more soon, though, as it seems like interest is still high for the time being.
-
So I'm downloading the Q2PMP files. Got 1-13 last night. Sorting through them now. First pass is going through and dropping the ones that are just kinda crappy or I don't think anyone will want to play as. Once those are gone I'll mark which ones are just plain "cool" looking. I should have a nice list compiled later that I'll add to as I get the rest of the Q2PMP files.
And holy damn there are a lot of transformers and other assorted giant robots.
*UPDATE*
Theres some damn cool models in here. One I'm going to make CTF skins for because its so cool (should be easy...simple recolor because the single skin for it is mostly red, so I'll blue-ify it and we'll be set)
*UPDATE 2*
Current list is at 27 models. Some may be cut further, but some are definite keepers. I also have the last 6 parts of q2pmp to download and check out.
How important are CTF skins for this? If you choose a model that doesn't have the CTF skins does it switch you to the default male model when you play CTF servers? Otherwise you'd have the same skin on both teams, very confusing.
-
Anyone up for a game tonight?
-
Sure. I'm going to idle in IRC (downloading another model pack and testing out the new Zelda).
-
You're awesome, idol. And I'm 90% sure that models without CTF skins will just default out to another model. We can test that later if you want. Should be an easy test.
I'm definitely up for a game later. Gotta' go out for a bit, but should be able to play like maybe... 8 or so pac time? Later is certainly fine, too if that's better.
-
That sounds good for me. I'll be on IRC in a bit, probably around that time.
-
Bleh, my internet crapped out on me and my computer wasn't helping things. It's really slow right now, it doesn't look like I'll be on tonight. Kick D's ass for me while I'm gone. :)
-
Kick D's ass for me while I'm gone. :)
That wouldn't be too hard for him to do....
-
Ah don't get down on yourself D. You were juking a lot more once you realized your autorun was off! You capped a flag, and got out of the base twice when I was on you.
-
What's good and powerful for Q2 MapMaking Programs/SDK's out there??????
EDIT:
Is there a way that when we do CTF, players on "Red" will be forced to wear Red" while players on "Blue" get forced to wear Blue????
It's kinda annoying to be shooting and realize, "Oh, it's Idol...he's on my team..."
-
They already are forced to wear red/blue? Thats how everything looked to me.
And if you want a map editor, its GTKRadiant (http://www.qeradiant.com/).
-
Yeah, the colors are right, it just can be a little hard to see them. The colors aren't quite bright enough on some of the darker maps.
-
And by "darker maps" you mean "every map for Quake 2". :P
-
Has anyone found any good Quake2 mods? I'm gonna look for some good ones that we can play.
-
Action Quake 2
Rocket Arena
Dirty
Leper
Lithium
Freeze Tag (omg yes)
-
I was looking up Freeze Tag and I came across This Site (http://www.angelfire.com/music5/jdog546/Quake2.html). Dear lord. Help us all.
Do you have a url?

Never post anything like that again. Ever.

Sorry I haven't gotten my act together with this stuff. Been really busy and haven't had a lot of time to set anything else up.
