Title: The Recent Gaming Purchases Thread
Post by: MysterD on Monday, September 11, 2006, 06:42:19 PM
So, what have y'all purchased lately for games???

My latest purchase was today. I got Dungeon Siege 2: Broken World expansion for $17.99 using CC's flyer, price-matching it at BB.

As mentioned in the "Currently Playing" thread, I recently got God of War and Shadow of the Colossus.  I have yet to play either due to the state of my PS2.

Yuh, I saw you said your PS2 is broke; sucky. :( Bleh!

I usually have a separate thread for "Currently Playing" and "Recent Purchases" normally b/c I often buy games (on sale or cheap, normally...) and just put them aside....
...while I'm already in the midst of working on playing a game...or two...or three...or so....

Isn't this kind of redundant with the currently playing thread?

Isn't this kind of redundant with the currently playing thread?

I dunno' 'bout the rest of y'all, but I am often in the process of playing a game...or two...or three....
...And then I'll just go out and buy something else b/c it's on sale and just put it aside 'til I'm done w/ what I'm in the midst of working on.

I dunno', but if y'all think it's redundant, we could actually merge the topics -- of course, y'all would have to specify what you just bought and/or what you are currently playing.

The last game I bought was Xenosaga Episode III which I beat last week.  I'm thinking about getting Guitar Hero or Disgaea 2 sometime soon.

I'm definitely looking forward to that one.

Played it, loved it, and for $12 totally worth it. The game works fine with the keyboard, but I think it's best with a joypad (the button and command layouts match the Xbox and PS2 joypad layouts).

After playing 'Broken Sword - The Angel of Death' I can say they've changed the controls drastically. They made it point and click, but they maintained some activities that are typical of directional controls, i.e. if you wanna go up a ladder you don't click on it, you have to guide the character to the ladder the with mouse cursor, and you have to keep holding the mouse cursor in the direction you wanna go (up). I tried playing with the keyboard, but you can't go up a ladder with it for some reason, and there's no 'action' key, so you always have to revert to the mouse making the keyboard completely useless. Another minor inconvenience is when I hit ESC to pause, it brings up the menu, but if I hit ESC again to go back to the game it tries to quit to the main menu; I have to actually click on RESUME in order to go back to the game.

So it's pretty annoying, and I kinda miss the BS3 controls. Now I've got second thoughts about BS4. Controls are one of the most important factors in a game for me. More than graphics! Controls are a big variable in deciding whther or not I'll get a game.

Have it on my old PC, since my new one wouldn't run it, oddly enough....

What I played of it, which wasn't much, I liked it. Basically, I tested it to see if it worked -- I was basically trying tio get off the plane.

Yuh, the very opening, pretty much -- hehe.

I want to try GH so much, but I just can't justify the money or the fact that if I was to put in that much time, I should just be learning the songs on the actual guitar that I play and record music with.  It's an absolutely maddening conundrum.

That's what I paid for it at CompUSA -- $5. A good bargain, to say the least. That game is AWESOME.

And, they are planning to REMOVE the damn StarForce Copyright protection, w/ an upcoming patch that will also be adding new features and all. :)

Idol, have you installed the X3 yet??? If you have trouble w/ the CD's reading the damn music files, go here on how to bypass them, since you'll have to skip them on the install and then DL and install them manually:

If you liked Freelancer, this one is fun stuff. The graphics and action are awesome.
It's very open-ended and freedom-filled, too.

Though, it does come StarForce equipped. But, at least they plan to remove the SF protection, w/ a patch in the future; Q4, to be exact. :)

I have also been very lucky w/ Starforce.

Just warning you it's SF-equipped....and since most SF-based games, it has been reported, won't even run on the current Beta of Win Vista, so who knows if it'll even run on the first retail edition of Vista.....
Title: Re: The Recent Gaming Purchases Thread

I don't think it's so much luck.  Starforce doesn't affect the large majority of its users, it's just a lousy form of copy protection that's way overkill and *has* affected some people.  It never affected me in any way, but ideologically I can't stand it.  It's just one of those things that even without having given me problems, it's just like... I don't know.  Like using a machinegun to shoot down a bug.  It's just more than is necessary and causes residual issues because of that.
Title: Re: The Recent Gaming Purchases Thread
Post by: Xessive on Monday, October 02, 2006, 12:25:35 AM
Normally SF doesn't cause any serious issues, but I noticed a couple of problems that arise on my system when I have SF installed.

They're mostly just absolutely irritating inconveniences:
My DVD drive will only work once with each system boot; if I use a disc, I'll have to restart before the drive wiill recognize any other disc after that. It's f&$^ing annoying. The second thing is sometimes it just becomes a CD drive, and doesn't recognize DVD's at all, until I reboot. Uninstall SF, and the drive works normally.

Conclusion:
Starforce can pre-suck my genital situation.

I'm not too concerned with Vista issue, because 1) I don't plan on using Vista, and 2) since it is a pretty big issue for Vista it only means that SF will be obliterated. That's about the only issues I've had with SF, other than that I agree with Que, I have ideological issues with its methods.

Nice Carlin reference there.

I'd prefer games to not have SF, and I like that devs are patching it out of games that have it. I personally have seen no problems with it so I wont let it stop me from playing a particular game, thats all.

Best Buy got their value software section going, where games are buy 2, get 1 free.
Some games are red dotted, and are $1.99.

How they rang up:
1. PoP: Sands was $9.99.
2. Sacred was labeled as $9.99 (and did not have a red dot sticker on it), but it actually rang up at the red dot price of $1.99!
3. Splinter Cell was $9.99, but that was the third one -- so, it rang up the free one!

Best of all, SC was already patched up in this 3-disc set by Ubi to version 1.2b. :)

I wonder what Uru is like.. I never got into Myst.. I didn't like it at all. Then someone got me Riven as a birthday present and I tried it once, hated it, and quit. I don't why, but the game irritated me. Maybe it as was the frame-by-frame movement, the tedious puzzles, or the overall weirdness.

I haven't played Uru, Real Myst, or Myst V: End of Ages, so I can't judge them.. Though by looking at the screenshots Uru seems like the most appealing. Some of the environments remind me of some areas in Morrowind, so I might check it out.

Yuh, I had a $10 off coupon from UbiSoft.com b/c my b-day's in October. So, I ordered SC: Pandora and Uru.

Both are $9.99 each on there, so w/ $10 off, I basically got them w/out paying for shipping, if you want to look at it that way -- since shipping wound up being like $8.49 or so. Wound up like $19 or so, total.

Which is fine, since most stores sell SC: Pandora for $20 and Uru: Complete is just almost impossible to find around here.

I ordered the other day w/ my $15 birthday coupon from EA's online store NFS: Most Wanted for like $11, after shipping and all. Beats spending $20 for it retail at the store and then tax.

I just fiinished the Uru demo, and it was pretty good! It takes a little while to get the hang of the controls (as simple as they are). I kept trying to understand if it was a 3rd person point & click or a 1st person game.. Turns out it's a mix. I like how you can create your own character too :)

Gametap is going to bring the online multiplayer Uru back up. They are even toying with releasing tools to players to create their own ages. Which on one hand could be cool, on the other we'll see a lot of crappy looking ages.

Great....Uru: Complete won't run. :(
I get the evil "Cannot Locate CD-ROM" message box. :(

Checked the forums -- looks like it's either b/c Nero 6 and/or my Burner Drive causing issues....

EDIT:
Now Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow does the same thing, but only on the MP Portion of the game for the "Cannot located CD-ROM" issue.

Though, the SP portion will run -- and it runs just fine and all. Weird...

Any ideas, guys???
Title: Re: The Recent Gaming Purchases Thread
Post by: Xessive on Friday, October 06, 2006, 12:16:56 PM
Hmm weird.. In SC Chaos Theory the MP part doesn't require a CD (it's excatly the same MPa s PT but with some minor improvements).. In fact you can copy the 400 MB of the VERSUS folder to any PC that can run it and it'll still work.. Try running the direct exe for SC's multiplayer instead of the launcher menu.

As for Uru, I'd say try looking for a crack, that usually solves any CD-ROM errors for me.

I know it's not a fix, but it's a work-around and it'll get you into the game :P

I know it's not a fix, but it's a work-around and it'll get you into the game :P
Found how to fix it and where to get the files from that you will need to extract:
http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/524109302/m/5401012463

Took me a lot of searching, but there is a fix for this issue, which UbiSoft released -- basically, you have to replace 4 files w/ those Ubi provides in this "Bug Fixing" zip file for you. :)

Yay!! It's running! :)

So, here's what you actuall have to do:

Quote
Ubisoft has released a patch that should fix the "Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application" error.

The patch is UruCC_n.zip, 3.29 MB, available here (http://help.support.ubi.com/UruCC_n.zip).

To apply this patch:
-- a. Save UruCC_n.zip to your hard drive.
-- b. Extract the 4 files it contains - SoundDecompress.exe, sp.dll, UruExplorer.exe, and UruSetup.exe - to where you saved UruCC_n.zip.
-- c. Go to \Program Files\Ubi Soft\Cyan Worlds\Uru - Ages Beyond Myst and for backup purposes rename these same 4 files. For example, rename SoundDecompress.exe to SoundDecompress_OLD.exe.
-- d. Copy the 4 patch files to \Program Files\Ubi Soft\Cyan Worlds\Uru - Ages Beyond Myst.
-- e. Play Uru.

Yesterday, I installed Sacred (jewel case edition). I figured it was the original version of Sacred, okay.....I figured I'd have to do a lot of DL'ing, to update it to "Sacred Plus" (130 MB patch file) and then add the  patch to the newest version of that.

Yet, after installing the game on the disc, I looked at the PDF addendum to the PDF manual for Sacred, which spoke of Sacred Plus -- which I knew was out, but figured I'd have to take the time to download the 130 MB file to install the extra content. Well, then I looked at the name of the CD -- "Sacred Plus." I realized this was going to save me time -- it's got the "Plus" content already on it! Very nice! I didn't expect that, since I do know they sell a "Sacred Plus" edition at stores and a "Sacred: Gold" edition (w/ "Sacred Plus" and "Sacred: Underworld" expansion) -- I'm wondering why this 2-CD jewel case edition wasn't labeled "Sacred Plus".....what was the American publisher (Encore is the US publisher) thinking?!?!?!

And booted the game. From the disc, it's already all patched up to the newset version of Sacred Plus, which is "1.8.26." Didn't expect that either.

All I need now is "Sacred: Underworld." Sweet. :)

Me too.

From what I read on the Sacred site, I don't like that the US Version has been toned down on the violence so Encore (the publisher) could get the T rating, unlike the Euro version.

Yeah, that's a common case with many games.

I remember back home a friend of mine got a UK version of Turok for his N64 and all the blood was green, but my cousin got an Asian version (it was still in English though) and the blood was red.. There was an unlockable (or a cheat) which allowed you to change the blood's colour (red, green, blue, purple), but the UK version had no red blood option.. It was weird.
