If I actually cared that much about HDDVD vs Blu Ray, I'd be annoyed that HD-DVD is continuing its struggle.
Imagine if this was like the US presidential election where the losing party decides not to go on with further voting, and calls up the winner to concede.
Toshiba: Hello Sony.

Toshiba: We've looked at the current results, and have decided not to continue. We are conceding. Congratulations.

Though I have to say, I'd rather see Blu Ray die if I had to choose between the two.

Regardless of what happens to HD-DVD and blu-ray, I'm still keeping my HD-DVD player and will still expand its library until the actual death of the format.
It's also the primary reason I am considering buying a PS3 at the moment--for the blu-ray player, but it will probably be another month or two before I actually buy it. I _hope_ that maybe Microsoft will release another peripheral for blu-ray support, but it looks unlikely at present.
It's a shame that HD-DVD will probably lose the format war though, I personally think its the superior format for the consumer.

Why do you think so? From what I've read Blu-Ray has more capacity?

HD-DVD is region free and has mandatory lossless audio.

HD DVD is an evolution of the current technology, making it possible for instance to have HD DVD and normal DVD sides to the same disc. HD DVD was fully defined from the start. Blu-ray is going to leave some very angry early adopters with hardware that can't play the later discs. HD DVD is cheaper as well. Once the war is over, the real costs are going to make it into the picture.

Reading iPPi's link makes me thing that it is HD-DVD that is the better format. Definitely better in terms of audio, I guess really all you lose is a little picture quality because of the smaller size. Though seriously, 30 GB for HD using H.264 should be plenty good enough.
It sounds like Blu-Ray wanted to make the disc experience better with all that Java stuff. While DVD menus were pretty rudimentary, they sufficed and I didn't really spend much time out of the movies. Maybe Sony is thinking Blu-Ray games? Because DVD games tend to suck due to the technology available.
Edit: Haha. I just did a little poking around and both formats' DRM is cracked already. Why do they even bother?

they are releasing new firmware, but given that this firmware utilises functions that weren't in the original spec, it's incompatible with some older players. nothing short of a hardware upgrade would fix these issues (as i understand it, blu-ray 1.1 allows picture-in-picture support, which requires a second a/v decoder).

If I had to pick a side I'd go with HD-DVD. Other than that I agree with Cobra in hoping both formats just fizzle.
