Ok, so it looks just like Quake 3. It still gets me all hot and bothered. I love that game. And now it'll be free. No excuses of "Oh, I don't have that game. Lets play this piece of crap I do own." No way, Its going to be Quake and you're getting a rocket to the face.
Plus it'll have all that stuff people seem to like, such as stat tracking, friends lists, matchmaking, and sponsored tournaments. Whatever. I just want to get my frag on.

It's a great idea, and I'm sure there's a huge market for it, but I personally probably won't touch it. That type of MP doesn't really appeal to me.

Quake is the fucking shit. Quake 2 and 3 ruled my life more than any other games and introduced online gaming to me. Simple stuff, but no other shooters get your heart pumping or give you a bigger adrenaline rush than a twitch shooter -- and Quake does it best in my book.

I dunno'.. I'd sort of rather just play Quake 3. But if all that extra stuff turns out cool, and if it runs and plays well, has lots of maps, etc... sure, what the hell! I'm sure I'll at least try it and hopefully get some matches with idol and whoever else here plays. I still love me some Quake.

Yeah I guess I can't talk. Until I got CoD4, I was actively playing both Deux Ex and X-COM: UFO Defense.

well, as poomc touched on, quake is great twitch gaming. the formula is pretty much perfect in q3, and while graphics have certainly moved on, i don't think there's anything that does quake style gameplay any better today.

Well, I hate all your games, so I guess it's only fair. Actually, that isn't true. I like newer team-based games well enough too, but they're too involved for me time-wise and I hate playing with idiots... so they just never quite take.

Speaking of free Quake, I just realized that Urban Terror (http://www.urbanterror.net/news.php), an old Quake 3 mod in the same vein as Counter-Strike, is a free standalone game now. No need for Q3 or a cd key. I just grabbed it yesterday and was instantly reminded of how much fun it is.
I'd say it plays even faster than CS, so it's very Quake-like in an action sense. I really, really like the damage model in the game. Your health is a bar in the corner around your dude's silhouette. When you get shot in a certain body part, you could potentially lose mobility or bleed to death unless you bandage it up. It seems like a lot to think about, but it's incredibly intuitive/easy and it makes some firefights really intense -- it's an easy game to pick up and play. This will be holding me over until Quake Live. Recommended if you're a fan of either Quake or CS.

Many publishers have offered Id Software offers to have a Quake MMO done -- and good money would've been tossed their way for it to be done, too.

During an interview with Shacknews, id Software president John Carmack revealed that the company has previously turned down publisher proposals to develop a massive multiplayer version of its shooter series Quake.
Saying that id had passed on several offers of "good money" to develop a Quake MMO, Carmack added that the company would not be attempting a similar project anytime soon.
"id has no interest in MMO development," said Carmack, who added that while he is familiar with the technology, he is also "fully cognizant" of the challenges and risks of creating a game in the genre.
id Software is currently dabbling in web-based online gaming with its upcoming Quake III Arena port Quake Live. In an interview with Shacknews last month, Carmack said development of the game required a "significant effort" for id due to the company's relative inexperience with internet databases.
"We did not have the experience in website development, database management, and all of that web world type stuff," said Carmack on developing Quake Live. "And honestly, we underestimated the challenge involved in that."

Gamer's Hell refers to its Massively Multiplayer section as "MMOG Clients" which makes sense to me. Though I think they should just be called MMG (Massively Multiplayer Games).

Well, the "G" would be a little redundant. Massively Multiplayer already signifies a game. Otherwise you might have Massively Multiuser...which could be for...uh...what else would need to be massively multiuser other than games?

I like idol's idea of it. Online games are either multiplayer or massively multiplayer.

Concept is really the same either way in a technical sense. If you create a server yourself, it's still a server. Even if you connect to and play on a server on the same computer that is running it, it's still a client connecting to a server. And everyone else that plays on your server would be connecting to a server external to their PC whether they are out in the cloud or in the same subnet. Besides, almost all worthwhile game servers are hosted by hosting companies that actually have decent hardware and data pipes to handle online games.
The only real difference is that a company with a MMOG generally runs all the servers, while other online games have servers that can be run by pretty much anyone.
In essence, I agree that the "O" in "MMO" is redundant.

I'll stick with my regular Q3 install, where Freeze Tag and all the custom maps I want are free, but for $3.99 a month thats really cheap for being able to create your own server. Most server rental places will charge that per-slot per-month.

You know I'm always down for Q3. I wish QL didnt have certain hard-coded server variables that make it impossible for me to play. I liked it other than that.
