Title: Good cover songs
Post by: PyroMenace on Sunday, January 27, 2008, 05:47:18 AM
I always enjoyed a good cover song if it shows a new side to a song. Like Nevermore's Sound of Silence and Fear Factory's Cars.

Kelly Sweet's cover of Dream On Im find is really awesome too. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTC2oEcZM4k)

Try MxPx's On the Cover (http://www.amazon.com/Cover-MxPx/dp/B000003ZF4/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1201454479&sr=8-1), which is probably my favorite cover album of all time.

Who are you and what have you done with Que?

I'm a big fan of The Bouncing Souls version of Better Things (song 6)

Hey, I have quite varied musical tastes.  I grew up on MxPx and tiny underground punk shows in garages and warehouses where you'd see 8 bands for five bucks.

About cover songs, hmmm....always a touchy subject.

Usually -- some covers sound great, some just flat-out freakin' suck.

Some cover songs I've actually liked:
--Conquest by The White Stripes
(original by Patti Page)
--Enjoy The Silence by Lacuna Coil
(original by Depeche Mode)
--Sweet Dreams by Marilyn Manson
(original by Eurythmics)
--Personal Jesus by Marilyn Manson
(original by Depeche Mode)
--Tainted Love by Marilyn Manson
(original by Gloria Jones)

Hmmm...I think the only hip-hop cover album I can think of is In Tha Beginning...There Was Rap, which I liked a lot.

I'm sure I could come up w/ some more covers I've liked, later on...

Yea it really surprised me too that Que likes MxPx. Though I went through a ska phase back in high school, so I can understand that.

The Dismemberment Plan - Crush.

someone else mentioned this band recently round here - i'm not sure if i mentioned this cover at the time. the song in question was originally a dance track (i think), which was then covered and made famous by Mandy Moore. this version is far less insipid and actually quite sinister.

anyway, here's the mp3 (http://robosexual.typepad.com/glob/files/the_dismemberment_plan_crush.mp3).

I just happen to have liked the song's he's covered.

I'm not a big fan of his stuff, though.

OK, now I officially love Kelly Sweet (http://www.kelly-sweet.com/?gclid=CKSvm_vXnJECFQ8lHgod60YwwA).  Another good cover on her album is Love Song (http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=ogb6x6BZDUg).  That live version may not have the angelic layered voices of the studio version, but otherwise sounds about identical.  The girl performs live as well as in a studio, the mark of a true musical artist.

Other cover songs I've liked:

--"Wild Rose" by Chiasm
(currently streaming on her MySpace Page) (http://www.myspace.com/chiasm)
(original by Nick Cave)

--"A Girl Called Harmony" by Chiasm
(original by Attrition)

I've always been quite fond of Alize's cover of the song "La Isla Bonita" originally sung by Que's favorite oldschool diva Madonna.  ;D

I also like that cover. Well...the video of that cover. And it can be muted and it wont matter.

Ok, this is one of my current favorites. First--about the band. It's a sweet band. They do Blue Grass music, but this guys and gal are our age. They're pretty awesome. I got to see them live a couple years ago at a theater in downtown Columbus, and they were amazing.

I'm having trouble getting a direct link. But scroll to the 23 song down or so.

Anyway, this is a sweet cover....

Nickel Creek - Toxic......yes...that "Toxic" (http://hypem.com/search/nickel%20creek/1/)

Sweet right?

I'll vouch for Nickel Creek.  It isn't true bluegrass by any stretch of the imagination, but more kinda' acousticy rock with a bluegrass touch.  You wouldn't think it would be the kind of thing I'd dig, but I fucking love this CD (http://www.amazon.com/Why-Should-Fire-Nickel-Creek/dp/B0009ML2BU/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1203457670&sr=8-3) and heartily recommend it to pretty much anyone.

"Because" - Across the Universe (http://youtube.com/watch?v=nDtfTf2cHB0).  This is only one of over 30 Beatles songs in the movie, which I found spellbinding.  It probably is my single favorite, although there are several which are wonderful, with the odd one here and there that didn't work well.  ("Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite" was awful, though the accompanying imagery was compelling.)

Edit:  A bit of trivia:  Why 9 people in the video?  Because it's a 9-part harmony, although only 3 Beatles performed it.  Lennon, McCartney and Harrison overdubbed themselves twice to handle all 9 parts.

I'm a big fan of Pearl Jam cover songs.

Notably:

I Won't Back Down (Tom Petty)
I Believe in Mircales (The Ramones)
Crazy Mary (Victoria Williams)
Masters of War (Bob Dylan)

The Peter Frampton version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps I also love. I prefer it to the Beatles version, though I'm not much of a Beatles fan at all.

You didn't like Bono's "I Am the Walrus"? Thats my favorite song from the movie and my second favorite part ("I Want You" wins the numero uno spot).

I love both of those as well.  "I Want You" (http://youtube.com/watch?v=mX6dHWyqwNo) wins in the mouth-agape department, while watching the movie for the first time.  Joe Cocker's performance in "Come Together" (http://youtube.com/watch?v=1v-T15IDYNE) was another standout.  I could keep going.  "Let It Be" as a gospel song during 2 funerals, "Strawberry Fields" as bloody, bombed Vietnam jungles.  The whole thing really needs to be seen, heard, and appreciated, more than once.

The first time I saw AtU I was really bombed, but I loved the movie. I went home and watched it again (sober) and I've been obsessed with this movie ever since.

-Nirvana's version of "Man who Sold the World" is one of the only cover songs that I think is miles better than the original (Bowie).
-'Hurt' by Johny Cash
-'All Along the Watchtower' - Hendrix version
-The Doors version of "House of the Rising Sun" is pretty badass compaired to the original by the Animals.

Edit:  [ur=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96n8T1NYIzUl]I'm fairly sure some chick originally sang this, but they did it better.  Unless my mind made the whole thing up[/url]
