Even on the easiest difficulty (I think it's called Detective), where the game itself adjusts the game's difficulty to the player's skill as they play along and when they die? :o
Only time I had trouble w/ the Mona missions was on Hardboiled and above.
-
It wasnt so much difficulty as outright disgust for such missions that I simply stopped playing the game.
-
It wasnt so much difficulty as outright disgust for such missions that I simply stopped playing the game.
Ahhhhh. I got cha.
I mean, often those missions only are worthwhile as long as the teammate AI doesn't suck.
Or as long as your partner NPC can't actually die.
Or they can take loads of hits.
-
I don't mind defending missions so long as the the thing/person I'm defending doesn't do anything particularly stupid.
I really have no problem with partner AI, granted the AI is decent. It never bothered me in Gears of War. It was a minor inconvenience in some situations in R6 Vegas 2. I'm looking forward to the new Prince of Persia and I'm curious about Elika's game mechanics.
I hope Max Payne 3 is good. Do we know anything about the story?
-

Agreed.

That's b/c GoW and R6: Vegas series did the "you can revive your dude with a touch" thing. So, even when the AI did dumb stuff, you could still get to them and easily revive them.
I'm looking forward to the new Prince of Persia and I'm curious about Elika's game mechanics.
Same.
I hope Max Payne 3 is good. Do we know anything about the story?
So far, nada.
-
I don't like them. I can play through them if they're not just ridiculous, but I'd rather not have to deal with them at all.

Max Payne 3 has been finally announced by Take 2.
Rockstar Vancouver will be developing it.
Planned for Winter 09 on PC, X360, and PS3. (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6206521.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=topstory&tag=topstory;more)
Max Payne 3 hurting PC, PS3, 360 this winter
* By Mark Walton, Tom Magrino, GameSpot UK
* Posted Mar 23, 2009 7:09 am PT
Rockstar's Vancouver studio takes over from Remedy for third outing of ex-NYPD vigilante.
For fans of Max Payne, it has been a long wait since 2003 when the last game in the franchise was released to critical acclaim. Talk of a sequel came in 2004, when Take-Two hinted that a follow-up would eventually arrive. Fast-forward to 2008, and Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick once again mentioned the franchise, teasing that another installment may be in the works but again providing no firm details.
Today, Take-Two and its Rockstar Games subsidiary have announced that Max Payne 3 is indeed in development and is penned for a winter 2009 release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The game is being developed by Rockstar Vancouver, the same outfit behind the controversial sandbox action adventure Bully. Finnish outfit Remedy, which developed the first two Max Payne titles, is currently developing Alan Wake, which will be published by Microsoft.
Rockstar Vancouver will apparently not be straying far from Remedy's original formula, however, as Max Payne 3 again sees the titular retired NYPD veteran battling internal demons as well as those that plague the city's streets.
"We're starting a new chapter of Max's life with this game," commented Rockstar cofounder Sam Houser in a statement. "This is Max as we've never seen him before, a few years older, more world-weary and cynical than ever. We experience the downward spiral of his life after the events of Max Payne 2 and witness his last chance for salvation."
Rockstar did not delve into specific gameplay details, and did not mention the series' genre-defining "bullet time" slow-motion technique. The publisher merely noted that "the latest installment delivers more of the classic elements and hyperintense action that fans have come to love."
When Max Payne 3 rolls around this winter, it may find itself on shakier legs than when it left off six years ago. In October, the franchise saw its first transition to the silver screen. And while the Mark Wahlberg-led action flick pulled in healthy opening-week revenues, critics were all too eager to redub the film "Maximum Payneful" (an actual quote).

I'm happy to hear this news finally. I was waiting for an announcement for a while. Both games were a blast.
-
I never beat Max Payne 1, but bought Max Payne 2, and never beat it either. Both awesome games, but I never beat them. I should do that.
I'm still using the mousepad that came with the first game. Not that I want a ton of random game mousepads, but it would be cool if more games did it (even if part of a collector's edition). It's the one pack-in I've gotten the most use out of by far, and it was completely free with a great game I was gonna buy anyway.
-
i think i beat the original Max Payne like 4 times. i loved that game. I wasnt AS thrilled with the second but it was still pretty fun.
-
I hope they bring back the actor who's face they mapped on the model in Max Payne 1. It was so painfully bad that I missed it in MP2.
-
That's actually one of the devs. All the characters in the original MP were members of the dev team, it was pretty funny!
-
(Developer) Sam Lake was Max Payne in the original one. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Lake)
I don't know who's gonna be Max Payne in MP3, but he looks like he got the whole Sam Fisher old, rough, and gruff thing going on, from this artwork....
-
Wow, a game with a grizzled, angry protagonist in it. Totally haven't seen that before.
-
Yeah, that's pretty weak. Shoulda stuck with original Max.
-
Fuck it, Max should be a cyborg in the new one.
-
And a ninja. With a light saber.
-
You know, it's not the guy's face (ok, it kinda is), but the expressions. I really can't believe they used such extreme and painful looking expressions in the final game. It was awesome though.
I can see the Max in MP3 being all wide-eyed and crazy looking with the beard. Like Grizzly Adams on crack and pissed off.
EDIT: sort of like this:

-
Haha that would be awesome ;D
I don't mind the grizzled old angry stereotype on Max, as a character he is a stereotype anyway. So long as they make a great story accompanied by great action, just like the last two, I'm sold.

I couldn't have said this any better myself.
I just can only hope Rockstar Vancouver can somehow find a way to give Max Payne 3 the treatment that Remedy gave their very own Max Payne masterpieces.
-
Speaking of which, I wonder why Remedy aren't the ones developing MP3. Maybe they didn't want to do it.

Remedy doesn't own the IP anymore.
Take 2 does.
I don't know if Remedy lost the IP due to poor sales, sold the IP, or what the whole story was on that....no clue.
Also, Remedy is working on Alan Wake. (http://www.overwritten.net/forum/index.php?topic=410.0)

Here's some info on Max 3.
Rumored to be from latest Game Informer - July 2009 issue. (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/59092)
Print magazine Game Informer has revealed a new piece of artwork from Max Payne 3, noting the sequel is featured in its July 2009 issue.
While little is known of the forthcoming action game, which is being developed by Rockstar Vancouver instead of creator Remedy and occurs roughly 10 years after Max Payne 2, Deeko passes along some rumored details allegedly pulled out of Game Informer.
These bullet points aren't verified or confirmed, so take that as you will:
* In addition to being bald and bearded, Max is addicted to pain killers.
* That pain killer addiction will affect gameplay.
* The game is set in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with battles in "urban ghetto" locales.
* "Fully destructible environments" and a cover system are in.
* There will also be some "day and night cycles."
* Bullet Time is now "more visceral and ultra-violent."
* Online multiplayer is in, but no details.
* Powered by Rockstar's RAGE technology (GTA4, Red Red Redemption).
Clarification on the above rumors, which do seem to fit with what we already know, should arrive shortly as more subscribers receive the magazine.
Max Payne 3 is slated to hit PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in winter 2009.
-
More info from The Shack, which they got from Game Informer. (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/59092)
New Details
* The cover system is "not the focus of the game," writes Game Informer, with Rockstar's Rob Nelson noting that "the way that you experience this world isn't just take cover, shoot, and move to the next piece of cover."
* "We took all the elements of traditional Max and expanded it out so the game becomes gun ballet, or gun-fu, or whatever you want to call it," added Nelson.
* Max Payne 3 is set 12 years after the events of Max Payne 2.
* Max is a broken man, and now works in private security for a wealthy family. He moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil to escape the demons of New York.
* Many objects in the game are destructible, such as crates.
* Max can now use human shields.
* Rockstar used scanning equipment to help capture the real-life feel of the Sao Paulo ghettos, which apparently caused some issues getting through customs.

After Alan Wake, Remedy has NO plans to return to Max Payne - especially since they sold the IP straight-up to Rockstar. (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3178030)
Remedy Has 'No Plans' to Revisit Max Payne
Studio has evidently moved on after selling the IP to Rockstar.
By Kat Bailey, 02/19/2010
Max Payne 3 is (presumably) due later this year, but Remedy isn't working on it. They're busy putting the finishing touches on Alan Wake. But when they're done, will they be returning to the series they helped create? It's looking iffy.
Remedy's Oskari Hakkinen told Videogaming247 that the studio has 'no plans' to revisit the franchise, "Max was a long process for us obviously as well. We sold the IP to Rockstar who are now doing their interpretation of Max Payne. I haven't seen it. I mean, I've seen the screenshots, and you know what? Rockstar doesn't make bad games."
"Rockstar make awesome games, and, rightly so, they're going to make their own interpretation of Max Payne and it's not going to be a Remedy game. But it'll be awesome, because it's going to be Rockstar."
"It'll be interesting to play it and see their interpretation. [Remedy head writer] Sam Lake is the brainchild behind the Remedy version, so Rockstar should make their own interpretation of that."
Rockstar Vancouver is the studio currently tasked with reviving the PC classic. The original was famous for its bullet time mechanics, which were reminiscent of The Matrix.
No word on when Max Payne 3 will be arriving, but it is currently slated for sometime this year.

Maximum Revival!!
Some details have been revealed about Max Payne 3 (http://news.softpedia.com/news/New-Max-Payne-3-Details-Appear-192922.shtml).
At the beginning of the story, Payne will have a full set of hair, as seen in one of the two screenshots below, but going through his adventures, he'll lose that, managing to look like the character we saw in the first images that accompanied its older reveal.
The game will be more linear than other Rockstar titles, with the development team putting an emphasis on set piece moments that will amaze gamers, and less on an open world where Max can run around and wreak havoc, like in Grand Theft Auto IV or Red Dead Redemption.
n terms of gameplay, Max Payne 3 will see the hero retain his signature dive in real time, and he will react in a more realistic way depending on his environments, while enemies will also be taken care of, in order to add that extra bit of realism to the shooter mechanics of the future title.
Kinda interesting but nothing spectacular.
EDIT:
Also, two screenshots in the link.

Max Payne 3 -> Trailer. (http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/09/14/max-payne-3-trailer-goes-bald-monologues/#comments)
This just doesn't look like a Max Payne game at all - too colorful and not in a city like NY.
Where's the noir?
It sounds like Max, though.
Action looks like Max - but that's it.
Still, it probably somehow will turn out good - this is a Rockstar-made game. [shrug]
I doubt it'll be as great as the previous too Remedy-made Max games.

What the fuck? Thats insane.
They're gonna have to start shipping retail box PC games on BR-discs or something, if this kind of madness is gonna keep up...
Means I'd have to look into buying a BR-burner drive and some blank BR-discs for back-up, too...
-
Either that or multi-disc games are making a comeback.

Either that or multi-disc games are making a comeback.
Oh, I so hope not!
It's bad enough RAGE PC in a Retail Box is on 3 DVD's and takes up around 24 GB HDD space.
Downloading and backing-up some of these HUGE games is gonna be a pain in the ass!
Hell, DAO Ultimate takes up about 28 GB HDD.
-
Hahaaha. WHAT THE FUCK??

-
I think because people have such ginormous hard drives developers either don't care as much, or are actually taking advantage to create bigger content? Maybe a mixture of the two.
35 is too much.
I uninstalled the new Total War game after just not playing it and got a huge chunk of space. I bet D can tell us what the install size for it is.

I bought Shogun 2 like dirt cheap, back when Amazon DVG had it for like $2 or so.
I been meaning to download Total War: Shogun 2, when doing something else [like watching a movie or something].
Let me look at Steam's estimated download size....
...
Total War: Shogun 2 is almost 23 GB [with no DLC].
-
What the fuck is taking up all the space?
-
Yea after some free DLC it was nearly 30GB. I couldn't believe it!

PCWorld -> Interview w/ Rockstar on PC version of Max Payne 3. (http://www.pcworld.com/article/256186/max_payne_3_pc_developer_interview.html#tk.hp_new)
In BOLD = Alex Rubens PCWorld
In Regular Print = Rockstar's Kevin Hoare, PC Lead Designer on Max Payne 3.
What are you doing to take advantage of the powerful hardware available in a PC?
As you can see from the specs list above, we’ve worked hard to make sure the game will run smoothly on a wide range of PC builds. But it’s when you get towards the top end of that range that you can really push a game to its limits, and the game will look and run incredibly on the most advanced current machines around at the moment and well into the near future.
You’ll find that screen resolution is scalable, there’s triple and even sextuple monitor support which helps to run higher screen resolutions, there’s various anti-aliasing options, scalable water quality, scalable shadow quality, increased detail for characters and vehicles and a scalable texture filter that further increases visual quality. We’re also supporting DX11 with Max Payne 3, with features including Hull/Tessellation/Domain Shaders (which adds curvature to the character/vehicle models), Gather4 (for optimized shadow sampling / FXAA), Geometry shader / Stream Output and DX11 texture samplers to name a few.
35GB is a pretty hefty install size, even for a PC title. Why the large size? Are we seeing HD textures or better rendered cutscenes?
Both, and more. As we said earlier, one of the goals with Max Payne 3 on PC was to have a game that runs beautifully out of the box on day one across a wide range of machines. The PC is the only platform where you can really max out the high end if you want to, and we wanted Max Payne 3 on PC to have the potential to look beautiful on the highest possible resolutions on the biggest monitors available - so while we can still scale performance down to suit even reasonably low-end rigs, every asset is available at the highest resolution possible, from audio to video to textures.
The installed size of Max Payne 3 is due to the no-compromise quality of its assets, which already push console disc space to the limits. A good portion of the extra space requirements on PC can be attributed to the increased size of the textures, which are four times the size of those on consoles. In addition, the audio quality is significantly higher than the consoles due to lower compression rates, which improves audio fidelity. Again, this comes back to the range of possibilities that the PC platform opens up for us. That, combined with higher video settings when running the game, results in substantially better visual quality.
As you can tell, there’s a lot for PC fans with higher-spec hardware to sink their teeth in to.
Assuming that there's full gamepad support, do you find that the gamepad works as well as the mouse and keyboard in Max Payne 3?
Correct, there is full gamepad support with Max Payne 3. We also wanted the kind of customizable options you get within a PC game to transfer over to the gamepad so players will be able to completely fine-tune the aiming mechanics to tailor them to their playing style and preference, something that PC gamers have come to expect with mouse and keyboard controls. You can change the reticule, alter the horizontal and vertical reticule speeds, remove or amend kill indicators, not to mention selecting your preferred aiming mechanic. It’s also worth mentioning that console players will also have these options; everything within this game across all platforms is about customization and player preference.
Thanks for reading, and keep an eye peeled for the PC version of Max Payne 3, which debuts on June 1st. Stay tuned for our full review!

Rockstar plans to put MP cheaters in a "Cheaters Pool" so they can only play against others who made that list. (http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/35441/taking-aim-at-cheaters-in-max-payne-3.html)
LMAO!
Awesome! :D

Anyone else remember this coming out? I nabbed it during the Steam sale and plowed through it today and last night. It's fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Rockstar's take was a solid one that stands well alongside the originals. I feel like a lot of thought went into the tweaks they made to the formula that serve the tone of the very well while managing to keep the game playing well in a new way (for the series). I would say the same as well for writing. It's not as flowery as the originals, but the shift in tone is well earned.
So yeah, great game. Don't forget it's there if another sale happens or something.
Edit: Oh yeah. About the 35gig install. It's sort of bullshit. I think they just made the game for a blu ray and didn't bother compressing anything. The texture work doesn't seem any crazier than your average game these days.

I picked this up on the Xbox Games on Demand sale a few weeks ago. I haven't started it yet because as usual, I never managed to finish either of the first 2 games (despite owning physical and Steam versions of both). I started playing Max Payne 1, but shit... it's been so long. I feel like I have to abuse the quick save system to get anywhere lol.

It dropped when Diablo 3 (PC) did - so, I'd say most people answer "No" to this. ;)

Max Payne 3 was great, IMHO. Man, that series has been awesome, from Remedy to Rockstar.
I don't know, man - I had most of the stuff maxed-out on my PC; and I thought the game's graphics, with its details & backgrounds were fabulous.
{shoulder shrug}
And, TSW has it beat at almost 39GB in size.
