In games. My only real experience would be with the Orange Box games and Gears of War, but I feel satisfied when that pop-up comes on screen and tells me I just did something good. I'm not one of those people who cares what other people have done, nor do I really check the achievements because I like the surprise aspect of it, but I certainly think it is something very simple that could give games a bit more replay value.

I like the idea of them, too.
I don't feel like I need to do them all, but if I do a few -- hey, that's cool!!!
It's cool to aim for them...
...but I find it really cool when I don't aim for one, and suddenly get that pop-up that I completed an Achievement!!!
It's like "Oh, cool! I did it without trying!" :P
I also do like that Valve plans to add MORE Achievements soon to TF2, as well; to add more REPLAY Value and all. Very cool.
I hope Valve keeps adding achievement to their games; especially to Portal.

They're popular for good reason. I like those popups too. I don't torture myself with getting every one, but I will chase the ones that seem worthwhile.

For some odd reason my G4WL refuses to log any of my acievments from Gears of War. I've even finished the game twice now while being signed in and connected.. But still nada.
I don't really care that much about the achievments but what's bugging me is that something is not working as it is 'supposed' to.

Achievements are kind of neat. I like shooting for some of the Portal ones, and I was all excited when I got some of the TF2 ones. But I like that there is no "gamescore" on Steam achievements. The point of getting an achievement is just to do it, not to raise some BS "score" that means nothing.

Achievements dont do anything for me. I hate it when there are achievements that dont require anything more than going so far into the game. Now if I earned microsoft points off of them, I would love them.

I like seeing the pop-up, but yeah it doesn't really do anything much for me either.
The only game where I ever felt a good effort vs. reward ratio was Goldeneye. By playing the game on harder difficulty levels you were exposed to new objectives and you also had the earnable cheats and the extra levels you could unlock. My greatest gaming achievement ever is beating Aztec on 00 Agent.
For whatever reason, I've never been as into any other game. Oh I've loved other games, but I never tortured myself getting nigh-impossible cheats and beating super hard levels on super hard difficulty levels like I did with Goldeneye. I never have been able to figure out why that is exactly, but I guess it does have something to do with the tangible rewards you reap.

I agree with scott that a tangible reward is always better than just a pop-up. That said, I do think that achievements extend the life of games and help you to sort of figure out how to push the game to its extremities (if done correctly) when you aren't hardcore enough to obsess about finding every last thing you can do. A lot of action games have fun ones like "get a 10-count air juggle combo" or something like that, and while you might do that without the achievement, then it's just... hey, I did something neat. If you set a milestone for it, it can become a goal, and games are all about goals. So yeah, I think they're good things as long as the goals are fun and worthwhile, but any achievement will pale in comparison to an actual unlockable item of some sort. A combination of both can be good, too.

I agree that the overall gamerscore is meaningless. What's useful is the list of games with their individual scores. It lets me get the whole picture very quickly of where I put in the time and effort, and what I've left behind unfinished. I don't care if anyone else sees this. It only matters to me.

Seconded. That's a nice feature, and yes, the gamerscore is very stupid, and only exists to make people want to buy more games to increase it. What BS.

The Witcher should have an Achievement for anyone who can kill Beast in less than 5 seconds. :P
