After a staggering Five Months worth of beta testing, Defcon has finally gone gold. The master disk has been produced, checked, and sent away for manufacturing. The downloads are ready. We are on schedule for launch at 6.00pm GMT, Friday 29th September. It's all rather exciting.
One of the UK games magazines wanted to cover the exact moment of the Gold Master being produced. To "Capture the atmosphere of the moment", as they put it. However they changed their minds as soon as we told them what was actually involved. The truth is it's a special moment for us when we make a master disk, but nothing special actually happens. We fire up Nero, burn some disks, run tests on them, then put them in an envelope and walk to the post office. It often seems like there should be something bigger involved - like a big red button that we can press, that sets everything into motion while fireworks go off out the window and a live orchestra plays the 1812 Overture.

Uh....no kinda. So far there wont be boxes in retail stores. However you can order it direct from Introversion here (http://store.introversion.co.uk/). Ordering from them will allow you to download the game on Friday (this download does not require Steam at all), plus they will ship you a copy of the game in a box.

Yeah, fuck Steam. You can pay not that much more and get yourself a nice box in addition to a Steam-free download. Would be worth an extra 20 bucks to me.

I downloaded it. I normally dislike RTS games but this is pretty awesome. I don't know if there's a way to choose your country though. There's no MP in my version, just single player. Seems cool though, very atmospheric.

This is annoying. I preordered off of Introversion's site, but I haven't gotten the email that's supposed to give me my key and download link yet. I know they already charged my credit card, so I should be on the list. Plus, they must have gotten pretty hammered because you can't get into the store portion of their site that would allow you to actually download the game yourself.

There was an issue on Steam with being unable to authorise. Didnt matter much...could still play in demo mode. Restarted the game a few times and it eventually took. They were getting hammered.

I won't be getting it, I don't think. I'm too fucking poor and I'm not even remotely interested in looking at a game right now. Too depressed to want to have fun. Plus I want to wait until I have the money to get Darwinia + Uplink with their boxes as well, so... that's like $50 or something. I don't have that.

I went through the demo and got slaughtered in a 3 player FFA so far. The game's pretty fucked up, but in a good way. It seems the trick to winning, score wise at least, is to get in a good first strike and rack up a lot of points before you're too far into the hole and there are still meaty tragets.
Cool stuff. I imagine multiplayer will feel a lot like Moonbase Commander. Not a lot of pomp and circumstance, just good fun with a few deep elements. I like. Plus, we could probably actually play with Idol.

Urg. I guess I may grab it after all. It's the fucking weekend and I don't want to sit around and mope. I want to have fun. But Okami is too light-hearted. I can't bring myself to try to enjoy it when I feel this shitty. Blowing stuff up sounds like... better.
EDIT - So I cracked. Let's play sometime. I feel the need to be blown up by people I know and love.

I checked it out.. I love the style, and I love the way it's all like looking at a satellite feedback from the command HQ display :P But I don't know, the game is a little too slow for me, even with time compression at max. Again, it's a game I'd love to watch, not play :P I know the visuals are simple, but I love them! It's so minimalistic, it's beautiful!
I really like Introversion's work.. Darwinia was awesome.

Yeah. This would be like the perfect LAN game, provided you could keep your opponents from walking over and looking at the screen. You could just waste a whole night on one game and there'd be must commotion over every single hit.

So this game kicks ass. Sy, Qu, and I had a couple games. Its strangely calm and exciting at the same time.

Yeah, it's totally bizarre. On the one hand its totally intense trying to micromanage things and find weak points, but on the other hand it's just... sit back and watch the shit hit the fan.
So I clobbered the snot out of both Sy and idol on the first game, but they both put me deep in the ground on the next game, with idol coming out pretty far on top. Good stuph. Will be interesting to see how the game and community develop over the coming months. But I definitely want to play more with you guys. That was fun.

I have to admit, I am very impressed with the simplicity of this game. And one subtle thing that I love as well is the music! It makes me feel at ease while I launch nuclear assaults :D

Oh, found out something cool. I can start Defcon without starting Steam. Just copy the Steam.dll file to the directory and run the .exe directly.
Also, I can download the regular version of Defcon and just copy my authkey file to it and it will also work.

Is it a multiplayer only game?

It's meant for multiplayer, but you can add in CPU opponents. Hell, you can just spectate while the CPUs go at it. That's actually surprisingly fun.
And that's cool idol. Very cool indeed. Not enough to make me regret ordering the box, but still great. =)

I didnt see an option for a boxed copy when i bought...i thought they were all for boxed ones.

There was one link that sent me somewhere else, and I got a different price. When I bought from them, though, it was I think $17.50 for the download + box. I'm not sure. Trying to get to their site now to check, but it's swamped or something. I just remember it was $42 for both Defcon and Uplink (rebought Uplink because I lost it a while ago to a friend), and like $5 shipping for the boxes.
