Seems like it (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/49317), at least in Europe. Removed two USB ports and the media card reader, and of course a smaller hard drive. The strangest part? No backwards compatibility. Strange because the new model PS3s do its BC all in software anyway, so what are they really saving by removing it?

It seems that the lower models for the PS3 are almost like bare bones.
With the 360, you don't lose much that you can't go out and buy back if necessary. If you went with a lower model PS3, you screw yourself in the long run since you've lose certain hardware and software capabilities.

There must be a "Foot Shooting" department at Sony.
"Guys, no one is buying PS3s! What are we going to do?!"
"Well, we could trim the model down and cut the price, that should help sell units."
Foot Shooting dept: "Ok, but be sure t completely gimp the system to the point that no one would actually want it."

I might consider getting this if it happens because I don't really give a shit about the USB ports, the media card readers, or the backwards compatibility. I have my PS2 for backwards compatibility and I don't own anything with media cards and if I ever do, that's what my computer is for. I just want to play games, download a demo here and there, and watch the occasional movie, this machine does that.

At this point, the *only* reason I would consider getting a PS3 is if my PS2 breaks (which it's slowly doing) and I can't fix it myself (or if I try and break it entirely). There is no other reason, period. So yeah, for me this is about the dumbest thing I've ever heard, and considering what I've heard from some others, I think a lot of people are in my position as well.
I think Sony is just going to plain lose the fuck out of this generation. Maybe they can turn it around with the PS4.
