I read this yesterday.  Pretty scary what's happening to the world.  The masses are afraid of their own shadows and those in charge do nothing but perpetuate and intensify those fears because it's good for political business.  Fuck 'em all, I say.  I hope they choke on their own cowardice.

That makes me angry a little bit for some reason.  It's rather unbelievable in my opinion.

Quote
It was to do with a famous scene, often repeated, called Alistair Cookie and the parody “Monsterpiece Theater.” Alistair Cookie, played by Cookie Monster, had a pipe which he later ate.

Modern producers felt that modelled the wrong behaviour. It encouraged smoking and eating pipes. Initially they re-shot the scenes and later it was dropped.

I have to admit, as a kid I often pretended to smoke a pipe because I wanted to be like Sherlock Holmes.

And do you smoke now?  Have you ever?  My guess is no.

No I've actually never even put a cigarette in my mouth. But that was because of the environment my family created.

My point is that while they are wrong, I can see their thought process.

However all this wouldn't be a moot point if the parents in the world were as competent as they should be. The solution is parents who know how to do their job, and not censorship.

Smoking in new movies gets them an automatic R rating.  Did you know that?  That's why I'm not too surprised about the spineless behavior here.  I would give them as big a fight as possible, though, if only to keep them from training all their guns on the next witch hunt: food.

Which is stupid, because the fact that they are R rated means that kids automatically want to see them. Or, at least, the kids that are susceptible to things like that.

It's much worse than that.  It invalidates the R rating.  If Saw and Sherlock Holmes get the same rating, then it's useless.

Exactly what Cobra said.  I don't even pay attention to ratings anymore because most of the time, they make no sense at all.  It's almost to the point where I can get offended by movies kids are supposed to be fine watching, and find movies I'd want my kids to watch because they're timeless classics but get rated up for stupid crap.  It isn't quite there yet, but the trend moves toward that every day.

True, but let's be honest - there's not much to them to begin with. This just breaks an already broken system.
