The Japanese did something similar for Windows called OS-tan, I think, and created a girl character for each version of Windows from 95-XP, they were drawn a little older though.

I don't understand what the big deal is anyway.  Japan is known for this kind of stuff, has been for a long time.  It's a cultural difference.  Also, they have that "super-deformed" style where they'll mix images of adult characters with more cartoony child-looking images of the same characters in the same manga storyline.

Why?  Why does that surprise you?  It's par for the course.  Is there something in that image beyond the art itself that I'm missing?

I need to take exception with any drawn art being called pedophilia anyway.  The production of kiddie porn involving real kids is absolutely despicable.  Fry the bastards involved.  But what comes out of someone's head through a brush, as far as I am concerned, cannot be censored in any way.  Doing so is a worse crime in my view than whatever ends up on the canvas.  I subscribe to this freedom of expression principle I've grown up with, wholeheartedly.

Where I come from, freedom of speech is freedom of speech and child porn is child porn. You can call it "art" if you want: but according to the Law in this country, your "art" will land you in jail.

This is the debate that has raged on ever since the Supreme Court decided that obscene speech is not protected speech, that pornography is not protected art.  Even conceding their point of view, which not everyone does, that leaves the issue of who the hell gets to decide what's art and what's pornography.  "Community standards" are a ridiculous test.  If you're not a felon in New York, why should you be a felon in Cincinnati?  The Constitution, and specifically the Bill of Rights are the same in both places.

I'm one of the people who lined up to buy a membership to the Museum of Art downtown here, as support, when the gestapo which was the county sheriff's office at the time descended on it and treated everyone involved with a Maplethorpe gay art exhibit as criminals.  It was an embarrassment on a national level.  The art was nothing I wanted to see, and I'm not a fan of art museums to begin with.  This was strictly outrage on my part, and if anything, my position on this has only strengthened in the years since.  A country which can deprive you of your liberty because of what you say, write or draw is not a free country by any means.

I'm on both sides.  As an artistic person and person interested in art, plenty of it edgy, I feel very similar to the way Cobra does.  That said, I can't agree that there should never be any rules.  The problem in making them has already been detailed by Cobra, and it's a depressing topic to me on all fronts.  It's been said that a country has to step in and start policing its own people when the people stop policing themselves, and that's what I see in the youth of America today.  It has nothing to do with being free to express themselves, it has to do with indulging in fucking degeneracy just for the sake of indulging in it.  There's so much filth out there it disgusts me.  But again... where do you draw the line?  Who makes that call?  What rights should artists be afforded when doing work that falls out of the "normal" range?

But yeah, I don't find anything Wind's posted particularly interesting or strange.  Frankly, there's plenty of similar stuff in America.  Violence and sex go together, and war machines/giant robots/fantasy monsters are often sexualized in all parts of the world.  I don't deny that the Japanese have some significant problems when it comes to perversion (and I would say that yes, they're problems, not simply cultural differences), but that doesn't extend to every last thing.  They also do some incredibly beautiful stuff that's unique to their country.

Can we not just all agree that even though we're well aware of Japanese sexual deviance it's still something we should judge and make fun of? This includes everything from the rape porn to the fact that they have to turn every abstract and inanimate object into an underage girl cartoon so they can mentally fuck it while riding the bullet train to the mall to pick up some used panties.
