Title: Question on health insurance/medical privacy
Post by: shock on Monday, November 19, 2007, 06:00:36 AM
I am currently under my dad's health insurance plan.

If I go in for a doctor's appointment and get prescribed something, does this show up on anywhere that would be accessible to him or any other family members?  I know there are all kinds of medical privacy stuff, but I'm not sure how it works with family's sharing plans.  I'm 20, by the way.

I'm not sure how it goes in the States, however according to the policies here any significant medical conditions will only be known to your legal guardian (or principal holder of the insurance plan) should you be under the age limit (depends on your locations and laws), if it's 18 you're safe and if it's 21 then chances are it will show up on the legal guardian's papers.

Aside from that you can usually have some kind of arrangement with your doctor and see if he/she can help you out and keep it more discreet.

I'll have to check more thoroughly with my dad (he's in Insurance) to get you a more conclusive answer.

I would check with them.  Nothing beats the horse's mouth.  That's assuming they don't lie to you, or give you wrong information because they're incompetent.

Well, I called and after a while, got an answer:  It turns out the policyholder is sent documentation of an office visit, but it will not detail any specifics of the visit (assuming there is no other charges, like an MRI or something).  When it comes to prescriptions, they are only told that there is a prescription, not what it is or what the diagnosis is.

Whoo!

Damn it, I thought I told you to stop having sex with Pug.  You know he's disease ridden, and yet you cannot control yourself!
