Malaysia firm's 'Muslim car' plan
By Robin Brant
BBC News, Kuala Lumpur

The Malaysian carmaker Proton has announced plans to develop an "Islamic car", designed for Muslim motorists.

Proton is planning on teaming up with manufacturers in Iran and Turkey to create the unique vehicle.

The car could boast special features like a compass pointing to Mecca and a dedicated space to keep a copy of the Koran and a headscarf.

The idea came during a visit to the Middle East by a delegation of Malaysian politicians and businessmen.

Malaysian press reports say officials in Iran originally suggested the idea.

Safety features or fuel economy is one way of selling a car, but Proton thinks vehicles designed specifically for Muslims across the world represent a huge gap in the market.

Proton is the most dominant car on the streets here but the company has suffered recently after the government allowed more foreign cars to be imported.

The firm has been in talks recently with VW about a takeover by the German car giant.

Yeah...

So it comes with a broken compass that always points east and a glovebox?

Wha? I'm muslim and I think that's kind of a waste of resources.. Cars are cars. They already have "glove compartments" which you can put a veil in anyway. You can buy a compass, even a Mecca Compass.

There's an inherent conflict anyway: A truly muslim car would completely environmentally friendly. So unless that car runs on electricity or alcohol (pardon the irony), its emissions are harmful to the world we are here to care for.

We're supposed to be decreasing the number of cars in the world!

A Mecca compass (or prayer compass) is just a regular compass, so it always points North, but it has markings that indicated the degrees at which Mecca is directed.

Gee, really?  Because it was *such* the brilliant idea, I thought it surely must have come down from some supreme business guru.  No, really.  Honest.  I swear.  There's no way I'm being sarcastic.  You can tell because of how many statements of earnestness I have here at the end.  Yep.

:P the only difference between this and other cars is a compass?

Also I thought the dashboard was a pretty good place for storing stuff. Guess I was wrong.

Come to think of it the last three cars we've had have all had compasses built into the dashboard.

I kind of expected the Muslim Bicycle to come first.

Is there a Jewish car? A Christian car? A Buddhist car? A Hindu car? What is it that makes the Muslim car unique? The title?? Oh let me guess, a self-destruct sequence! Ha Ha Ha. F*cking fanatic jackasses.

Next up:  the fundamentalist Muslim car, complete with optional factory-installed explosives and vertically mounted AK-47s that fire into the sky when the "horn" is honked.

Also the Jewish car, complete with street vacuum that automatically sucks up any change left on the roadway, and automatically sorts it into neat stacks, ready to be rolled.

Then there is the Catholic car, complete with a Garmin navigational device with a map pre-marked with church locations so they can be easily avoided on Sundays.

The Hindu car is just like a regular car. It just comes with a really kick ass warranty plan. When it dies you get another car from the dealership that looks slightly different.

My entire intent in creating it was for religious jokes. I'm glad it delivered.

The Hindu car worships motorcycles , roller skates, walking sticks, wheelchairs, and other inferior modes of transportation as its god.

No one fucking knows why.

HAha I was gonna say it worships the milk truck! :P It also believes in an eight-wheeler somewhere out there ;D

Once a year, for one month the muslim car can go without fuel (during the day).
