Or something like that. (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/07/us/07halo.html?ei=5088&en=7ec896ee5b886911&ex=1349409600&adxnnl=1&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&adxnnlx=1191787811-tglpTy8Q8dhJcFDEM6n8Sg)
Churches using Halo nights to reach out to kids. Kind of odd they have no problems letting minors play an M rated game about shooting others. The irony being the main enemy in the games is the Covenant, a culture of religious zealots. I see what they are trying to do but...hell of a game to do it with.
Also,
In one letter to parents, Mr. Barbour wrote that God calls ministers to be “fishers of men.”
“Teens are our ‘fish,” he wrote. “So we’ve become creative in baiting our hooks.”
Uh...no comment.

Yeah, I read the article a few days ago. The thing that really struck me was when someone against it said, “If you want to connect with young teenage boys and drag them into church, free alcohol and pornographic movies would do it." Yes, video games = booze + porn.
-
My biggest surprise after reading that story is how little I oppose it. I have no problem with Christianity this side of fundamentalist nut jobs, and I have no problem with fictional violence in videogames. I see nothing absurd or dangerous in any of it. If this works for them, let them have at it.
-
Yeah, I'm not really against them doing it...just seems like a strange choice in game (content/rating-wise) to use.
-
Doesn't bother me any. A few times I brought PCs to my old youth group back when I actually went to church (it gets rarer and rarer since Julia and I split from the last place we used to go to) and we actually did original Quake DM. It was awesome. It wasn't a big thing to draw anyone in, it was just a couple of us that thought it would be fun. The people who ran the thing were cool, and nobody protested. A lot of the kids there played games (that's really where I turned hardcore in gaming after a youth minister loaned me Secret of Mana for SNES, which is one of my favorite games of all time), and families didn't seem to have much problem differentiating hardcore violence or things that set out to be raunchy and disturbing with stuff that was just meant to be fun. Heh, and I was Street Fighter 2 champion at the church youth tournament 2 years in a row (it was just a bunch of us crowding into the youth pastor's tiny apartment). The first year I kicked so much ass with Chun Li they wouldn't let me use her again and so I had to win as Ken.

Couldn't they have picked The Darkness or something??!!?
-
Clearly they picked the game around it's popularity. I seriously doubt that The Darkness would have the same effect.

Yeah, no shit...
...But my wise-ass remark was made for a point. I'm saying they should've picked something a lil' more violent. :P

You win this battle...
-
Why? It's not about violence, or any kind of darkness. It's about what harmless fun captures the teens in droves. You made that point perfectly well.
-
Yeah I was half being sarcastic and half not wanting to debate it.

I don't.
-
D doesn't feel. He is a soulless robot.
Also, those videos are really, really weird.
-
He doesn't feel. But he feeds on our confusion and utter bewilderment. Plus, like our total frustration. Which is frustrating in itself. And he knows it. Damn robots.
-
I am not a robot.
And I am human.
With a heart, too.

Typical robot jibber-jabber.
ROBOTS DON'T HAVE HEARTS.

I'm not a robot.
I'm a human w/ lungs.
