It has started... anyone get an invite? I doubt if you are not 60 that you'll get one, but if you are, you might've gotten one.

Does it randomly pick WoW accounts, or did you have to sign up?

As far as I know they picked people who had older accounts and stuff. Guild progression could also be a factor in that as well.
Still, I'd expect an open beta in the near future, since the game is slated for late November release.

Previous contest winners got invites, like if you won the test realm leveling contest thing.
Blizzard also contacted some farther progressed guilds to give them betas, but those haven't gone out yet. My guild was picked as one of those, and allowed to list 25 people to get beta accounts. We assumed it's 25 people so we can test 25 man raid content at 70. I didnt' get picked as one of the 25 though, since I'm a newer member. :(
