Title: Google + YouTube!
Post by: Cools on Monday, October 09, 2006, 03:38:53 PM
It's official (http://www.google.com/intl/en/press/pressrel/google_youtube.html)

Personally, I'm not sure about this one. For one, it's a 1.65 BILLION purchase on a product (YouTube that is) that is hardly making any money and just burning through bandwidth. So I guess we'll see a lot of Google adsense-ish like ads on YouTube in the near future.

I wonder what they'll do to Google Video. I kind of liked the simplicity of it and the last thing I would want is to be "forced" to move to YouTube without the later changing their copyright license and increasing video time limits beyond 10 minutes.

Discuss!

Weird.  I can't say I really care, to be honest.  It doesn't affect me much one way or the other.

Yea I gotta say it's a very strange move by Google.

Especially since YouTube doesn't make money, and it's in potential trouble with copyright material and stuff.

I don't see why Google would take YouTube if they already had Google Video. I was expecting Yahoo to scoop YouTube just to compete with Google.

I get the impression Google is gonna keep buying out stuff until it collapses on itself. Eventually it's gonna buy something that will end up costing it more than it's worth.

Put it this way, they can role google video into YouTube (or vice versa) and it stops Yahoo from getting it. Google probably sees it as a ready made solution for what they wanted to build, so buy it before anyone else does!

Good point. Ah well, it's not a loss or anything.

If it's a defensive move, it's a damn expensive one. I think YouTube would've dissappeared if it weren't for Google now.

And now that Google owns YouTube, anyone that ends up suing YouTube over copyrighted content will hammer the hell out of Google.

I liked how Google Video automatically sort of maximized its video size.  YouTube is fixed from what I can tell.  Of course I thought Google Video's quality was shit.  Really blocky.

Ballsy move, no doubt.  It could pay out, but I have my doubts.

Well, now they'll have to compete with Meta Café.

I am surprised that they did this not long after launching Google Video.

I'm suprised they did this at all.  Youtube in my mind is a money hole.  Fuck, even if it's not, I fail to see how it produces revenue right now (I imagine in the future google will roll out adsense video ads before a video plays).  Sure, there are millions of people viewing your pages, but can any advertising dollars coming in from that really negate the bandwidth costs?  Besides, I really hope this whole 'vloging' thing is a fad that's going to die soon.

All in all I think it's just a really expensive test bed for google to develop and refine video ads.  They're entire revenue model is based off advertising and I have a feeling they want to get into print and mainstream medai advertising now that they have internet ads on the lock down.

Well I thought about it, and I guess it makes sense because in a sense they are eliminating competition. Anyway I am sure they will modify the formula to make it profitable in some way. I imagine they just want the word google to become synonymous with all that is the internet.

Wait.....did I mention that youtube is by and for idiots.  It's played off like the 'people's revolution of television', but it's almost all garbage.  And then you think about it and the people are saying they love youtube so much because television has become crap in the last couple of years.  Are you fucking kidding me?  Television is probably at the highest point it's been at in the last 6 or so years.  Shitty reality shows are on the decline and so are cheesy sitcoms.  They're being replaced by more straight up comedy and dramatic serials.  No, television isn't great, but it's certainly not the shitty cesspool it was in the late 90's, early 00's.  I almost didn't watch tv apart from hockey at all for like 4 years before Lost came on because every night all there was was like 23 crap ass reality shows and 19 sitcoms that were all destined to be cancelled in a week or two.

And then it hit me...that's why youtube is crap.  These are the jackasses that liked that shit.  These are the idiots that buy crap videogames and force directors to dumb down movies.  Well, hopefully they'll just stick with youtube and finally TV, movies, and games can stop catering to them.  Rez 2 please.
